  • A Response to MikeyS' Post: Husband Loses Memory, Wife Fights to Win His Love

When MikeyS posted about Scott and Joan Bolzan, I was uninformed about the story. After I read his article, I followed his hyperlink to an article Joan Bolzan had written about her husband, Scott. 3 Years ago (on December 17), Scott fell at work and lost all 46 years of his life's memories. Their story is remarkable. I could barely get through Joan's article in one sitting, I found it so profound.

What is so remarkable is how strong Joan has been. She stayed with him and has done everything in her power to help Scott relearn the world, himself, and his family.

In his post, Mikey asks us what might we do in such a situation? Well, I can't really say. Can we ever really know what we might do in such a specific situation-- one which we've not yet encountered in our lives? I'm not sure.

What I'd like to say is that, in the event that L were to lose all memories, I'd do what Joan did. Of course, we've only been together for 2 and a half years while Joan and Scott have been married for well over 20. I can't imagine that I would be strong enough to suffer the pain I, myself, would endure. It would likely be even more difficult to watch L struggle. Teaching L everything that I know about the world, us, our families, and our friends would certainly redefine the meaning of patience.

I'd like to think that I would do everything I am emotionally and physically capable of doing in order to help. All I can really say is that I admire Joan Bolzan. I admire Scott, too, and his children, family, friends, and co-workers.

I hope something like this doesn't happen to me or my loved ones, but if it ever does, I hope I remember how I feel about it now. I hope I'm capable of all that Mrs. Bolzan is capable of.

Did you read Mikey's post? How did you respond? What would you do if you were Joan? Do you respect her for what she has done?
