  • Republican Representative Todd Akin: 'Legitimate Rape' Victims Don't Get Pregnant

William Todd Akin, the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 2nd congressional district and current Republican Senate nominee, has made a bold claim. I've heard and read a myriad of doltish prattle coming from the direction of politicians, but I'm left scratching my head on this one. Representative Akin states, "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancies from rape are] really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

I'd love to see a citation of his sources, otherwise I'm left to assume that he's being consulted by the voices in his oddly shaped head, which may or may not be a sign that he was dropped repeatedly as a child. My guess is that he was; on the right-wing of the hospital he was born in.

What frightens me as an American is that we have people actively campaigning and voting for morons such as Representative Akin. How does an individual make it to a position of authority where they can potentially influence legislation with their fatuous ideas? My lunch meat is better prepared to serve the general public than some of these elephant/donkey-riding clowns.

Well, it's no secret that neo-conservatism is sweeping across the south where abortion and gay rights issues are hotly debated. In fact, Rep. Akin's statement may garner him even more support from pro-lifers. Unfortunately, party politics are of more importance to many Americans than voting based on educated stances. This guy could run on a platform hell-bent on hanging homosexuals and banning interracial marriage, and still have a shot at joining the U.S. Senate. It's unreal.

Demoncrats and Republican'ts have both had their share of gaffes. However, I'm truly astounded that in 2012, a grown, presumably seasoned man, can hold such neolithic beliefs. Representative Akin has tried to backtrack from his statement, claiming that he misspoke. Todd Akin most certainly tried pandering to religious neo-conservatives.

The 65-year-old U.S. Representative is hoping to unseat Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill this November.

It's clear to me that intelligence is not a prerequisite in this country when electing leaders, and the trend is sure to continue.

Have you ever encountered a person who holds scientifically-backwards views on pregnancies/sex? Did you get in an argument?

How can we better educate people without resorting to a shouting match leading nowhere?

"How does an individual make it to a position of authority where they can potentially influence legislation with their fatuous ideas?"

Easy. "We the people" elect people like that.

"Todd Akin most certainly tried pandering to religious neo-conservatives."

I think this was more of a case of him trying too hard to justify his stance and fucking up as a result. There are quite a few neocons I know who are just as pissed off as the rest of the folk out there about this.

if it's a legitimate bitchslap, then his face will have a force field helmet to deflect the assault if not, it ain't anybody's fault, but his own for not evolving and developing protection.

good article. the implications of his statement go deeper. his thinking has been the thinking of many Congressional republicans for a while but after saying it out loud republicans are scrambling to work the damage control, for one reason in particular. Akin's thinking is in line with Romney's VP pick Paul Ryan who boasts being the most pro life member of Congress. last year Paul Ryan co-sponsored a bill that would have redefined "rape" had it passed. fortunately the bill did not pass. Ryan also believes a woman should not be permitted to seek an abortion even in cases of rape and incest. although Akin is running for a seat in Missouri his statement has thrown the spotlight on Paul Ryan who holds in effect the same belief as Akin.

This is just stupid. :( There are plenty of women and people that can attest to the fact that rape can lead to a pregnancy. It's not like it happens for every rape, or even most, but it still happens. This man is just ridiculous.

I think we should go ask the women living in Croatia, Afghanistan and Iraq if rape does or doesn't lead to pregnancy...I have a feeling this would be a great place to do some observational research.

    Disgusting MoFo!!!

So glad to know that.  Whew!  Now I don't have to worry about being raped.

@QuantumStorm@xanga - I heard the republicans withdrew support from him and want him to withdraw from running.

I can understand not supporting abortion in any circumstances, but how did he come to believe a woman can't get pregnant after being raped?  I thought about that for a couple of days now and I'm wondering if there is something about the trauma that might change the chemistry of a woman's body to make it more unlikely to get pregnant after being raped?  Maybe one day when I have some time on my hands I'll do some research.

I don't even know what to say about Todd Akin's statements; you pretty much said it well.

I do think "legitimate rape" is an important topic. Some men get away with doing horrible things and some women are not all precious little truth-telling victims. There has to be a way of deciding who should rot in jail, so it has to be defined.

I found this interesting: Legally, consent is not legitimate if someone is drunk. Rape is sex that is without consent. I'm basically being told that if I am drinking I cannot consent to sex, with my boyfriend, and that I'm being raped. Legally.
That would be "illegitimate rape". If the government has to decide for you that you're being raped, i.e. a 17 year old and an 18 year old couple have sex (in states where age of consent is 18), it's illegitimate rape. That's just my logic though, it carries different connotations.

@Manic_Butterflies@xanga - when you say you're drunk with you boyfriend and you have sex, does that mean both of you are drunk? or just you? or just him? because you two probably have had sex before, and sober, it wouldn't be considered rape. i can see where the line might be blurred there.

  • Manic_Butterflies@xanga
@pretty_inx_plaid - technically the consent-giver would have to be sober in order for the consent to be given
  • crgrier@xanga

@Manic_Butterflies@xanga - I've never understood why the "consent-giver" is always the female.  If a man wakes up next a stranger, he can't claim he was raped, but she can.  How is that fair?

  • Manic_Butterflies@xanga

@crgrier@xanga - You're right. I suppose that's where my mind went since the topic at hand is pregnancy as a result of being raped.

What I'm attempting to do is allow them to live harmoniously, but it seems that I'm a terrible peacemaker, because they haven't stopped bickering or flinging spit-balls at one another. I write political satire, short stories, poems and... actually, I can pretty much write about anything; I'm flexible (not physically, unfortunately). If I had to choose, it would be writing softcore romance novels full of seduction, extramarital affairs and incredibly specific details. I'm kidding about that last part, I think.
