  • Having Fun for Free

We all know how the economy is right now so I try as best as I can to save where I can. Don't let anyone tell you you're being cheap or poor, it's being practical. My man and I aren't made of money and we still manage to have fun and get by.

Sometimes I like staying at the apartment and watching our shows rather than going to the clubs and bars, having people blow smoke toward your general direction causing your clothes to wreak of cigarettes.  I used to go out a lot when I was in college, but now that scene just doesn't appeal to me anymore; being shoulder to shoulder with people and having barely enough room to walk around.

I think now is a great time to reiterate this subject considering how things are with the economy.

What are some things you like to do for fun or at limited costs and/or for free?

Good topic, I'm always trying to think of stuff too.

One thing we are planning to do is find abandoned towns/houses around our area to do our own sort of 'haunted house' adventure, minus the crowds and the money.  Hopefully we won't get into any trouble though, haha.

    Like you, we have tv series we watch almost exclusively together.  We pirated movies sometimes too (;

    We play our instruments together

When it's nice out we have a picnic.

Obviously the picnic basket and food aren't free, but if you buy the basket once it's yours and then you can take whatever food you have around the house. Add a blanket and you've got yourself a romantic and comfortable lunch date.

Me and my S/O like to play games together.  Our first date, we met at Panera and played scrabble.  We get together with his family and have game day.  We bring out the cards and board games.  On good days we play crochet.  We love going to a local coffee house and we'll just get coffee and sit and talk, or read together.  We also go to poetry readings, poetry slams and story teller gatherings.  There are so many things to do without spending a lot.  Of course everyone may not like the things we like to do.  But it is great for us!

Go to the park for a picnic or browse a local arts festival. Key word...browse!

I am incredibly jealous of you.

my economic status is fine. my bf is a business man and I earn pretty well myself. we play free online games and try to out-do the other. we go shopping separately and then do a show and tell about what we bought for each other. we watch cartoons. we're grown adults but we act like a kid couple

Why would anyone pay a lot of money to go to a bar/club?  There are nights I go to clubs and don't even pay a dime.  You just have to have the connections.

  • flapper_femme_fatale@xanga

i still like going out now and then.  it's my excuse to get all dolled up.

most nights, though, i just have a few friends over.  we watch movies, smoke hookah, and get drunk.  then we stumble down to the 24-hour doughnut shop nearby.  it's always a good time.

I've done tons of things for free or at low cost because of couponing. Like a $40 dinner for $20, free ice creams, movies, amusement parks...

I always hit the warehouse sales for brand name clothing for cheap or go thrifting.

I<3 COUPONS. You cant beat free!!!

Going to the parks, festivals with free admission/free parking, or the beach always cheers me up. Not really into going to clubs/lounges anymore...something about having to yell every sentence over loud music has lost its appeal now that I am no longer in college.

Every now and then, my husband and I stay in on date night and have a trip down memory lane. We play super nintendo and eat junk food like we did when we were kids or watch 80's movies (and add a bottle of wine).

  • TheNotoriousGOD@xanga

wow, there are still places that allow smoking indoors?  sheesh, in ny you can't even smoke outside anymore.  i basically live to go to the club, but i would hate it if smoking was allowed indoors.

also, bad economy what?  i make more money now than i ever have before.  i still refuse to spend money on girls though.  i'd rather save for retirement.  things i like to do:  dessert (god knows there are enough fucking cupcake shops in the city), free city events, hanging out on the rooftop drinking an $8 bottle of wine.

@lttlegel@lovelyish - i have always wanted to do this, but i fucking hate cooking (plus i'm terrible at it, haha).  waiting for some nice girl who wants to cook all my shit for me.  you can skip the basket if you put all your food in the tupperware container though!

Well I went out with my man yesterday, and we had a picnic in the park, got some ice-cream, sat around and talked, went for a walk...it's pretty easy to find free/cheap things to do if you look hard enough. Too many people think that you've gotta spend money to impress, but I'd rather go on a date with someone who knew their budget and knew how to stick to it.

take our dog to the beach and then check out the sea view from a safe** cliff

go to the mountains for some extremely affordable restaurants with mountain-grown food. food is only about 10-15 for a very generous portion
    go to the botanical gardens
go to Points for site seeing of the city/sea etc
    picnics
    wildlife parks
    movies at home
    midnight frozen yoghurt

depends on how far you are from these destinations. i only live about less than 30 minutes to an hour away from most of them.. so it only costs us about 30 dollars for fuel(15 dollars each) to get there.

if we cant see eachother we play dota together.

This a little bit of a shameless plug...

Don't know if you've heard of Swagbucks, but it's a great way to be able to afford more in the tough economy. You can use it as a search engine, to fill out surveys, watch TV or to play games. All of these activities get you points, with which you can purchase electronics, gift cards or even just transfer money into your paypal account. My fiance and I recently went on a trip in which we got our plane tickets with southwest gift cards earned through swagbucks. we would have never been able to afford it without swagbucks!!

My husband and I use a local park as a central location, walk around it and then walk into surrounding neighborhoods just to explore/people watch/look at houses and talk. It's actually really fun.

We discuss books we're reading. We're taking the same classes, so we talk about the primary sources we're reading through, too, and it's great fun picking his brain. He's unusually knowledgeable/level-headed for his age.
We go to free museums in town! And free, outdoor theater shows in the summer. And when we want to spend money, we try out a different sushi/mediterranean restaurant in the metroplex.
And, of course, there's always Half-Price Books. :)
  • lttlegel@lovelyish

@TheNotoriousGOD@xanga - Picnics are seriously probably one of my favorite ways to spend time together. Eating sandwiches and sweet fruits and then laying on a blanket, watching the clouds, talking and/or reading a book while curled up together. All with the sunshin warming us.

Unfortunately we did not get to have a picnic this summer and it is too cold to have one now. But when it gets warm again, I will make sure that is one of the first things we do:)

    Try it sometime...well worth it!

I'm a fan of hiking, if it is available.  Museums are also great, especially if you're in the north/east where there is a lot of variety.  Somebody above suggested Botanical Gardens, those are really neat, especially if you've never been to one before.

We used to play frisbee golf around campus, the informal way... "Next hole is to that bench"... "Okay, now we're going to the lightpole across the street".  That was fun.  Frisbees are pretty cheap, and provided you aren't terrible and throwing them on rooftops all the time, they should last awhile.

Old television shows can be purchased for pretty good value... "News Radio" complete is 32$ on Amazon, which makes it about 1$/hour of television... "Firefly" is 18$ for the complete series, making it about 1.50$/hour of television.

As the weather starts to get cold, there's not much that beats a big thick blanket and a fireplace and talking.

If you and your partner are into nature, there's so much fun you can have together at very little cost.  Hit the bike trail for a nice scenic ride, hike up the hillside for a fantastic view of the city below, go sunbathing at the warm beaches or do a camping trip.  Once you get out of the city, the cost of fun significantly drops (although the cost of gas to drive there might be a bit expensive if you don't drive a Prius).  Now go out there and get some fresh air =)

On a slightly bias note, might I suggest rock climbing outdoors (specifically bouldering).  All you really need is a pair of rock climbing shoes.

My boyfriend and I are always looking for really cheap or free things to do. Sometimes, although this does cost gas money, we like to just take a drive and go down roads we're unfamiliar with, basically get lost, explore and try to find our way back home. Just yesterday we decided to grab some coffee and take a drive. We even stopped to look at an open house. It was fun looking around and imagining our future house and future life together!

    What she said^

Less cheaper would be a red box movie, something online, a good massage, a nap, some stupid story-telling, etc

    • About Me: YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY AMAZING? I JUST FOUGHT OFF 10 ARROGANT TROLLS WHO POST UNDER MULTIPLE NAMES ALL BY MYSELF. NOW THAT'S AMAZING. Real winners are those who are able to fight their own battles. :) #imtheonewhohasbraggingrights What is a "fight" when people pretend to be different multiple people acting like they have an advantage? Lol. Loves it. And the sad thing is, they still keep starting crap time and again though I always own them. They have no shame.
