  • 5 Fabulous Broadway Musical Couples

A few months ago, I posted "15 Cute TV Couples, Then And Now," and there have been several posts all over the Internet about great movie couples. Now, I want to make a list devoted to a medium that doesn't get as much list-couple-love: Broadway. So without further ado, I present to you my 5 favorite Broadway musical couples. Now, I am not as much of a Broadway nerd as many people I know, so this is by no means a comprehensive list. But of the musicals that I've seen, these ones are my favorites.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead. But Broadway spoils the musical for you in the Playbills anyway, so...

    1. Angel & Tom Collins - Rent

Of the many couples in Rent, this is my favorite. Angel is a transvestite afflicted with AIDS who despite her illness teaches Collins and the rest of the Rent characters the importance of living for the moment. The movie version's "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" is one of the most heartwrenching scenes I've ever seen.

    2. Edna & Wilbur - Hairspray

Edna and Wilbur are an entirely mismatched couple.Wilbur is a tiny man, while Edna is an overweight old woman who is played by a male in almost all productions of this musical. But as main character Tracy falls hard for main heartthrob Link, it's nice to see her parents' relationship, a relationship that has gone past through all the little blips and arguments and still births the song "You're Timeless To Me."

    3. Sandy & Danny - Grease

Sandy and Danny share a summer romance. But when Sandy transfers to Danny's school in the fall, Sandy's innocence and Danny's bad-boy image clash. At the end, both Sandy and Danny try to change for each other, although it's only Sandy's new-found sexiness that stays. The message goes against the idea of staying true to yourself. Still, it's nice to see how willing they are to change for each other. And let's be honest - Sandy looks damn hot in that black bodysuit.

    4. Sam & Donna - Mamma Mia

Donna's daughter Sophie is getting married. Without her mother's knowledge, Sophie invites 3 men from Donna's past in an attempt to know who her real father is. But it's Sam who wins Donna's heart, and "SOS" portrays the heartbroken lovers who are still secretly in love beautifully.

    5.
Emmet & Elle - Legally Blonde

So what if this musical was initially a book that turned into a major chick flick? Although I can't speak for the book, the musical delves much deeper than the movie into the relationship between Elle, a blonde Harvard law student chasing after her ex, and Emmett, the sweet nerd who helps her stay in the academic deathtrap. "Chip On My Shoulder" is everything you need to know.

What do you think? Who's your favorite Broadway musical couple?
