Watching a First Date on the High Line
It was the cutest thing. I felt like I had front row seats to the season premiere of a show. She was adorably nervous, and he was adorably into it. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. It’s funny because I HATE first dates when I am having one, but I LOVE them when I’m prepping my friend for one or simply when you spot a couple while you’re out and about during your day.
But these two were sweet. They were sitting on a park bench overlooking 10th avenue being a little awkward with one another and just talking. She was nervously playing with the rings on her hand, he was making strong eye contact with her along with occasional touches on her knee (nothing dirty, just casual).
It made me think about first dates again and some of my past first dates. I always hated those butterflies right before. The uncomfortable stutters, the awkward silences, the uncontrollable sweatiness resulting from panic when you run out of conversation starters. It’s stressful!
It’s almost like an interview. You’re trying to impress someone in one sitting to the point where they want to see you again, and when you don’t achieve that goal, it’s a bit of a low blow. It really shouldn’t be like that, but sometimes it is, and everything is okay, yet we still stress over it. We forget that all that really matters in the end is being true to yourself. We forget that it's okay when it doesn’t work out, and we forget because nobody wants to be rejected in this world.
But I know first dates can go really well too! Even though there may be some jitters, those jitters come from excitement. That first date could maybe be a huge turning point in your life. It's interesting how one dinner or movie or conversation can literally redirect your life.
Why are first dates one of the most stressful things on this planet? Is there a way to better relax through them other than just remembering to be yourself?

Occasional touches to the person's knee you're seeing is casual? :S
I'm fairly fine on first dates. I get major butterflies in my tummy when asking them out to begin with though. I feel like the tough part is getting that first date, haha. To relax, just take a deep breath and calm yourself. Maybe it's just guys, but I don't think it's too hard on a first date. If she doesn't like me, then okay, we'll just be friends. And I'm a guy that has lots of ideas to do - but it depends on what kind of person you are. I'm an active person, but I don't mind the sitting down for coffee scenario and talking too. :)
I love first dates! I always feel awkward at them, but I think that's part of the fun.
=] i love watching other first dates in action. lol i think i take my to another creepy level. I saw this guy and girl flirting at the gym. you knew they had chemistry and I just smiled to myself (like a creep). But like you mentioned it's fun observing and it's really sweet. Nevertheless, it aint that great when you are in the position of asking the person out/on the first date.
The High Line does seem to be a new popular place for people to go on dates in the city. And it seems to be understandable in terms of stress...it's like a job interview for someone for the rest of your life potentially. Especially when people say you're 1 in 6 billion, I think its logical to assume some stress
@scribbles - Aha! I love watching two strangers interacting with eachother, when they definitely have major chemistry going on!
Geez. First dates aren't that stressful...
They're fun.
It can be a nerve-wrecking thing, but you really have to take the pressure off of it being a first-date. I think it helps to look at it, even if only in your head, as a friendly get-together rather than some big event that could lead to this amazing future. If you look at it that way, you won't be able to relax and have a nice time.
