  • In Terms of Sex, Reality is Better Than Your Dreams

A recent paper was released entitled “Sex Dreams, Wet Dreams, and Nocturnal Emissions,” indicates that reality might be better than our dreams, at least in terms of sex.  While research has perpetually shown that physical arousal occurs in both genders during REM sleep (erections in males, clitoral engorgement in females), this does not necessarily translate into the sexual content of our dreams.

The study interviewed college-aged males, asking them to fill out a questionnaire involving various sexually charged dreams they have had (ranging from foreplay to vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse.)  The respondents on average only had nine sex dreams in a year

While the study has a few flaws, such as only testing one gender and one age group, this article purports that research has indicated a similar level of sexual dreaming for females.

A strict Freudian might argue that we are all repressing our sexual impulses, and cannot even remember the content of our dreams enough to report in a study without intense psychotherapy.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the study is that apparently most often our sexual dreams involve strangers.  That means you are more likely to fantasize about the attractive, aloof combat-booted coffee shop barista from three weeks ago, then you are about the crush you’ve had for 9 years on your best friend (or, you know, your SO).

How often do you have sex dreams?  Are they most often involving strangers or your partners?

    • About Me: A recent 23 year old NYC transplant. In college I studied Creative Writing, Gender Studies, and Art History, which clearly translates into a trifecta of professional desirability. I can often be found reading, writing, playing very sloppy guitar, eating peanut butter, and swapping love life stories with my friends due to our plethora of failed relationships. I was voted Funniest Girl in high school, and am perpetually attempting to drop that in casual conversations without having it appear that I am still desperately clinging to it (which, let's face it, I am).
