Women and Tattoos

Why do women get tattoos? This is a question I've been asking myself for a while. We all know why men get tattoos - they want to look badass. It's common to see big buff guys showing off their tattoos while pumping iron in the gym, indicating that they're forces not to be reckoned with.
But for women, it doesn't make much sense (unless of course they're manly women who want to look intimidating as well). Nowadays, tattoos have become a mainstream fad for women. Some only get small tattoos on the wrist or the like. Others feel the need to cover their entire backs. It's not like getting a tattoo is cheap either; I've heard of people paying up to $2,000. Let's not forget the potential consequences tattoos give people, the biggest one being the possibility of having to get them lasered off later in life.
I'm sure there are various answers to this question. Several things come to my mind. I'm sure peer pressure plays a big role; women like to act collectively and do whatever their friends are doing in order to feel complete. I think low self-esteem/insecurity also plays a major role. Women who are not happy with themselves feel the need to get tattoos in order to feel better. I'll go out on a limb here and say a third reason could be that women enjoy just the experience of having the needles pinned into their skin. It gives them a tantalizing feeling somehow.
If you have gotten a tattoo, what was your reason for getting one?

Are you fucking kidding me? I don't even know what to say right now because I'm so angry. I'm angry at you for writing this and I'm angry at Datingish for allowing it to be posted because it is full of ignorance. Now I'm going to walk away before I unleash some very harsh words.
This is stupid.
You over looked appreciation for art itself. I, as a woman, and artist, am offended.
It's nice that Dating posts things submitted by the mentally retarded so they can feel special... but really?
How brain damaged do you have to be to think the main motivations for tattoos are to be a badass, peer pressure, and low self-esteem?@TheInappropriateSkirt@xanga - I totally agree with you.

@TheInappropriateSkirt@xanga - Well, although it may be a tad narrow minded, it definitely does represent some possible reasons for tattoos.
However, I don't see how this is even remotely related to dating...
I cant even believe this...the person who posted this is beyond pathetic.
Literally every word of this post is wrought with stupidity and ignorance.
This was a horribly written article. You know just about nothing about tattoo culture. : /
@Day923@xanga - There's a fine line between art and doing damage to your skin.
LOL.Wow.
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Women get piercings. Please explain the difference.
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Also, what? Who are you to define art?
<
Has tattoos. Definitely NOT manly.
That's kind of an ignorant thing to say. Its art. With skin as its canvas. I didn't get them for attention or to feel completely because not many people know about them. They're completely hidden by clothing because they mean something to me and they're only for me.
@Day923@xanga - There is no difference. I dislike piercings as well.
So I ask a simple innocent and legit question hoping to get feedback, and everyone here acts like I just shot their mothers. I think some people need to take a break from Xanga...
Or, and here's a radical thought, maybe some women simply like getting tattoos. Naw, people doing what they like to do is too foreign of a concept.
@Rob_of_the_Sky@xanga - Well no shit. But why?
1) I see tattoos as sort of a scrapbook; every one tells a story, and every one is unique in its own way. It's kind of like a photo. Two photos are never the same. They're taken at different times, and different places, and different angles. Even if two people got the exact same tattoo, in the exact same place on their bodies, at the exact same time, they each hold a different meaning to the person in question.
2) It's called body art for a reason. Some people, like myself, are artistic beings who love anything that has to do with designs, shapes, and colors. Tattoos are (mostly) aesthetically pleasing to look at.
3) Personally, I like the feeling of getting a tattoo. Perhaps I am somewhat masochistic, but I dunno... I just like knowing that I'm bucking up and enduring pain. Not everyone can do that, you know? It's one of those things that you just have to experience to understand, kind of like piercings, self-harm, breaking a bone, childbirth, etc. I wouldn't even say that they've become a "fad." They've just become more socially acceptable.
If you don't like tattoos, then don't associate with people who have them. Don't put yourself around them. Honestly, though, you're going to find it difficult. Not a day goes by where I don't see someone with at least one tattoo. Also, what people do to their bodies is really none of your business. I suggest you open your mind a little bit.
Totally off-topic... But I love the picture for this article. You could make a pretty rockin' sex game out of that many tattoos. I can think of three off the top of my head, and that's in less than a minute. XD
Maybe women get tattoos because they're interesting and attractive? I'm interested and attracted, and I can't even see her face. I really want the stories behind all of those intermixing tattoos! They're almost perfectly seamless, so I wonder if she planned them out together? Or has just been adding over the years?
I unfortunately do not have any tattoos. I am regret-phobic.
Lol. This is bad on so many levels. First that you post something this ignorant and expect people not to be a little upset is hysterical. Second, how could you not have a least a little better understanding of why people get tattoos, especially in today's world? A pretty large portion of my friends are covered in tats, most men mind, but none of them got them to be thought of as 'badass.' Actually, with some of their tattoos in mind, just thinking that is lulz-inducing.
A tattoo is just another means of self-expression. Women are allowed to do that from time to time, too ...you know, when it's not time to cook you some dinner or something.
@not_your_concern@xanga - No one ever considers the long-term effects of tattoos. You have them for life. Ever see old people with tattoos and notice how you can't make them out because they look like these ugly blobs?
To the guillotine you go!!!! ASAP.
I decided I wanted one when I was a little girl. I think it was the Crow movie and the girls wings were amazing to me.
But none of the reasons you stated above are reasons why I got mine. Also I doubt that is why all guys get them.
Lol your ignorance is hilarious.
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Everyone who gets a tattoo considers it; they aren't morons, and it is no surprise a tattoo is permanent. They simply don't care. As it is their body, they are allowed to do this. The personal benefits/positives of having it obviously outweigh the potential for negatives down the road for them.
@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Lol what? Of course they consider the long-term effects. Sure, some people don't, but those people generally don't care. I know I don't give a shit. When I'm old and saggy, will it really matter anymore? At least I'll have lived a little bit. And hey, everyone around me will have gross, saggy tattoos too! We'll start a club called the Barely Discernible Body Art Organization.
If I'm getting highly negative responses to this post, I can't imagine what kind of responses I would have gotten had I written an article on why I think women with short hair are ugly.
Check back next week!
