In Japan, we have a problem with "chikan."
"Chikan" are men who molest young women on Japanese trains, which are some of the most crowded in the world. Generally, they feel these women up and sometimes even hold pocketknives by their underwear to prevent them from saying anything. The train is so crowded and people are pressed against each other, so these women often have no idea who is touching them.
Creepy, right? But it's not just a Japanese phenomenon.
For example, this happened to one of my best friends on a crowded NYC subway.
Or take my friend at
Las Justas, a major college party/tournament that takes place in Puerto Rico every year. She was standing on the street with a friend when a guy grabbed her vagina and walked away.
Others are slightly less outrageous but equally offensive - like the occasional guy who will grab a woman's ass as she walks down the street.
Thankfully, I have never had anyone touch me inappropriately in public. I don't know how I would react - maybe yell at them or just run away. Still, even the thought angers me, so I'm sure it must be horrible.

I'm usually unphased by butt slapping or pinching or whatever. Sometimes I'll grab back. I can't say anything more has happened, or by a stranger nonetheless.
When I was in 6th or 7th grade my sister and I were playing with a foosball table that was on display at Walmart I was wearing a dress and this middle aged gentleman walked by and said "excuse me" and walked behind me but he put his hands out so they touched my butt as he walked by. I thought maybe it was an accident but then a minute later he came back through and did the same thing.
When I was 14 I was at Tae Kwon Do and a older male grabbed my ass. I felt really ashamed because of the obvious reason but also there was other people around. I ended up doing my class but when I was suppose to go back to my next class 2 days later I started to cry right before we got there. I told my mom and she didn't make me go back thank god. I think I was in to much shock when it happened to really think about how I should have just went home. I thought to myself that I made it up, that wouldn't happen but it did and I had to accept that. I had a friend who was in the same grade 9 class as me and she asked why I wasn't going to TKD. It was hard to explain period but she asked in front of a bunch of people as well. I am glad it wasn't anything like what happened on the subway.

Thankfully no, but that is probably why my husband and father, ensured I was trained in self-defense, if it came down to it.

Yup. On 3 separate occasions. All of which were my age, 2 of which were females. Shit happens.
In no way am I implying that kind of behavior is okay... However, I am directly saying that if a stranger decides to make physical contact with me that is of a sexual nature in a public setting, they run the risk that I might possibly find them attractive, rip their clothes off, and fuck them where they stand. It's not likely by any means... but ya never know.

Yes. I was on, coincidentally-not-really, an overcrowded city bus in a really big Eastern European/Middle Eastern city, seated, and a man decided that he was going to hump the side of my thigh. At first I thought the bumpy bus ride was just jostling him, but it became pretty clear when he persisted more strongly while the bus was still & tried to shift his clothes around so our bare skin was touching (I was wearing shorts...ah the misfortune). It was a little scary but I decided to ignore him...he had gotten on the bus after us and it went on for the whole trip.
Feeling a bit pissed about the whole thing, I looked at him pointedly when he followed me off the bus at a distance, and I made sure to meet his eyes and start laughing at him really loud. I really wish I knew whether or not he spoke English, because I would've insulted him, probably about his size or desperation or something. Don't want to hit a dude in his balls, I'd rather hit him in the ego...and he looked really, really unhappy and I felt a bit better. >:)
I still felt gross though and didn't wear shorts again for our time in that city (particularly not those ones. I actually still feel a little reserved about wearing them now, though it's warm enough where I live that I still could).

I turned around and saw the mexican run like crazy down the aisle!!! this happened a while ago when I was in high school. the store wasn't crowded. I remember wearing this long chiffon skirt and high heels, so I couldn't chase after him. I could take off my shoes, but my skirt was one of those restrictive types where it is difficult to run in. this was when I dressed up no matter where I went. I didn't report it or anything. I didn't even tell my mom. I quickly forgot about it later. I never encountered something like that because you'd think that they'd choose a crowded place and gradually disappear into the crowd and you'll likely never catch them, but this was in broad daylight and he went right up to me and then just ran for his life! nowadays, I pay attention to whoever is around me at the aisles and I'll walk to another aisle and come back later if they seem to be standing too close and look creepy. they might not be looking for an opportunity to molest, but just looking the opportunity to see what I'm looking at and compete with me to grab the item on the shelf just because they want to buy whatever I'm buying! I hate it when people compete with me to buy things when the entire store is nearly empty and they have to stand in the same aisle and get in my space
I've been grabbed by both guys and girls in public before, whether it's my butt or my front just depended on the time. Usually I just get stunned and just stand there. Was molested by a photographer one time too, but that wasn't in public. Usually just angers me, but not to the extent I would do anything. Pretty sure I got felt up on a train in Japan too, or coulda just been because it was so crowded I was I coulda been pressed up against by anything.

I remember this sort of thing happening to me when I was younger--like, elementery school-aged. On the playground, and it was always a certain boy. I just would freak out and try to get away if I could.

It happened to me once during my junior year maybe a month after I started going to public school. We had very small lockers and mine was the bottom one so I had to bend down to get one of my books. While I was bent down, someone grabbed my butt. By the time I had straightened up to look around, they were gone in the crowd. No idea who it was because there were so many people.
@firetyger@xanga - I too fell victim to a butt pinch/grab in high school. Though I knew who it was because when I turned around there she was. If it had been anyone else I might have been flattered but I think she was just messing with me.
