  • Reading Those Racy Romance Novels

I am a faithful Amazon Kindle (sorry, Nookies) user and love having access to personalized Amazon-suggested reading lists and thousands and thousands of free books. Something that came up in my "Suggested Reading" list last month was a digital book called Slow Hands by Leslie Kelly.

The digital cover had a woman straddling this guy on a bed with lots of red curtains around them. Weird, I thought, I've never purchased a romance novel from Amazon before. My entire Amazon.com buying history is peppered with pre-1923 Classics that most people would consider too reminiscent of mandatory reading from high school.

I could download Slow Hands with one click and a grand total of $0.00. It was a "Harlequin Blaze" novel with a rating of 4 out of 5 stars from 165 customers. How can I say no to free? Anyway, I had never even read a racy romance novel before. My curiousity led me to click on "Deliver Wirelessly to Your Kindle."

The beginning of the book didn't catch my attention too much--it reminded me of my days being a Sarah Dessen chick-lit junkie in middle school--until the third-person, voyeuristic narrator began to tell me all about Maddy's perky breasts hardening under her shirt or Jake's large member throbbing for warmth or something like that.

    An excerpt:

He was dying to touch her, hold her, suck her.

She whimpered when he slid his hand inside the bra, cupping her, tugging the incredibly soft, warm mound free of its containment. Then he could only look at her, wondering if he'd ever seen a more beautiful woman--with her head thrown back, eyes wild, hair a tangled brown mass. Herr lips were wet, her mouth open, and her full, gorgeous breast was topped by a puckered pink nipple that begged to be touched.

"No sugar handy," he mumbled, "but I know you're sweet enough."

I felt awkward reading the sex scenes, or even those subtler scenes where the main guy's "recently dormant cock became awake in his pants" since I'm used to reading pre-1923 novels where sex is either implied, not even mentioned, or talked about with such an intricate metaphor that it takes a second read through to realize the characters are actually being intimate with one another.

I guess what these romance novels do is to not let the readers' imaginations run wild by just saying "they had sex." It details an experience for the reader that the reader may not have had before. Is this a form of Secondhand Sex? It's a way for readers to live different sex scenarios vicariously through characters in a book.

Do you enjoy reading racy romance novels? Why/why don't you enjoy reading them? Should I give it another try? Any recommendations?

hm i like reading some of these things, super hot. but hard to find a good one.

  • WaitingToShrug@xanga

Eh... if it floats your boat, why not? They are fictional characters. It's not like porn, where you can be relatively sure that at least some of the actors are drugged or being exploited.

  • magicunicorns@xanga

I've never read a romance novel.

Since it's free, you should try it.

  • MzKeekz@xanga

I read the Harlequin ones.  But the way you describe the novel is really funny.

erotica can be fun to read if you're in the right mood. It's easy to be written pretty tackily, though.

  • katethoughts@xanga

    literotica.

ive read some really great stories on theresearch member blueorchid. WOWWWWW
  • Cambios@xanga

I enjoy them. I prefer some amount of anticipation and imagination. If it comes too literal or just damned corny it can be quite uncomfortable. I don't perceive it so much as a peep show and I always seek out stories with emotions and legitimate feelings. If I want mindless sex I've got porn for that. Erotica and romance offer something more.

  • AmeliaHart@xanga

That excerpt sounds a bit "cheesey," for lack of a better word.

  • x_damaged_yet_unbroken_x@xanga

This is an example of white erotica, because it was written by a white female, I'm betting. Try black erotica, like books by Zane or Omar Tyree.......you'll definitely think they're better reads, even if you don't understand all the Ebonics in them or can't pronounce all the names of the characters

Talk Me Down by Victoria Dahl is actually one of my favorites and I definitely recommend it. It has a nice plot line and there's still some nicely written sex scenes.

The beginning of my sexual curiosity led me to my mom's romance novels. I would read those books and see if it felt good to do things like touch my soft, warm mounds (ha). I will always have a soft spot for them.

I actually still read sex stories sometimes. Like in place of watching porn. When my boyfriend's not around and I'm feeling frisky, I don't want to watch some random guy that I wouldn't have sex with because he's not my boyfriend boning some girl that may or may not be faking it. I read the sex stories because they let me imagine what's going on instead of showing me just how sweaty the guy is and just how much makeup the girl has on.

I actually read that same exact book on the kindle for the reason that it was free hahah. And I felt really awkward reading them too. Like I felt that someone was judging me when I read it.

  • Hinase@xanga

I've read some romance novels and boy was it so cheesy. Lol

  • cru3lkindness@xanga

i agree with you, it's totally akward reading one of those racy romance novels. i gave it a try one time & although it gets your mind going about your own sexual fantasy it's just weird to read about it. not to mention most of those books have the oddest wording to describe things.

@x_damaged_yet_unbroken_x@xanga - Thanks for the suggestions!

@JEDIJESSICUH@xanga - Thanks! I'll try to check it out when I can.

@singing2mytune91@xanga - Hmmm I wonder if my mom had any romance novels... haha. I agree, I'm a huge fan of reading and I think there is something in the experience of "imagining" as opposed to just having it laid out for you.

@decodexmexkc@xanga - Free Kindle books ftw! Yeah, I archived it right after I tried to read it x_x

@cru3lkindness@xanga - Yeah, I think the awkward wording really threw off the sensualness of the prose. I want to check out some of the suggestions people have made--maybe I just didn't get lucky with my pick!
