  • The Notebook in Real Life!

A recent article on Fox 8 in Akron, Ohio reported a touching news story about a couple who took care of each other to the very end.  Sixty-four years ago, James and Lauretta Burke exchanged their wedding vows; now, James is gone, but the love he shared with Lauretta warms the hearts of all who knew them.  Peg Zimmer, James and Lauretta’s daughter, says that the love her parents shared has parallels to the couple in the movie The Notebook.

James and Lauretta met at a party shortly after James returned home from World War II.  They soon married, settled down in Akron, Ohio, and raised nine children.  As the couple grew older, they both began to experience medical problems:  Lauretta developed dementia, while James experienced heart disease.  Although both of them endured a great amount of physical and emotional pain because of their respective illnesses, they still took care of one another.  James, like the elderly man in The Notebook, tried to help his wife with her dementia by telling her stories about all of the great times they shared together, and Lauretta was constantly supporting James through the ups and downs with his heart disease.

Lauretta was by James’ side until the moment he passed away.  Shortly before James took his last breath, a family member took a picture of the two of them together as they gazed lovingly into each other’s eyes in James’ final living moments.  One of their grandchildren put the picture next to the couple’s wedding picture, and the two pictures went viral on the Internet.

James and Lauretta had nine children together, and none of their children are divorced.  The children attribute their strong, lasting marriages to having two parents who set a great example of a loving relationship for them.

Do you know of a couple whose marriage serves as a great example of what you believe a strong marriage should be?  Do you know of a couple whose love story parallels that of a love story in a movie, in a novel, or on TV?
