  • I’ve Got That Patient Boyfriend Who Will Teach Me French

I didn’t have the option of taking a foreign language until I attended high school. By then, I had heard so much ecclesiastical Latin in my Catholic school that I wanted to learn Latin more than anything else, even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to speak it to anyone besides my classmates and people in the Vatican City.

My boyfriend took French for seven years, though I convinced him to take Latin all throughout his college career. I write him poems and letters in Latin because I know a very small percentage of people in the world would be able to read what I wrote—it was like having a special code language only we knew.

After traveling to other parts of the world, I realized how useful knowing another language (that people actually speak…) can be. I asked my boyfriend to start teaching me French.

He claims he only remembers the basics of conversational French, but that’s enough for me to learn for now. He’s going to be a high school teacher come September and I like to think giving me lessons in French is some practice time for his teaching skills, especially since teaching someone a new language requires lots of patience.

I want to return the favor soon and start teaching him how to play the piano. We’ve been talking about learning Spanish together through one of those instructional CDs next summer. I think being able to share a learning experience with an SO is a cute way to encourage each other towards a certain goal—you get to watch all the funny mistakes, see how your SO learns best, and cheer each other on—especially when neither person has any prior experience.

Have you and your SO taught each other new hobbies, languages, or skills? Have you made an effort to learn something new together?
