In Japan, we have a problem with "chikan."
"Chikan" are men who molest young women on Japanese trains, which are some of the most crowded in the world. Generally, they feel these women up and sometimes even hold pocketknives by their underwear to prevent them from saying anything. The train is so crowded and people are pressed against each other, so these women often have no idea who is touching them.
Creepy, right? But it's not just a Japanese phenomenon.
For example, this happened to one of my best friends on a crowded NYC subway.
Or take my friend at Las Justas
, a major college party/tournament that takes place in Puerto Rico every year. She was standing on the street with a friend when a guy grabbed her vagina and walked away.
Others are slightly less outrageous but equally offensive - like the occasional guy who will grab a woman's ass as she walks down the street.
Thankfully, I have never had anyone touch me inappropriately in public. I don't know how I would react - maybe yell at them or just run away. Still, even the thought angers me, so I'm sure it must be horrible.Has a stranger ever touched you inappropriately in public?
