  • I Love True Blood, Therefore I Love Gay Men?

I'm ashamed to admit that I've been bitten by the love bug. And by love bug I mean vampires. True Blood has quickly become my new obsession, and as much as I would like to say that Edward doesn't do things to my heart, I can't deny that I've had a dream or two about him.

It's not something I'm proud of. There's no explaining why I find vampires so undeniably sexy. Perhaps it's their everlasting stamina and their dark and brooding nature. Who knows?

    Apparently, Esquire magazine does.

According to them, it's not actually vampires I'm lusting after. It's gay men that I want in my bed.

"Edward, the romantic hero of the Twilight series, is a sweet, screwed-up high school kid, and at the beginning of his relationship with Bella, she is attracted to him because he is strange, beautiful, and seemingly repulsed by her. This exact scenario happened several times in my high school between straight girls and gay guys who either hadn't figured out they were gay or were still in the closet.

Twilight's fantasy is that the gorgeous gay guy can be your boyfriend, and for the slightly awkward teenage girls who consume the books and movies, that's the clincher. Vampire fiction for young women is the equivalent of lesbian porn for men: Both create an atmosphere of sexual abandon that is nonthreatening. That's what everybody wants, isn't it? Sex that's dangerous and safe at the same time, risky but comfortable, gooey and violent but also traditional and loving.

In the bedroom, we want to have one foot in the twenty-first century and another in the nineteenth."

So, what you're telling me is:
Women are attracted to people they can't have. Ok, I buy that.

The people we lust after are the ones who are repulsed by us. Alright, I guess I like a challenge from time to time.

We love sex that is dangerous, yet we feel safe. An oxymoron though it may be, I've known people to dig the combo of sexuality and violence. This is nothing new.

And all this translates to women wanting to have sex with gay men? That seems like a stretch.

What are your thoughts on this? Can this vampire-craze really be traced back to a innate desire to sleep with gay men?

Lulz, here come the Twihards screaming "HE'S NOT FROM TRUE BLOOD YOU DUMB BITCH!!!!"

Personally, I like this gay-spin on Eddy.  Someone should write naughty fanfics about it.  I bet they could write it better than whatsherface (burn).

I don't really get this whole vampires craze.  Really?  That's all people can come up with?  /goes back to Stephen King shelf

  • frozencherries@xanga

the twilight/true blood is confusing me. is there an edward in true blood too?

but anyway, i think that's bull, about us wanting what we can't have and wanting GAY men...psh, please.

  • TheRandomWriter@xanga

I think that's a bit ridiculous that they would make those assumptions about us for what we watch on the television, read in books, or watch in movies.  They're just trying to make up reasons to discuss this sudden "vampire craze" that has creeped into our world.

Excuse me, Esquire writers, but the vampire craze has been around for YEARS, back when Angel and Buffy were on TV and movies like Interview with the Vampire and Underworld popped out.

I think that people need to just give it a rest with criticizing the vampire craze and just let those who like it be.  If you don't like it, then don't read or watch it.  Enough said.  Don't criticize what others like.  I don't go judgmental on your asses when you have your own weird crazes...

  • JusticeCho@xanga

It's always been about wanting gay men.  Remember the last decade when Anne Rice was the most popular Vampire writer around.  Interview with a Vampire was full of homo erotic subtleties.  Guess girls just want that guy who's strong, mysterious, dangerous, out of their league and can still rock in bed.  Aaaaaand possibly give them the fantasy of a 3 some with 2 guys instead of 2 girls heh.

  • Cookstergirl88@xanga

Well for a bit of infor on Edward and Bella:

The reason Edward acted so put off by Bella was because she smelled so good to him and he didn't want to eat her. He didn't want to take her humanity away from her. Yet he couldn't pull himself from her and would find himself protecting her. Also Edward could read minds, everyone's. That is everyone's mind but Bella.

Bella knew Edward was different, found out he was vampire on her own. She didn't fit into the human world. Everything about Edward she loved, and strangely trusted him. He proved that he wouldn't hurt her ( saving her from being crushed to death by a car.)  She loved him for who he was and what he did for her.

Well that was just my spin.

I can't say I agree with you but intresting idea at the least.

  • Lovebipolar117@xanga

@Cookstergirl88@xanga - oh my god, thanks for a summary of the twilight books. that was not 'your spin', that's the way the books made it sound.

Sorry, I'm grouchy, if it makes you feel better.

Personally, I think it's an interesting connection. I think, yes. Totally makes sense to link vampires to gay men. However, I don't think that's the appeal for everyone. Just some.

  • untainted_love_for_her@xanga

    I...
I just don't get this. It confuses and frustrates me.

  • P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga

bella wore a strong scented perfume that masked the smell of the aromatic scent of fresh young blood that edward loved. edward was repulsed but moreso than that, he was perplexed as to why humans smelled of eau de toilet spray than iron-clad blood, so he wanted to get closer to bella's neck to find out. bella was amazed at how smooth and lovely edward's vampire skin was and she wonders what type of skin care cosmetics he uses or was he the effeminate guy she saw working at the mac make-up counter or it is just the nutritious blood he drinks from hopelessly vulnerable girls like bella's necks, which give him that fabulous glow to his skin that she is drawn to. whatever the case might be, the vampire charisma is contagious and she wants to know what is like to do it with a vampire I don't think it is wanting to have sex with a gay man but having sex with a metrosexual vampire to make the manly scruffy human men annoyed that their beautiful women are so mesmerized by gay looking yet dreamy vampires, who have those sexy vampire teeth and a creepy rapist stare I haven't seen this twilight movie or true blood show. I just made this up

  • Sighing_Woodpecker@xanga

Hm.  Obviously this person hasn't read the Twilight stories from the writer's Mormon/LDS perspectives...

It's all about being set-apart, and therefore special...I guess that could SOMEHOW translate to gay for some, but I highly doubt Stephenie Meyer wanted Edward to come across as gay ... that'd just be lulz.

  • Sighing_Woodpecker@xanga

@P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - I like your story better.  Can we make THAT into a movie? Because I'd pay $10 to see yours.

    I love True Blood too.

My opinion, (dont crucify me plz) is Eric Northman could use Edward Cullen as a tea cozy. Ive loved vampires since I was a little girl, growing up watching Tales from the Crypt and Night of the living dead, to being OBSESSED with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Anne Rice in high school, to True Blood now.

Yes, I read and saw Twilight and will most likely go see New Moon, but what the franchise has done to the modern idea of vampires just pisses me off. They should still be badasses like Spike and Lestat. Those were REAL vampires who are just fabulous characters themselves without their female counterparts, and Edward doesnt do that for me.

and in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with watching gay vampires and wanting to have sex with them in your own little fantasy world. Louis and Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles make me swoon to this day, and Eric from True Blood is just hot with ANYONE, not to mention Spike and Angel... (dont get me started I can rant for days...)

  • anonymous

And Im sorry but Robert Downy Jr. as Lestat in apparently the new movie based off of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles makes me sick...Ironman as Lestat??? Really?????

  • FireYourBoss@xanga

I don't know much about women and their innate desires, but Let The Right One In is another good vamp flick... if you're into indie films that is.

  • theladyofabundance@xanga

Edward is the bad boy that you know in real life, it would never work out. But in fantasy it works just fine. People cant seem to wrap their brains around the idea that the "bad" boy actually breaks your heart. WHY? Because he's BAD! He doesnt simply dress like a bad boy, his actions are clearly bad.

Girls believe they are the hottest things, the most worthy thing in the world, if they can turn the bad boy. Granted this is an illusion in their head thats tied to poor self esteem. Thats why Bella is such an average girl... any female can imagine being in her shoes. If Bella can turn the bad boy, so can you...

    But thats not reality!

Any boy or girl is going to be screwed in life if they believe in faery tales.

What women need to do however is raise their standards because they simply enjoy having sex with the biggest assholes out there. Then they complain about their broken hearts. Ladies need to wise up.

  • xSerendipity713x@xanga

I have no idea what one would have to do with the other to be honest!

  • GaMeGurLsH@xanga
  • eatdrinkandbemaryy@xanga

lmao. does esquire magazine have nothing better to do than feed us this bullshit?

  • JessxMaxine@xanga

lol esquire magazine is pure shit. :)

  • chicken1672

mmmm maybe  I actually just wrote a blog about being attracted to gay men here. However, I don't think I've gotten into the whole Vampire thing, but it would certainly make me feel better.

  • mi_piaci

ok edward is "replused" by bella because he wants her too much

and since when does vampire=gay. vampires are dangerous, sexy, strong, mysterious--thats what makes them so appealing to women....maybe its just me but thats not exactly how i'd describe gay men as a whole...

  • MsKittyCatty@xanga
    I feel you...

    Definitly a stretch...

  • blackemptyness@xanga

that is an interesting way for them to put it... i cant say i agree.

i am obsessed with True Blood as well.Never really got into Twilight. But True Blood =DYUMMMM!!!!
  • Brittany

@frozencherries@xanga - haha sorry for the confusion

    edward = twilight

true blood = hbo show that has nothing to do with edward.

i was just combining them into one vampire loving force

  • liquid_s@xanga

no i don't think it's related to gay men, unless you like godrick biting eric.

i think it's so obvious. vampires are powerful. look at the picture that was even used in this blog! she's submitting to him. he looks like he has the upper hand. loving vampires is just about wanting to be dominated over, controlled, used, hurt. do you see a woman vampire on a man? if you do & you like it, then you like to be the dominatrix. if you like it the true blood, twighlight, and possibly even the buffy way, then you like being the submissive one in the bedroom. wanting a vampire isn't wanting what you can't have. only in buffy, is that true. cuz she can't have angel. but bella can have edward & she does. sookie can have bill & she does.

and i don't think women want gay men. it's just that most straight men aren't gay enough. like, if you met a guy who was really manly but also kinda gay ie metrosexual, then you wouldn't have this so called lust for "vampires". my man is clean all the time, prims himself, obsesses over clothes & looking good, can talk like a girl & does, but he is so manly in the bedroom. thus, i am completely satisfied. but i can see why women like gayish men. they're more understanding, they don't forget you just cuz sports are on, they can cook & like to make things look nice, they're clean, they totally get your love for america's next top model...

man, with my brain,i should do psych!

  • Toetally_surveysx3@xanga

It's not gay men we want,
    it's Alexander Skarsgard.
    [And Stephen Moyer.
    And Sam Tramell.]
