How to Spend Your Valentine's Day

It's already February which means Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I know a lot of people say it's just a Hallmark holiday, or that we shouldn't use Valentine's Day as an excuse to do the things for our significant others that we should be doing all along. I don't necessarily disagree with such a statement, but I do still celebrate the holiday. To be honest, I sometimes do need an excuse to do something extra romantic. I mean, it's easy to surprise L with a random mixed CD I compiled, but my creativity usually falls short beyond that on any given day we spend together. The truth is, we've been together long enough that we fall into patterns when we see each other: hang out, maybe go see a movie, almost always go to dinner somewhere, go out with friends, go for a hike if it's warm out. Even though we don't spend as much time together as we like, these things tend to get a little monotonous. Our hundreds of meals together somehow blend into one.
That being said, I'm struggling this year to really put together a great Valentine's Day weekend. It's extra difficult for me because L's birthday is the week immediately following February 14.
Some ideas for if you're a little short on cash:
- Cook dinner together.
- Make chocolate-covered berries or pretzels. Feed them to each other.
- Read your favorite love stories to each other by candlelight.
- Watch his/her favorite movie and then watch yours immediately following.
- If it's temperate where you live, go for a hike.
- Travel to the nearest body of water and have a picnic.
- Send flowers. It seems cheesy, but with it being such a cliche less and less people actually do this.
Some ideas for if your wallet is plentiful:
- Get a reservation at an expensive restaurant at which you wouldn't normally dine.
- Share a bottle of champagne and some strawberries.
- Each of you make your own mix of your favorite songs and then listen to the playlists back-to-back while driving aimlessly. (This one seems inexpensive, but gas prices are pretty crazy...)
- Rent a cabin or a hotel room at a vacation destination nearest to you for a night and spend as much time as you can exploring the area.
- If there aren't any great destinations nearby, rent a hotel room and spend the whole weekend ordering room service and spending time completely isolated from the outside world.
- Instead of panicking about what kinds of gifts to get each other, spend an afternoon shopping together and help pick out gifts for each other. It seems oddly unromantic and thoughtless, but even for L and myself as two people who feel like we know everything there is to know about each other, sometimes gift-giving can be tricky and difficult.
I urge you to get on it fast. I waited too long already to start seriously thinking about what I wanted to do with L. Who knew Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket would be mostly booked in February?
Will you celebrate Valentine's Day? How?

No celebration necessary. Single for life and proud of that fact.
sadly I will be attending school in the morning and studying by night.
I doubt my boyfriend even remembers which exact day is valentine's day.
but to make myself feel better, i will join the group "who need special love on a specific day? everyday should be filled with love"
I went to dinner once on Valentine's Day and I will never do it again. The experience in and of itself was quite nice and nothing bad happened, but I would much rather go out to dinner on a night where the wait isn't 45 minutes and it isn't quite so busy.
This year I will be spending my Valentine's Day happily sitting in my sweatpants eating Chipotle with my boyfriend.
its funny, neither of us really "like" the idea of valentines day but we always end up doing SOMETHING. usually, sitting in PJs eating chocolate and watching movies all day together. works for me!
My boyfriend and I have been long distance since May, and it just so happens that he is moving here a few days before Valentine's Day. So we will definitely be celebrating, not just the holiday but finally being together again! Last year I cooked us dinner, but this year we're going out to a nice restaurant - I'm sort of a sloppy cook, and it's hard to have a nice, romantic dinner when you're covered in bits of food and you look like a wreck from running all over the kitchen. lol. We're going to go a few days before Valentine's Day though, because the nice restaurants tend to be crowded on Valentine's Day.
This one doesn't seem to be such a great idea "Read your favorite love stories to each other by candlelight." Sounds boring. I like the idea of picking out gifts together!
I'm writing a letter(not a love letter) to a female celebrity. I'm still figuring out what to say. It'll be posted on my blog that day.
I thought guys just wanted me to model different lingerie for them at a catwalk show
we'll go hiking in the woods and possibly get mauled by a mountain lion instead. how lovely.
Normally my husband and I like to stay home and cook dinner, watch chick flicks and snuggle
We've been out on Valentine's Day before, most of the time it was hectic and hurried, but one year, a couple years ago we went out and it was nice. We were both sick as dogs, but we had a gift certificate and a reservation so we went anyway. The dinner was lovely, the service friendly, accurate and attentive and great company. I'd do it again...if we receive a nice gift card to that restaurant...
My boyfriend is in the military and is currently at training for the whole month completely across the state. This is the first Valentines Day for us as a couple. Sadly, he wont be able to spend it with me. I plan on recording the super bowl, because unfortunately he'll be missing out on that too, making him all sorts of fancy finger foods, dinner, and of course his favorite thing brownies for desert when he gets back as my gift to him for Valentines Day. I don't think he has anything planned for me, but he is the kind of guy to come up with an epic surprise. :]
Going out the day before valentines day to avoid all the craziness.
Travel to the nearest body of water? Lmao

We probably won't do anything since Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday which is one of the days of the week that I'm at school all day and doing homework and studying all evening. But I still managed to buy him a BIG and cute card and am going to run to the store to purchase his favorite chocolate to go with it. I guess I will just leave it at his work desk before I head on out to school.
I feel like people saying valentine's day is a hallmark holiday/who needs one day to express love is becoming a cliché itself. Do what fits best for you. I mean I rather watch a hockey game, eat wings and have a beer. My best friend thinks a day of rock climbing or bungee jumping is romantic. As much as the idea may appeal to girls, personal touch also needs to be considered.
I like the shopping idea! my boyfriend and I have been going out for 5 years, I feel like it would be a fun trip for us :)
I buy chocolate the next day for half off. not at all pathetic.
Haha, feed chocolate covered berries to each other? I'd choke on them from laughing too hard. Usually I'm alone on Valentine's Day, but I do have a boyfriend this year, just chances are that we won't do much of anything. I've already told him that I'm not a fan of the holiday, plus he works during the week.
I'll be working.
i was never one to celebrate valentines day but now since i have someone...it's gonna be weird.
I've never really been the romantic type. But my boyfriend bought me tickets to a gig for my birthday (my favorite band!!) the day after valentines day, we're going to stay in a really nice hotel in the city.
I hate Valentine's Day, but my boyfriend always makes me do something. This year, though, it can't be done. Both of us get home after 8pm from school on Tuesdays. There's just no time to go to dinner after that, especially when he has to be up at 6:30am the next day. So, oh well. He may make me do something else the weekend before or something. Who knows. I just highly dislike the day for many reasons. I don't like to be happy on Valentine's Day. =/
The day after freakin' rocks, though. 'Cause you go to the stores and clean out the half price candy and such. =]

My guy is on the East Coast. I'm stuck in the Midwest.
We'll probably just have some sort of romantic video chat.i thought it said, "i encourage you to get it on fast." don't have to tell me twice.
I've never been a fan of Valentine's Day before, but the BF and I have kind of turned into that over-the-top cutesy romantic couple, so I'm sure we'll do something. He mentioned celebrating the weekend before, so we don't have to worry about school/work the next day. I'm thinking a visit to the zoo where we had our second date and really started hitting it off. Even if a lot of the animals are off exhibit for the winter, it's free, fun, and it has significance in our relationship. :)
