  • Country Songs and Cheating

Perhaps I'm just ignorant, but why does it seem like the most prominent topic in country music, other than anything involving Christianity and whatnot, is cheating? The list seems to go down to love, heartbreak, cheating, America, and Christianity. I'm not trying to stereotype here, this is just what I noticed amongst "mainstream" country songs.

In a fit of boredom, I decided to look up TheBoot.com. The current feature shows the top 10 girl fight songs, which judging by the real subject matters of the songs, are basically about cheating and dealing with the other mistress. What follows after the list? The real list of top 10 cheating songs. What follows after that? A list of break-up songs, five of which have to do with (you guessed it) cheating!

Maybe it's just me, but what is it with country songs and cheating? I want to know about one that is just about falling out or something that involves something out of their control. I don't know. Something less formulaic. I don't get it. 'Till I figure this out, I'm going to make a little note to self: Never, in my life, date a country singer. If by chance I do, I'll ask her this question myself.

I wouldn't have to be patronizing had there been more variety in those lists.

Notice any trends? What's your take on good old country music?

I like some country music....my favorite country band is Rascal Flatts :) Uhm...most music in general is about love, broken hearts, cheating, ect ect...

Yeah, I wouldn't just put country music in this category but rather all music.

Most pop music is about sex; wanting it, getting it, having it, losing it, stealing it etc. Country, because it's supposedly more um..."family" oriented has fewer songs about having it, so they make up the difference with cheatin' songs, on account of divorce aint right, so you gotta sneak round and well,. ya know how it goes. And that leads to songs about drinkin and prison.

its all music in this category of cheating, break ups, love, etc.

Perhaps you do not listen to country music. That is just about the only thing I listen to and the first ten songs I can think of off the top of my head arnt about cheating nor the first 20. Maybe you are listening to the wrong songs/artists or those are the only ones you remember. Country music just sings about life. "A good country song takes a page out of somebody's life and puts it to music." -- Conway Twitty " =)

I just grabbed my most recent Rascal Flatts CD & the #2 song on the CD is called, "Easy."  (feat. Natasha Bedingfield). It's just about a break-up with no cheating & they still love each other basically.  There, now you can satisfy my dream of dating a country singer.  Here's the lyrics:

    Verse 1:
We broke up, yeah it's tough, most guys would've been crushed
Wastin' their time wonderin' where they went wrong
No way, not me hey I'm doin' just fine
I'm not afraid of movin' on, it's

    Chorus:
    Easy...goin' out on Friday nights
Easy...every time I see her out
I can smile, live it up the way a single guy does
But what she, what she don't know
Is how hard it is to make it look so
    Easy

    Verse 2:
The truth is I miss lyin' in those arms of his
But I don't ever let it show
I laugh and I act like I'm havin' the time of my life
As far as he knows, it's

    Chorus

Oh it's easy...goin' out on a Friday night
Oh it's easy...every time I see him out
    I can smile
    Live it up
Forget about the way it was
    But what she
Oh but what he don't know
    What she don't know
Is how hard it is to make it look so...easy
    Looks so easy

Lots of songs are about cheating and heartbreak... and love.. and, heck all of that.

People write songs about topics they have strong feelings about.  Being cheated on, falling in/out of love, a feeling of patriotism or incredible faith will bring out some the strongest and most empowering feelings.Like blogs, people write when they are emotionally impacted by something.  There are lots of people writing about love, loss, and faith and the entries that get the most responses tend to be about things within these topics because people pour their heart out.  Movies are about love, heartbreak, cheating, faith, patriotism... television series constantly portray these aspects of life.. why?  Because we can all relate.  Pain, love, feeling strongly in any way, we laugh, we cry and we feel with the characters.. and that's what music strives to do.  To make you feel that the song is about you and what you're going though.
Dr. Dre, Shaggy, Alanis Morrissette, Justin Timberlake... they all sing songs about cheating/being cheated on.  Then you have millions more songs about love and faith and all that good stuff.  Mostly, this is very close-minded to make claims that country music is all about cheating.. unlike angry rappers blabbing about their scandals and prideful infidelity, in country music, you can actually understand the words and lyrics the first time you hear it.  Besides, the guys a lot of time are singing about being cheated ON and how it hurts, but they'll do something to make it all right.  ;)
Thanks for the post though, this was interesting to read.

You really only think that if you don't listen to country music very often.

Cheating, love, heartbreak, etc- these are popular themes in all kinds of music. I will always pick country over rap or hip hop, at least they attempt to tell a story and use instruments.

My personal favorite genre is blues/rock.

@Lindsey_e@xanga - Very well put! I'd like to add that if one goes 'way back to the beginnings, country music has encompassed the history of our country. I once heard Eddy Arnold say, "I like a pretty song" and there are a huge number of classics in country; more than a few have crossed over to other genres. For dancing, a good "3-chord country song" will inspire people to move their feet in a pattern instead of just shifting from one foot to the other. Hit some of the night spots in the Austin, TX area as I did a couple of years ago and you will be amazed by the popularity of all the good, local talent. They still have a few old-time dance halls down there!

ha ha ha... this is so true...I want to say
here that and maybe, just maybe, this topic is on the top, because the consequence
of cheating is a tremendous pain like losing sleep and losing appetite and lots
    of thinking so emotional turmoil
