Congratulations to the newly engaged Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus!
Yes, you read that right. On May 31st, 22-year-old Hemsworth proposed to his girlfriend of 3 years, who happily accepted. The two met on the set of The Last Song in 2009.
As a young Hollywood couple - Cyrus is just 19! - the odds of this marriage working out are against the lovebirds. I'm sure you all remember Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' infamous 72-day marriage. Still, the couple has some long-lasting Hollywood relationships to aspire to.
1. Billy Ray Cyrus + Leticia Cyrus.
In 2011, Miley's country singer dad blamed the hit show Hannah Montana for "ruining [his] family." Something must have changed, though, because Billy Ray dropped his divorce papers several months later. Perhaps this was a good lesson for going through the hard times together for the newly engaged daughter? The couple have been married for 19 years.
2. Kurt Russell + Goldie Hawn.
This couple isn't technically married, but that hasn't hindered their 29-year relationship one bit. The two started dating in 1983 and have raised 3 children together, including famed actress Kate Hudson, from Hawn's previous relationship. The pair have no plans to get married, as Hawn told CBS News in April, "The question is, 'Why (get married)?' it's not, 'Why not?' We're in love. I wake up every morning. I love being with him. He brings me coffee. I give him a kiss. It's 'good morning.' We love each other. We fight the way people are supposed to fight. We love our lives together."
3. Will Smith + Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Will Smith and wife Jada are regularly touted as one of Hollywood's strongest marriages, and their is one of the longest-lasting in young Hollywood. The couple's 15-year union has remained strong despite divorce rumors last year, and has produced some pretty talented kids: son Jaden starred in The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid, and daughter Willow had a Top 20 hit and a viral video with "Whip My Hair." The couple have also raised Trey, Will Smith's son from his first marriage, and both have summer blockbuster releases. Jada starred in Madagascar 3, while Will is reprising his role in the third installment of the Men in Black franchise.
4. Kyra Sedgwick + Kevin Bacon.
Despite the recent revelation that these actors are actually distant cousins, their 23-year marriage is still going strong. The couple, who met on the set of Lemon Sky, have been married since 1988. Sedgwick stars in hit TV show The Closer, and Bacon is known for his prolific screen career that spawned the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon."
5. Paul Newman + Joanne Woodward.
Newman passed away in 2008, but not before celebrating his 50th anniversary that same year with Joanne Woodward, according to the New York Daily News. The two met in 1953, when Woodward was an understudy in "Picnic," Newman's Broadway debut. This marked the beginning of a long personal and professional relationship. Newman and Woodward appeared in several movies together, and Newman directed his wife in Rachel, Rachel, a Best Picture nominee. Newman is famous for telling Playboy about his marriage, "I have steak at home. Why go out for a hamburger?"
6. Martin Sheen + Janet Templeton.
Charlie Sheen's life may be a mess right now, but his parents' marriage certainly isn't to blame. The Hollywood mainstay celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary to wife Janet this past December. Other than Charlie, the pair have 3 more children - actors Emilio, Ramon, and Renee Estevez.
7. Julie Andrews + Blake Edwards.
Blake Edwards, who directed the romantic classic Breakfast at Tiffany's, had a movie-worthy romance of his own with Julie Andrews. The pair met when Edwards directed Andrews in Darling Lili in 1967. Married in 1969, the pair were together for 41 years before Edwards' death in 2010.
8. Michael J. Fox + Tracy Pollan.
In sickness and in health. Michael and Tracy had no idea what they were getting into when they said these vows, as Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease just 3 years after their wedding day. But when this couple said these vows, they meant it. Their union has lasted 24 years, and they have 4 kids together. Fox told Oprah in 2002, "When we married, we married - and that was it. We were in love then, as we are now, and we planned to stay married."
Will Miley and Liam last? Who are your favorite Hollywood couples?

Call me a cynic, but I don't think Miley and Liam will last as long as the celebrity couples featured. However, they may just surprise us. I mean, Miley and Liam have been together for three years so it's possible.
If I ended up with a Hemsworth that wasn't Chris, I would feel so gypped.
@Grtt@xanga - There's no way she could get Chris, so Liam's her consolation prize heh. Though Liam seems like a nice kid too.
Well least they've been together already for a few years rather than just jumped into a relation and trying to get married. I think it'll be tough though, I don't see Miley's career going much farther than it is right now, and I can see Liam doing well over the next few years. Will probably be hard for Miley to deal with that, which is the cause of a lot of celebrity fights/break ups. Hopefully they do fine though.
@Grtt@xanga - Agreed.
I'll be surprised if they last longer than 3 years. She's young & reckless, so I'm sure she'll change her mind or prove too immature for him sooner or later.
Well, it would be nice if they get married and stay married without infidelity rearing it's ugly head over the course. I'm kind of a skeptic, seeing as hollywood marriages/relationships seem to have a higher rate of divorce than success. I did hear the reason Billy Cyrus initially filed for divorce was over the fact that her mother had an affair.
kurt & goldie and will & jada. they are always smiling. they are too lovable.
I'm not a fan of miley or liam, so I don't care if they last or not
I also like jason momoa & lisa bonet. she's short as me, so I can imagine me as her when I look at their pics
pfft, I'd totally make a cuter couple with him
they are probably the only hollywood couple, whom I'm jealous of. he's so gorgeous and has that exotic look that I love. johnny depp is also part german, irish and native american, so no wonder they have similar looking features. jason is also hawaiian, so he has that extra edge or maybe because he's 6'4" and I'm often drawn to tall guys, who also have super hot bods
omg jason portraying kahl drogo*sighhh* super hot.
I honestly don't care about either of them. But I wanted to comment on their ages and the whole "OMG THEY'RE TOO YOUNG" stuff.
People forget that getting engaged doesn't always mean getting married ASAP. My best friends got engaged after being together for only a year and they were only 19! But they just knew that's where things were headed and they plan on being engaged until they are both finished school. They're both turning 22 this year and getting closer towards actually making wedding plans. Anyway the point is that engagement means different things to people-there's no set timeline everyone must follow.Maybe Miley & Liam will be engaged for 5 years and then get married. Maybe they'll get hitched ASAP and live in marital bliss forever. Maybe not (which is kinda likely considering how flighty she is, but whatever). You get the idea.
Eh, I really don't think they'll last. I like Liam, but Miley seems way too immature to commit to an engagement, let alone a marriage. Maybe she'll prove me wrong, though.
Comparing the 22 year old couple to these legendary superstar couplies is kind of.... uh... well optimistic. Good luck Miely.
Tom Hanks and his wife should be on this list.
this website is very good, you can go and see it

I hate how cynical most people are about young couples. I do realize that the odds are against them. But true love can withstand everything. (here come rolling in the "you're so naive" comments) And next, when I get married I will not, I repeat, WILL NOT, be getting a pre-nup. (here come some more comments). I really don't think a pre-nup is necessary for me, because divorce is NOT an option for me. I really think that if more people thought like that, the divorce rates wouldn't be so high. But a lot of people give up way to easily. Maybe they are too young to get married. I don't know them, but age isn't the issue. It's their maturity. If they aren't mature enough to understand what marriage really is then the will not last. But, I'm hoping that they will. They are adorable and they've already lasted quite a while dating.
Only time will tell of Miley and Liam will last. I hope they will be happy, and create a lasting relationship. Will and Jada Smith and Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are among some my favorite Hollywood long-term couples.
@smile4leena@xanga - Good suggestion!
hmmmmm
i think they're a good couple. but who knows, the divorce rate is high for people under 25. so we'll see. i think shes a pretty savvy woman though.
Interesting article. There is one correction however: Truman Capote wrote the original Breakfast at Tiffany's. Blake Edwards directed the adapted film.
This article would be 10x better without the mention of Miley Cyrus.
She's just walking right in Britney's steps, I think.. but I do hope it works out & she does some growing up.
@Grtt@xanga - TRUE THAT.
How many of those couples got engaged at 19/22?
If Miley wasn't an idiot, I'd say they might have a chance.
Did Kyra Sedgewick and Kevin get married in 1998 or have they been married 23 years?
Ahh I'm so jealous, Liam is a dream <3 Not like life would've put him on my path anyway :P but she's a lucky girl. good for her
@P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - he's delicious. why can't plane janes like ourselves (like HER) find god like men around our areas (that keep themselves grounded)? I always wonder. I mean, she's a plane jane, nothing special.... wonder what it is
@ayy_lolita@xanga - her ex-husband is lenny kravitz. he had dreadlocks. jason used to have dreadlocks. she has dreadlocks. maybe we need some dreadlocks to attract hot men with dreadlocks like him
