  • Can You Say One More Thing for Me?

While I was studying abroad in England, one of my roommates was on the phone with her parents, speaking to them in French. As soon as she hung up, I burst out saying, "I forgot how much I LOVE hearing people speak French! I think it's the sexiest language."

"Really? Why? I think it sounds kind of nasty. It's so guttural."

"I actually really like the pronunciation of the 'r' and the way Nino and Amélie spoke to each other while before they spent the night together in that movie. It made it seem like French was the best language to use in bed. And I remember crushing on someone really hard whose parents were from France, and every time he started to talk I melted a little inside... he always used to say, 'vous êtes comme une fleur fragile' to me..."

Before I realized what that guy was actually saying--"you are like a fragile flower"--thanks to Google Translate, hearing the way "fleur" rolled out of his mouth, his lips parting so slightly with gentle breath strangely turned me on. Quickly, too. Maybe it was my association of flowers and romantic moments, or maybe it was just because his French was so smooth and eloquent and foreign... but it would just make me imagine what it would be like if he spoke French to me all the time. He could have totally French-ed his way to the forefront of my affection.

As someone who grew up only speaking American English, I was fascinated anytime I heard someone else speaking another language, or if they were speaking with an accent other than one from an American-based dialect (linguistic anthropology really pointed out hundreds of regional differences in dialects within America for me). I usually paid close attention to their articulation, the different positions their lips worked into to make unfamiliar sound blends. The differences in pacing and breathing. I imagined how their words looked as they spoke, placing periods and commas wherever it sounded fit, eagerly awaiting the next string of spoken phrases.

Other languages and accents other than my own always fascinate me, and maybe because I feel so far removed from them, the mystery of this difference is alluring. Mysterious. "Say one more thing for me," I always want to say. "I just want to listen to you all day." Somehow a foreign language or an accent makes a hot man even more attractive to me.

I was someone who sometimes read British fiction to myself, giving characters their own voices with renditions of my best British accent (it works out well in my head, of course, not so much out loud), and while I was in England hearing the British accent in action all the time made these British fiction novels really come to life for me. The most obvious character that comes to mind is Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice--incredibly charming by the end of the novel:

You must know... surely, you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I'd scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.

Hearing someone say this with a British accent in person... yum.

Do accents other than your own turn you on? Which ones? What do you think is the sexiest language?

I live in NY and just love the sound of a southern accent. Mmm and the spanish language turns me on.

I love accents :) My dad is from Mexico and has an accent, my boyfriend is from Mexico and has an accent *go figure*, and I loveee talking to people with un-american accents  :D

I think Australian accents are sexy! There was this Asian guy from Australia that I used to talk to on Skype and I melted at nearly everything he said.

I also like the sound of Japanese, as I've been hearing and studying it for about 10 years. Right now I work at an elementary school in Japan, and there's this male teacher around my age who sounds so adorable when he speaks what little English he knows ^__^

too bad my native language sounds a bit too harsh and blunt when spoken. I think spanish is sexy too! accents are adorable :)

If a woman spoke to me in Gaelic or Irish, I'd have to deeply consider marrying her on the spot. I might do the same for Icelandic, too. I used to have a thing for Italian, but that's given way to Germanic- and Celtic-family languages. No one'll ever speak it to me, but I'd go ga-ga for anyone talking in Middle or Old English. Admittedly, a verse or two of Chaucer is some of the kindest speech to my ears, and I certainly can't say no to "The Ruin" or some OE riddles.

In terms of just accents, though, I'm fond of my Midwestern American (suburban Midwest, really - not the Northern Cities accent) and most Scandinavian or German accents.

I LOVEEEE men with irish and scottish accents I have also found that I tent to like guys with a lot of celtic heritiage... perhaps it is because a lot of irish and scottish heritiage people live where I live in Maryland... but I just think that accent is so sexy with a mans voice.

I also find men who are part hispanic attractive.... but of course rarely ever full hispanic because they tend to be short.

I guess my dream guy would be half irish half hispanic lmao. But my boyfriend is irish and itialian which kinda gives the same effect lol. Although, he has an american accent.

I love how takeshi kaneshiro speaks japanese with his sexy voice. jude law I have to be attracted to the guy's voice in general to be attracted to his accent if he has one. some guys' voices just don't do it for even if they have an accent that I would normally find appealing. non-accent guys with hot voices-jensen ackles

I am fond of a British accent. I also like the New York accent, lol.

I don't think accents do much for me. Its rather the tone of the voice that does wonders for me.

I really need to go to America at some point... Women with accents are *FIT*

Great article, but I just don't get why people rave about "British english", or maybe it's just me... as I am British, so kinda rules myself out as I'm probably used to it! But I have to agree, languages can be a very major turn on.

To answer your question, hands down... french has to be the sexiest language spoken in my opinion.

@aphelps28@xanga - Speaking of this, I knew a boy who was half hispanic and half irish and he was SO sexy. Omg. I totally understand, hahaha. I love mixes :)

@thatsnotarealword@xanga - Hahaha I'm an English major and I heard this AWESOME "authentic" reading of The Canterbury Tales and I was like <33333333 too bad I don't have the patience to learn it for myself.

@Mysteriousblogger - I think I possibly rave and LOVE the British accent because of all the Brit Lit I had to read in school, and we'd always watch the movies to accompany them or listen to recordings OR have my teacher read them in a great accent and I always thought it was so dreamy, possibly because it was mostly Jane Austen and what else did she really write about besides marriage and such? Haha. And then I went to study abroad in England and I was seriously in heaven. Although I have to say--my program was based in Sussex in a super small country town, and I felt like the accent there was a lot heavier/harder to understand than what I heard in London. Sexy nonetheless! Any thoughts?

@dangelb - You should try it! Reciting Chaucer in Middle English is totally worth it. We had to memorize and recite some lines for a semester on Chaucer, and it was a really fun language to learn.

@thatsnotarealword@xanga - Haha yeah? I have yet to tackle that time period at my university but I'll be on the look out for a class that will help with that!

  • Mysteriousblogger

@dangelb - I guess English english has always been a touch on the romantic side, as it had been used by Shakespeare and by Jane Austen. As you mentioned, each area will have a different type of accent I guess. London is more general I think, whilst if you go to places like Yorkshire or Staffordshire, then there can be major differences in accents and pronounciation of words.
