I’ve Got That Patient Boyfriend Who Will Teach Me French
I didn’t have the option of taking a foreign language until I attended high school. By then, I had heard so much ecclesiastical Latin in my Catholic school that I wanted to learn Latin more than anything else, even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to speak it to anyone besides my classmates and people in the Vatican City.
My boyfriend took French for seven years, though I convinced him to take Latin all throughout his college career. I write him poems and letters in Latin because I know a very small percentage of people in the world would be able to read what I wrote—it was like having a special code language only we knew.
After traveling to other parts of the world, I realized how useful knowing another language (that people actually speak…) can be. I asked my boyfriend to start teaching me French.
He claims he only remembers the basics of conversational French, but that’s enough for me to learn for now. He’s going to be a high school teacher come September and I like to think giving me lessons in French is some practice time for his teaching skills, especially since teaching someone a new language requires lots of patience.
I want to return the favor soon and start teaching him how to play the piano. We’ve been talking about learning Spanish together through one of those instructional CDs next summer. I think being able to share a learning experience with an SO is a cute way to encourage each other towards a certain goal—you get to watch all the funny mistakes, see how your SO learns best, and cheer each other on—especially when neither person has any prior experience.
Have you and your SO taught each other new hobbies, languages, or skills? Have you made an effort to learn something new together?

we teach eachother the best we can to get by.
He teaches me pool.
And I hope in the end I taught him how to be kinder.
I taught him how fragile relationships are.
And I hope in the end we will be cured.
he taught me backgamon, and how to make mochas
I taught him about music and bikes and taught him about the wonders of technology
My ex tried teaching me piano, I didn't learn too much from him but did catch a bit, he's not bad. He also introduced me into playing Ragnarok and Minecraft, both that I really love. I can't remember what I've taught him, we've been through a lot together so my mind draws a blank so far.-.
My boyfriend teaches me a lot of useless science and history facts that I would never think of looking up. We're both major nerds so I can't say I'm uninterested in them. :)
@anchoredreams@xanga - Ahhh! That's pretty cool--do you teach him stuff from your nerd-end? My boyfriend and I are both English/literature/Latin nerds so we're always talking about the same things and both end up fascinated by science facts!
@dangelb - I teach him psych facts and about criminal justice stuff. We pretty much make each other well rounded I guess?
My bf is German. He dont want to teach me his language (he says that he would help me practice it if I take lessons with a professional teacher).
I have a master in nutrition science and now that he is into working out wants me to teach him about nutrition. Maybe I should tell him to consult a certified nutritionist.
We went to a climbing taster course together. It was fun even though one time my feet didn't touch the ground anymore when I tried to let him down because of the weight difference. We have yet to go again.
We started playing speedminton together.
He taught me breaststroke when we were on vacation.
I had most fun when we designed and built a hamster cage ^_^
I'd never want my partner to actually sit down and teach me something - I don't think I'd take that very well! But I'd love to go out and learn something WITH him.

that's cute :)
He tries to teach me about computers and video games. I try to teach him about biology, gardening, plants, history and a myriad of other things that interest me. I have successfully taught him to like riding horses, though it was probably the sheer greatness of it more than me, and to appreciate animals as more than big furry things walking around that we may or may not eat. He has taught me that there is a legitimate reason to watch the WWE and that reason is 'eye-candy'. We have taught each other to love again and to trust the true intentions of each other.
I love it when couples can learn things from each other! Makes for good bonding! My boyfriend taught me how to read numbers in binary. We teach each other the languages we learned in high school. It's fun. :)
He's the teacher, I'm the learner. It could be the age difference. He teaches me how to fish, play pool, drive, speak a bit of Spanish, math, etc. I wish i could teach him a few things besides Catholicism.
My boyfriend taught me a lot of things he didn't realize he taught me. Like Googling EVERYTHING. Getting into old-fashioned movies. Some Spanish. How to not stress as much. I taught him how to speak some of my language.
i'm teaching my boyfriend sign language and hes teaching me french (he's fluent). I love that we can both teach other something especially languages.
