  • At What Age Did You Meet Your Spouse?

While looking for an icon for The Myth of Happy Marriages, I came across the above visual. It says, "By the age of 16, 80% of people have met who they are going to marry."

I have no idea where this statistic came from. A quick Google search implies that it's urban legend, which seems (thankfully) likely.

I think it's precious when married couples have known each other since they were really young. My friend's parents were next-door neighbors since birth and grew up together. If memory serves, they dated through high school, broke up to do their own thing for a few years, then got back together and got married.

As adorable as I find stories like this, part of their cuteness lies in their rarity. I presume that the couples in this 'statistic' aren't all supposed to have relationships like that of my friend's parents, but still.

If my calculations are correct, my parents met when my father was 24 and my mother was 31. But they also met when my Illinoisan father was studying abroad in Japan, so it would have been a bit difficult for them to meet at 16.

To be completely honest, I really hope that this statistic is urban legend. I think back to all the guys that I knew at 16, and I can't imagine marrying a single one. Even if they grew up and changed a LOT. And if it did happen, I would be a little weirded out.

Then again, life is full of surprises. So who knows?

How old were you when you met your spouse or life partner? How old were your parents?
