  • Dim the Lights to Turn Me On

The first time I saw my boyfriend's room in his last apartment, I was really excited to see that it had a built-in light dimmer. While I don't really mind if the room is fully lit or pitch-black before getting intimate with him, I love that the lighting in a room can really affect my mood in different ways.

    Pitch-black:
Either being outside during the darkest night hours or having the room pitch-black, absolutely no light leaking in from the hallways or windows, makes me feel playful. Because I can't see too much even after my eyes go through readjustment in the darkness, I have to feel my way around. The only way to go is the one that involves groping. It's fun to have to grope around in the darkness to get your bearings and not see what exactly your SO is doing every second.

    Lit by sunshine:
I typically associate a sunshine-filled room with good-morning sex, sometimes after I spent the night sleep stripping. Opening the curtains to morning sunshine before having sex makes me feel invigorated, like I'm starting the day off right with some "exercise."

    Fully-lit room via lightbulbs:
Whenever a room is fully lit by artificial lighting, I always think of college dorm-room sex in between classes or quickies during times we could get walked in on (family houses, libraries, etc.). I kind of feel like there is a spotlight on me, highlighting every move I make. I'm not into that feeling of voyeurs watching me, but that feeling of being "on edge" is exciting.

    Dimmed room lights:
The first time my boyfriend dimmed the lights in his room, I got turned on almost instantly and wanted to jump his bones. I like being able to watch what's going on, but the light is never enough to make it feel like a spotlight or too little to make it feel like a playful pitch-black adventure. It makes the room feel sensual and romantic.

How do you like your lighting? Is lighting important to you before getting intimate? Does it help set the mood?
