I am going to relate to you a story of the most intimate thing I have ever done (and no it's not THAT). There was a post a week or so ago about summer flings that brought this memory to the forefront of my mind. You see, this happened at summer camp a number of years ago.
Those of you who have been to a summer camp know how quickly and passionately feelings develop. It must be something in the bug juice? Well that's what happened between me and a girl I met one year. From the moment she and I shook hands and introduced ourselves, we felt a connection. The next three days (it would have been five but I arrived late and she left early) we talked and flirted back and forth, much to the chagrin of our camp counselors. But she was, as I said, going home early, and so on the final night I decided to make my move
I was still a teenager and very unsure of myself, so the questions of how and when to let her know I liked her plagued me. But our group of campers was to put on a skit for the other groups. We (our group) decided to make our skit about masks.
The guys sat in front facing the other groups. The girls sat behind the guys. The girls tried to apply makeup to the guys from behind so that they couldn't see and we (the guys) would end up looking like clowns! My interest was behind me doing her best to make me look like a fool. The message was all about authenticity and how, if you try and put on a facade, you end up looking like a fool
. When the skit was over my interest and I went to sit in the back while the other groups put on their respective skits. That skit of ours was pretty much the last thing we were going to do together so I knew it was now or never.
So I leaned over so that she could hear me and asked if I could see her hand real quick. She said, "Okay?" and held out her right hand. I took it in my left hand and held it. Oh my Lord did she melt
. She leaned her head against my shoulder and said she was going to miss me. But that moment, the first time we held hands, that was the first great example of the power of intimacy to me
She and I loved it so much that we ended up dating for the rest of the summer and into the fall. It was long distance as neither of us knew how to drive yet, but it was a wonderful relationship that I'll never forget. Obviously, it all started with that one intimate moment of holding hands. Do you hold hands with your significant other on a regular basis? Do you hold hands during sex? Do you remember the first time you ever held someone's hand?
