  • Watching a First Date on the High Line

It was the cutest thing. I felt like I had front row seats to the season premiere of a show. She was adorably nervous, and he was adorably into it. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. It’s funny because I HATE first dates when I am having one, but I LOVE them when I’m prepping my friend for one or simply when you spot a couple while you’re out and about during your day.

But these two were sweet. They were sitting on a park bench overlooking 10th avenue being a little awkward with one another and just talking. She was nervously playing with the rings on her hand, he was making strong eye contact with her along with occasional touches on her knee (nothing dirty, just casual).

It made me think about first dates again and some of my past first dates. I always hated those butterflies right before. The uncomfortable stutters, the awkward silences, the uncontrollable sweatiness resulting from panic when you run out of conversation starters. It’s stressful!

It’s almost like an interview. You’re trying to impress someone in one sitting to the point where they want to see you again, and when you don’t achieve that goal, it’s a bit of a low blow. It really shouldn’t be like that, but sometimes it is, and everything is okay, yet we still stress over it. We forget that all that really matters in the end is being true to yourself. We forget that it's okay when it doesn’t work out, and we forget because nobody wants to be rejected in this world.

But I know first dates can go really well too! Even though there may be some jitters, those jitters come from excitement. That first date could maybe be a huge turning point in your life. It's interesting how one dinner or movie or conversation can literally redirect your life.

Why are first dates one of the most stressful things on this planet? Is there a way to better relax through them other than just remembering to be yourself?

    • About Me: Born and raised in NYC, I am about to be a senior in college, and still feel clueless about exactly what I'm going to do after I graduate. For most of my life, I haven't been involved in anything too serious except for one relationship 2 years ago and one that is progressively getting serious now. Dating can be really exciting or extremely stressful sometimes, I'm excited to try and unblur (just coined a new word) the fine lines between the two here on this site. =)
