  • Pokemon Brought Us Together

Every couple has an interesting story of how they met their significant other. It could be something as simple as through a friend of a friend or as far out as they met at a hospital and the girlfriend was the nurse and the guy was getting open heart surgery. Random happenstance or a casual occurrence; there is a tale to tell.

For my boyfriend and I, we met at a Pokemon party. Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking. Nerdy. And I won't disagree! When people ask me how we met, it doesn't seem so dorky when I think it in my head... that is, until the thought comes out of my mouth. It is rather on the nerd side, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

It was the beginning of April (around the time the new Pokemon Black and White game was released in the US) and a friend of mine was having a party, so that a few of his friends could all bring their DS' and play the newest game of Pokemon. I was one of the only few girls attending, so in a way I felt kind of left out regardless even if I was there to play as well.

After everyone was done battling/trading, people starting exchanging friend codes. That was when he approached me and said the first and only few words to me throughout the party.

"Friend code?" he asked, offering out his DS to sync up with mine. I'm rather shy with people I don't know (especially in large groups) and so I only nodded, but then realized my battery had died mid-party and declined his offer. He made this slight pout and shrugged his shoulders, muttered something along the lines of "sucks to be you," and walked away.

In that instant, I knew I wanted to date that guy. He was the figment of absolute nerd-dom from his DSi XL and level 80 Chandelure up to his black, rectangle rimmed glasses. But once the party was over and everything was said and done, I didn't talk to him or even try to get his phone number, which I mentally kicked myself for not doing so.

However, about 2 months later, our paths crossed again over Facebook and we began chatting. We had more in common than I expected and it didn't take him long to ask for my number. After a few lunch dates, phone calls, text conversations, we finally made "us" official.

We're still together now and Pokemon (as nerdy as it seems) is still a part of our relationship. During Pokemon gameplay, I told him I had fallen in love with him by rearranging the nicknames of his Pokemon party. To some people, it is stupid, childish, and rather dorky, but it is what is and I wouldn't wish it any other way. I love my nerd.

Anyone else out there have a silly story to tell about how you met your significant other?
