In Terms of Sex, Reality is Better Than Your Dreams

A recent paper was released entitled “Sex Dreams, Wet Dreams, and Nocturnal Emissions,” indicates that reality might be better than our dreams, at least in terms of sex. While research has perpetually shown that physical arousal occurs in both genders during REM sleep (erections in males, clitoral engorgement in females), this does not necessarily translate into the sexual content of our dreams. The study interviewed college-aged males, asking them to fill out a questionnaire involving various sexually charged dreams they have had (ranging from foreplay to vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse.) The respondents on average only had nine sex dreams in a year
While the study has a few flaws, such as only testing one gender and one age group, this article purports that research has indicated a similar level of sexual dreaming for females.
A strict Freudian might argue that we are all repressing our sexual impulses, and cannot even remember the content of our dreams enough to report in a study without intense psychotherapy.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the study is that apparently most often our sexual dreams involve strangers. That means you are more likely to fantasize about the attractive, aloof combat-booted coffee shop barista from three weeks ago, then you are about the crush you’ve had for 9 years on your best friend (or, you know, your SO).
How often do you have sex dreams? Are they most often involving strangers or your partners?

Oh yeah...
Real sex is better than dreaming... you get the orgasm, your dreams don't.
freud totally had oedipus complex and, for some reason, was convinced that everyone who had a mental problem did too. i don't believe anything he says.
Uhh, am I the only one missing how the story got its title? You mention nothing about the actual quality of sex in the story.
i have never had a sex dream, that i recall at least. never ever. =/ maybe a sensual dream where there is sexual tension but that is as much as i dream in regards to sex.
I have them once in awhile. I can't exactly say that they're always better then reality. My sex life in reality is great but when I do dream about sex it can be more exciting then in real life because it usually involves something I wouldn't be able to do normally. I have a good mix of them involving my partner, people that I find attractive and see on an occasional basis or people I made up in my head. I don't think I've had a sex dream about a stranger though.
Lol, always, I guess? I don't know, all of my dreams are in-depth stories, often novel-length and plotty, and there are almost always sex scenes. I don't mind--great time to practice my technique.
Partner!! When younger, others, but now just HER!! Peace
Not often and usually with no one else or with someone I know but not my partner.
My sex dreams always pale in comparison to the actual thing. I barely remember my dream the next day but I remember good sex I had a month ago.
in my dream, i thought i saw my SO having sex with OTHER women (yes, more than one) while I'm yelling at him to stop. I don't know what that means but I've had SENSUAL dream where the tension between my SO is building, and we're so close but I wake up....or alarm goes off or whatever.
so...no, I can't recall I ever had SEX in my dream...
I don't remember them. the sex if it ever occurred in my dreams must've sucked
I feel like I have sex dreams quite a bit, and every one I remember was with my SO. They're also better than reality, but I have a very active imagination.
I had one about my ex last night! weird!
Very, very rarely do my sex dreams involve strangers. They usually involve people I know/am dating/was dating and occasionally people I know and would never EVER think about in a sexual way (such a a coworker of my mom or a family member of someone I'm dating). Sometimes the scenarios are way better than anything I've ever done in real life, but real sex is always better than dream sex.
The level of release of tension and stress is similar, whether it's happening IRL or during sleep, however (I tend to have sexual dreams more often when in states of high emotional or physical strain).
I've got such great stamina I've never had a nocturnal emission.
I am so glad you posted this because for about the past two weeks I've been having a sex dream or TWO almost every night! Sometimes it's someone I know, sometimes it's a stranger representing my dream man. I must be awfully sexually frustrated! lol
