Candie's New Sex PSA Features Bristol Palin and... The Situation?
How do you feel about a former governor's daughter and a reality TV show star talking about sex?
The mission of the Candie's Foundation is to reach out to young women and change their perception about teen pregnancy and motherhood. They use celebrities they feel the youth can relate to (past spokeswomen have included Hillary Duff, Brittany Spears, and Fergie) and their campaigns often appear in teen mags.
Sure, this PSA is pretty corny and I don't think it will convince anyone to wear a condom or say no to a good old fashioned romp, but I do think this is one of the better campaigns the Candie's foundation has come up with.
I also think it's refreshing that this PSA features a man (usually Candie's focuses exclusively on the ladies) because it's nice that someone with a penis is talking about safe sex-- it does takes to to tango, after all. It's also helpful that this video isn't just another lame scare tactic and is more like a discussion, talking about the reasons behind their choices and not just pointing toward abstinence.
Do you know what I would really love? A LESBIAN PSA. How ground breaking would that be? Acknowledging that people of different sexualities have sex and practice safe sex? Awesome. It shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm pretty sure lesbians have been ignored in this type of thing.
But back to the current PSA. Sure, the acting is shoddy, the dialogue is hollow, and the whole thing is just weird, but, hey, it could be much worse!
And, really, I give kudos to The Situation. Sure, I want to bang my head against something hard (not his abs) when he speaks, but he seems a lot more at ease and natural than Bristol.
Bristol-- Sarah Palin's daughter and teen mom, for those of who live under a rock-- has already made an abstinence PSA with Candie's, which you can view below.
What do you guys think of the new PSA? Are there any sex campaigns out there you really like or dislike?

Lesbian? What about the gay people, or the people who have sex with animals. Don't forget about them.
That first video was annoying. The second one was way better.
@Alyxandri@xanga - really? i was so annoyed when the second one came out. it just felt patronizing and like the scare tactics DARE puts out. on the whole, really, i think candie's is a joke
I get what Candies is trying to do but the other ads with celebs were way better. The new one is silly & I dont like how Bristol is basically calling her child a situation. The second one says she's lucky because of her affluent family that she can do all she does & not worry about childcare.
There are thousands, if not more, teen moms making it far & doing what they have to do for themselves & their kids with less & not getting a round of applause that they do deserve. It's not right to put Bristol on a pillar, though I honestly think her mom is mostly behind it. Bristol said in an interview how "hard it is to be a working single mom", yet she does (over)paid appearances, DWTS, taped a tv show & gives magazine interviews. Where is her job?
@TheCatInTheCradle@xanga - well, a lot of single teen moms do face poverty so I felt like that was a relevant issue.
But you're right about the scare tactics. Instead, they should hit harder on the specifics of safe sex (like where kids should go to get condoms, what methods of birth control are affective, etc.). But I don't know enough about the organization to really say.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - i agree, they have a good cause but they really go about it the wrong way.
in defense of palin, i have read she does live on her own at works as a receptionist or something. but she is so much better off that other teen moms. and i do feel like the way she speaks on her pregnancy and her child is from a pillar.
Just as a slight correction, Sarah Palin is no longer the governor of Alaska, she resigned quite a while ago.
First, that the hell is she wearing in the first video? She's trying to portray herself as a normal teen mom, but she obviously had "oppertunities" that other teen mom's don't, which she stated in her second video. She looks incredibly stiff and scripted in her first video. All in all it's a good idea, but why don't they take it to the streets and find REAL teen moms who are working their asses off to support themselves, not ones who are going out of their way to publicize themselves due to their mother's political standing.
@TheCatInTheCradle@xanga - I read that interview too but she's in the media so much, I wonder when she has time to work that job, especially since DWTS is in California. Then in one interview she said abstinence only education doesnt work but now she's advocating it? She's flip flopping alot.
I say teach both & let people decide what they want to do. KIND OF like the new ad is trying to do but without the corny crap. LOL. I do agree it's cool to see a dude in a safe sex commercial but the constant dropping of the word "situation" killed it.
@ixeatxrainbows@xanga - Amen! Your comment said it exactly right.
@ixeatxrainbows@xanga - right, but often people refer to politicians after they have left office as their former title (like president clinton), but i changed it for clarity sake.
the first video is on the set on dancing with the stars, which is why she is dressed that way.
the first one seriously?! I took that as a joke. I'm sure I could have a made a drinking game out of how many times he said the word "situation".
The second one is much better.
The first one was kind of stupid, but it's definitely interesting to see the take on abstinence and using condoms. It's usually one or the other in most PSA's.
@TheCatInTheCradle@xanga - Haha yeah, I understand that. I just diiiiid not agree with her as our governer, and didn't want people to be confused :)
That makes sense! I was so confused, haha.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - Thanks! And I agree, situation was way overused, and went from adding slight comic to the script to making it impossible to take seriously.
I agree that the second one is better. I get what you're saying about not using scare tactics, but the point she's making is actually a really good one that girls don't think about (I know I didn't at that age)-- you might not have any support, and your whole lifestyle will change. It's a much less glamorous perspective than what shows like Teen Mom can often portray. (Apparently Farrah is now moving to LA to pursue her acting career... surprise, surprise, in the "best interest of her child." right.)
Also, I get what people are saying about the whole get real teen moms things, but frankly, celebrities always get people's attention more. Are you more likely to change the channel if it's the girl from dancing with the stars or the former VP nominee's daughter talking, or just some random girl? If it gets a teenager to stop and listen for a second, then that's the idea of a PSA.
And lastly, although I'm not a fan of the Palins politically, I respect what Bristol has tried to do with her unfortunate fame for her mistakes (PSA-wise... going on DWTS was a stretch.) Frankly, if she had done nothing and never spoken of it, people would be saying she's not using her notoriety for good. Ultimately, being in the spotlight her mother is in and the press her pregnancy got, she has no choice but to try to send girls a positive message and caution them not to make the same mistakes she did. (I'm not calling her baby a mistake, so don't have a cow readers.)
I dislike the second one because it kind of shows Bristol's easy way out.
However, I like the first one. It's kind of funny (despite the whole "situation" redundancy going on) and it offers two opportunities to be safe in a way that's doesn't seem as pushy as the second one (at least to me).
My biggest issue with it though is that Bristol seems to be associating herself with safe sex but then pushing abstinence. It makes me wonder what she really wants and how much of what she says has to do with trying to live under her mother's guidelines.
This first one was incredibly awkward and somewhat annoying.
The Situation was a horrible choice because he is a man slut. and if I heard the word "situation" one more time, I would have thrown my macbook.
Bristol wasn't a bad choice for the commercial because of what she's been through, but the situation? come on...
I think the first one is more um... effective. I think it's hilarious ("I totally support abstinence, I mean, it has the word 'abs' in it...") and the second one is more of a scare tactic that younger people tend to write off. I think people can relate better to something that makes them laugh rather than something that is meant to reprimand and scare them.
