  • My 5 Favorite Songs About Breaking Up or Losing Someone You Love

For the past couple of weeks I have been compiling all of my favorite songs having any and everything to do with relationships of any kind. This task has proven to be much more of an undertaking than I had anticipated and I am pleased to have one category finalized and published for you wonderful people. I decided to combined my "break up" and "lost relationship" categories, mostly so I could include Led Zeppelin (so sue me).

    Led Zeppelin: That’s The Way
I’ll admit I was never much of a Led Zeppelin fan at all until very recently and it was thanks in equal parts to my boyfriend and this song. I have a couple of interpretations about this song. One is that it is about a small child who is no longer allowed to be friends with the boy next door and he is unsure of how to deliver the sad news. Another is that the narrator has a childhood friend who has passed away and he is seeing him everywhere he goes. Either way, the song is (at least literally) about loss of some sort. The beauty in this song is so apparent in Robert Plant’s voice and the music in general (how does this not describe any Led Zeppelin song though). My favorite Led Zeppelin song of all time, I’m thrilled to have found an applicable place for it on here.

The Mountain Goats: Woke Up New
This beauty of this song lies in its realism. The lyrics perfectly describe the thoughts and motions one goes through the morning after a break up. You have about ten seconds of freshness before the reality of your new lifestyle sets in. The person you once loved is no longer there, isn’t coming back, and is no longer the biggest and most important part of your life. John Darnielle accurately describes all of this in the second video I posted. I personally prefer the studio version better than the live one, so I couldn’t help but include both.

The Killers: Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits cover)
Even if you have no specific relation to this song, the power of the story and the music will capture and wrap around your heart in a way that you’ll think you did. I prefer this cover to the original Dire Straits version because Brandon Flowers adds the extra passion and “umph” that the original lacks, therefore filling the song to the brim with emotion. Belting this song always makes me want to cry and has touched my heart in a very unexpecting way. Also, who doesn’t love a good, sad love story?

    Lady Gaga: Brown Eyes
Alright Datingish, this is my first and opportune time to reveal something very important about myself: Lady Gaga is my hero. No person in the world will ever be able to convince me that she is anything short of wonderful in every way. Her radical ridiculousness makes me love her that much more. She is beautiful, talented, creative, sexy, inspiring,  and strong. If she were a religion, I’d be in the top of the clergy. If I were Helga Patacki, I’d have a shrine featuring her head sculpted out of gum in my closet. Comprende? This song reminds me of my most prominent break up and I used to listen to this song on repeat because of that (we’ve all done it and we’ll all continue to do it). I love that while this song is a ballad and begins very toned down and sad, it builds into an angry tribute to past loves and asshole guys. Great song for hurting ladies.

Michale Graves:  Crying On Saturday Night
Rounding out this brilliant fivesome is a good ol’ Misfits song from the more recent Michale Graves era. The Misfits are regarded as the headliners of the horrorpunk subgenre and it doesn’t take any sort of genius to figure out why. This song, albeit morbid, is equally sad. The narrator’s girlfriend has been killed and he’s going through life without. How absolutely terrible. Tragic. If you turned on my iPod lately, chances are this is the song that is now playing. So good, so sad, so wonderful. The morbid doo-wop style first appealed to me, and the emotions from the lyrics soon followed. I hope you guys enjoy the dark loveliness that is this song.

Are any of these your in your top faves? What songs are?
