20 Great Love Songs to Show Your SO
I wanted to do a post on the greatest love songs of 2011, but after some research I'm finding that, at least in my opinion, there aren't enough to which I would really pay homage. A while back, I did a post on my personal favorite sex songs of all time, but this list is going to be a little different. This is a list of 20 of my favorite love songs of all time (in no such order), instead of the best of this year:
- Brian McKnight- 6, 8, 12: This song, like many on this list, probably never crossed your minds as a remarkably different love song. The truth is, it isn't different. It's simple and it's beautiful. "I miss you so much and I don't know what to say." We know this song is a sad one-- it is about a love lost. Sometimes, these kinds of songs are the ones best fitted to remind us of what we do have and what we know we can't bear to lose.
- The Isley Brothers- For The Love Of You: If you've ever heard it, I shouldn't have to advertise. Sometimes, I think this is my favorite song of all time. Period. Watch how many times I say that on this list.
- John Mayer- In Your Atmosphere: Yes, you already know that I'm crazy about John Mayer's music. What you probably don't know is that this gem is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Like McKnight's 6, 8, 12, this song is about a love lost. It's a candid and poetic display of emotions written in a way I could only ever dream of writing. The line that gets me every time? "I'd get lost on the boulevard at night without your voice to tell me 'I love you, take a right.' The ten and the two is the loneliest sight." Flawless.
- Adele- Make You Feel My Love: This is actually a cover of a Bob Dylan song, and normally I wouldn't advocate a cover over the original, but Adele's voice is too beautiful to pass up. It makes this song more romantic than the original... perhaps, 10-fold. I'm not always an Adele fan, but this song is unbelievable.
- Bethany Joy Galeotti- Feel This: Admittedly, I may have found this because I used to watch One Tree Hill back when it was good, but that show was really all about music, anyway. I love this song.
- Beyonce- Halo: I shouldn't have to explain this one, but I will anyway. It's a modern-day hit, but it's definitely a diamond in the rough of so-called "pop" hits. Why? Because it isn't pop.
- Dave Matthews Band- You and Me: One of Dave's greatest... not to mention that it's romantic in a whimsical way.
- Dashboard Confessional- The Widow's Peak: Dashboard has a great many love songs. Perhaps, they have more than any other band for me. Yet, a year and a half ago it was this song that was playing when I was standing on a snowy mountain in the summer that made me realize there was nothing L and I could go through that would stop me from wanting to be together. It was a rough patch silenced by this song. For that, I will forever be indebted to Chris Carrabba.
- Gavin DeGraw- Belief (Stripped Version): For reasons I can't quite explain. I guess it's personal.
- Jessica Simpson- I Wanna Love You Forever: Don't laugh at me, okay? Her voice is beautiful and so is this song.
- John Hiatt- Angel Eyes: This song is a bit cheesy, but John Hiatt's a great musician and I love his voice therefore it gets to me a bit.
- K-Ci & Jojo- All My Life: Beacuse, duh, it's fucking K-Ci & JoJo. This song is my JAM.
- Los Lonely Boys- More Than Love: Both lyrically and musically (like so many on this list), this song is perfect.
- Kina- I Love You: No, not Kina Grannis. I don't know how this song was found so good luck finding it. But, find it. It's incredible.
- *NSYNC- This I Promise You: This list doesn't really pay enough homage to the boy bands of the '90s. The truth is, I could write an entire list based simply off of the Backstreet Boys' albums. That's why they aren't on here. I couldn't pick just one. With *NSYNC, it came a little easier.
- Something Corporate- Globes & Maps: This song is so secret to me. You're welcome.
- Rick Seibold- Can't Go On: I love the lyrics in this song. He just sets it up like forever isn't something to be scared of; it's great.
- Trisha Yearwood- I Would've Loved You Anyway: Unbelievable.
- U2- With Or Without You: Perhaps one of the hardest songs to listen to during a break-up. Something about Ross and Rachel.
- Whitney Houston- I Will Always Love You: Again, with the covers, I know. This is 500x more amazing than Dolly Parton's, though. Sorry, Dolly.
Although L already knows all of these songs, I'm gifting this mix the next time we see each other.
Have you ever given your SO a mix of your favorite love songs/songs that remind you of him/her? What are your favorites? Do you know any great love songs from 2011?

Ha, I was pretty sure I was one of the only people left listening to Los Lonely Boys.
Some of my favourites off the top of my head are Ben Folds' The Luckiest and REM's At My Most Beautiful. I have a whole playlist of lovey-dovey though, hah.
We both listen to very dark black metal/death metal so when we listen to stuff like this we're pretty trashed and there's lots of laughing and "don't tell anyone"-ing. Though none of these songs are ones we listen to.
You didn't list any songs from The Beatles. LAME.
Good Thing by Reel Big Fish. :DD it was myine and my fiance's first song, "our song"
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Agreed!
I gave my boyfriend a mixtape for our one year, and I'm giving him another before he goes abroad... and he'll be gone during our two year anniversary. "Popular" love songs weren't on the tapes, though. I tried to put bands we both liked/I liked and songs he probably hasn't heard. Lots of The Weepies <3 I also put a couple classic artists on there--this time it was Frank Sinatra and Patsy Cline. But I guess not everyone likes oldies. (:
one very important thing this list is missing is an 80's rock ballad. it's practically a crime to make a list of love song without paying tribute to their lost art. and it would keep your boyfriend from falling asleep halfway through the list.
First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes. :)
My favorite love songs: Something by The Beatles, Such Great Heights the cover by Iron & Wine, I Want to Sing by Regina Spektor, You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates, The Luckiest by Ben Folds, You and I by Ingrid Michaelson, I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie, First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes, The Nicest Thing by Kate Nash, We Both Go Down Together by The Decemberists, Who'd Have Known by Lily Allen, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths, Just Like Heaven by The Cure, Us by Regina Spektor, Simeon's Dilemma by WHY?
And lord knows how many more songs I'm in love with that just weren't off the top of my head!
all my life is a timeless classic that will never die! i loveeeeeee this song! AHHH! nsync back to my teenyboppin' days haha! my first love made me a mix which i still have but haven't listened to it but i remember one song he put on there was when the last teardrop falls i forgot who it's by though..
ohh monica for you i will and angel of mine
My current favorite love song is You by Chris Young.
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Also agree! How can you not put any Beatles???
Dolly > Whitney. Sorry.
@Shytooth@xanga - I pretty much love all of that.
This music is all crap. How about 60s music - especially The Beatles? That's when the best love music was written. The 70s also had good love songs.
I love the diversity of this playlist! And I know like 90% of the songs already! The rest I am totally gonna check out! :)
Bring Me Your Love and Northern Wind by City & Colour! That man knows about love, you can't fake songs like that.
I did. More than once. Those include All My Life, Shayne Ward's Breathless, A Fine Frenzy's You Picked Me, When You Say Nothing At All, Truly, Madly Deeply, Colbie Caillat's songs and the list goes on. I'll also check out the songs from your list.
