Going to a Wedding Reception Probably Means You Get to Eat Cake

I have never been to a wedding before, but I have watched lots of shows involve wedding cake making competitions. Bakers elaborately make cakes within a time limit, and whoever has the most attractive cake standing will be deemed a winner--so long as the couple at hand wants to purchase your cake.Talk about stress, pressure, and money. Wedding cakes range anywhere from $1.50 to $25 per slice! Buying a cake that will serve 150 guests could cost you well over $1,000 and take weeks to plan and prepare. That is some diligent cake making and you better hope that cake doesn't fall apart on its ride to the reception.
Various cakes I have seen online:

Diamond-studded cake worth 20 million, surrounded by guards and was not allowed to be touched.
$13 per slice
$20 per slice
$22 per slice
$16 per slice
$8.50 per slice
$22 per sliceNot sure how much this one cost but wow...:

How much are you willing to spend/did you spend on a wedding cake? And if you're a wedding cake maker--kudos to you! Tell us about the process!

Our wedding cake was three tiers with piping that was colored and designed to mimic our invitations. It was understated and exactly what I wanted. In fact, the baker liked my design so much that she put it in her book of ideas and has had several people request it. It cost us under $300, which is pretty amazing for a wedding cake, and it was delicious, too.

I've seen a wedding cake where the entire cake was made of sashimi and used rice for the body. It looked awesome:

There is also this Super Mario cake that is just so awesome that I wouldn't want to eat it:

@akatiegirl - Wow you got a great deal!
@laytexduckie@xanga - Omg I LOVE these. Thanks for sharing!
Keep your diamonds, I'll take that crunchy chocolate stuff in carnival ice cream cakes. Mmmm
And this is why I have an artistic sister and a soon-to-be mother-in-law who bakes. Perfectly cheap.
Joanna's cakes are more creative
I love how fondant can be used to create the most elaborate, awesome looking cake decorations. I've never tried it myself but I totally would! & I haven't gotten married yet but I have a feeling I'm going to have a cake and a bunch of cupcakes because I'm a huge sweets fan. No idea about pricing. Nothing outrageous.
The first one is hideous. I don't get what it's supposed to be.
@CHRiSTiNE_x@xanga - I think it's supposed to mimic a wedding gown with all the draping. But either way, it's ugly and not a great way to spend $20 mil if you've got it for a wedding.
@ohforrealson@xanga - Fondant creates a really clean canvas for the decorations on the cake but I don't find that it's the tastiest cake covering. There are some really talented cake decorators who create beautiful masterpieces with buttercream frosting. You should definitely have a cake AND cupcakes for your wedding, treats are always welcome! How about a candy buffet? Build your own sundae station?
I'm not sure how much our wedding cake cost, but it was definitely not $20 million. (You can't spend more on a cake than the food, hall rental, linens and alcohol, right?) I don't know the amount because the cake was included in the package for the hall/food/drink. We had beach accents for our décor, so the cake was cream colored buttercream with coral and bubbles piped in white and decorated with white chocolate seashells. The last example posted above might not be that impressive if it was just fresh flowers covering a plain tiered cake.
I'm going to get married at the courthouse. I don't even like cake. And I like the idea of saving all the would-be-wedding money for the honeymoon instead.
@babybug329@xanga - I've heard that fondant is overly sweet. Those ideas are really good! I'm drooling at the thought
~
My honey and I both want to get married on the beach when the day comes, so sticking with the whole ocean theme, we might have desserts similar to yours! Your cake sounded like it was spectacular :)
None of those cakes really look worth the price at all. :(
i'll be good with whatever :)
i'm not married yet but when i do, i plan to get a good tasting cake and i wouldn't mind paying a little bit more for it.
@ohforrealson@xanga - I love watching those cake baking shows to see how well they can manipulate fondant. It looks fun!
@Lordv16@xanga - Yummmmmm. My favorite!
@babybug329@xanga - Haha who knows, maybe the couple with that $20 million wedding cake DID spend more on other things! Go hard or go home? The last cake impressed me more because it was so tall, and after watching a lot of cake-fails (falls?!) on TV I would feel SO bad if the last leg of this cake journey to the banquet hall = a toppled over disaster. I also think all of that was edible which is kind of cool, but I personally don't like to eat anything that *looks* TOO real. Your beach-themed cake sounds wonderful!
@thisiswhereItellyoueverything@xanga - That's a really frugal idea. Do you know what you want to do for the honeymoon yet?
@raspbxrrryjam@xanga - Yeah, that's really what I thought when I was putting the post together. It's amazing how much food can cost, especially when you can just inhale your meal (you know what I mean lol) in like ten minutes.
@KnitCardigan@xanga - Haha no preference at all?
@superGchik@xanga - Something else I thought about with cake making was that just because it looks pretty doesn't mean it tastes pretty, so I wonder if that has anything to do with the price. I wouldn't know! :P
because i know how to bake (granted, not make artistic cakes) i don't think i'd want to spend a lot on cake. too bad i can't make my own cake when i get married. i mean i could, but i wouldn't want to spend the night before my wedding baking/making a cake...lol.
@akatiegirl - That's pretty awesome
OP
I really don't know. I haven't gotten that far.
usually those beautiful cakes taste nasty lol. i just want a delicious wedding cake. it can be ugly for all i care, just make it tasty.
Can't remember how much mine cost, but it was pretty normal and understated. The fondant ones are so deceptive. They look so cute, BUT... fondant is disgusting. Get icing, you'll be happier with it.
Wow, those cakes are gorgeous...I really don't care about the price as long as it fits in my budget. I would definitely want a nice looking cake, but that's not the main thing I would worry about at my wedding.
I just went to my friend's wedding last weekend, she made her own little top tier cake, with lots of cupcakes on the lower tiers. She isn't a pro, but they looked professionally done! I thought it was awesome :)
I would probably do a small teired cake for my husband and I , and buy a sheet cake in the same flavor for the guests. IT's much less expensive and everyone still gets cake.
Cakes can get pretty expensive. And honestly, I could care less what it looks like. I just want it to taste good. Some cheaper options are doing a small 2 tiered cake to cut and cupcakes for the guests, or doing a sheetcake for the guests.
@ohforrealson@xanga - Thanks! Anything goes for your big day, do what you want (and can afford). My husband's aunt gave us a mini-dessert (tiny cheesecakes, little tarts, etc) spread for wedding gift. All the guests loved it! We also had Edible Arrangements for centerpieces instead of flower arrangements. The meal included a coffee station: regular and decaf, vanilla coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, tea cookies, marshmallows, etc.
@dangelb - "Go big!" to some extent. I say look for as much bang for what you can afford. The last cake is rather impressive in terms of height. I can see what you mean by cake fails/falls, especially if you've seen the cake decorating challenges on Food Network. (I get so sad when I see the a portion of the cake falls off or the sugar art shatters lol) If you've ever watched the wedding planning shows on Style TV, they sometimes show the bakers setting up the wedding cake, they don't normally transfer most cakes all assembled unless it's very sturdy and not too tall (maybe 4 tiers tops?) and have simple design.
http://www.rossmoorpastries.com/images/gallery/wedding-pic30.jpg This is the design that my cake was, except there were no flowers and the base of the cake was a lighter cream color, and the piped design was white. Short pillars (1 1/2") were used between the tiers, more chocolate seashells. I tried posting the pic of my real cake on a weblog entry but I must be blog-photo-challenged.
@KickDrumHeart - That's super cute! Despite writing this post, I feel like I'd want to do something different that wasn't a cake, like just cupcakes, or maybe cupcake pops. I always feel like a lot of people get self conscious and don't want to eat the entire slice of cake and it's a waste :( but how can you resist a cakecup pop?!
@frOOtlOOP451@xanga - Very good idea!
@rabbitsarecool14@xanga - For some reason this reminded me of a project my class did in 4th grade. We made a GIGANTIC cake of our state. It was awesome. Do any of your friends bake? Maybe you could get a group of your friends to make you a cool shaped cake ;)
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I've never actually tried a cake with fondant (lol I actually don't like sweets that much because it throws my blood sugar awry ;x), but thanks for the advice!
@ShirleyD@xanga - True! I wonder if the bakers feel a little part of them die when their cakes get all cut up and mangled. I mean they get paid, but still, that's a lot of work from the heart!
@Pandiie_Bear@xanga - Agreed. I am always amazed though that some people will invest more in a cake than in their wedding dress or something o_o considering the ones I've seen always range close to $1000.
@dangelb - *Some* people like it, so don't necessarily take my word for it... but do sample it before you decide to use it! I've seen a lot of people actually roll the fondant back when they're cutting the cake, and not even bother serving it.
