I'm Allergic to My Boyfriend's Dogs...
Ever since I can remember, I have ALWAYS been a dog person. As a child, if I went over to someone's house, I would find myself just fascinated by their dogs. There is something about their undying love and loyalty that makes me smile.
I have a Shetland Sheepdog and she is one of my best friends in the whole world. I know it sounds corny, but don't roll your eyes at me.
Now, my boyfriend of almost two years has two of the most ADORABLE puggles at his house. They are so lovable and friendly and are always begging for your attention.
The problem?
I think I'm now allergic to dogs.
It all started two months ago. I went over to his house while we were home from college, and played with the puggles as usual. Then, I started itching my arm, and started breaking out in hives.
At this point, I didn't make the connection. I took some allergy medicine and a quick shower and they went away.
Then, I realized it started happening everytime I went to his house. One day I had pet the dogs, and then must have touched my face because within minutes hives sprouted up all over my cheeks and forehead. It wasn't pretty.
I tried to see if I had the same reaction with my dog at home. I had pet her, but the worst I got was just 3 hives on my forearm. Not a big deal.
What's the problem here?
I asked my boyfriend if the puggles changed soaps or flea medicine or anything, but nothing had changed.
So, until it's confirmed by a doctor, I am now going under the assumption that I have become somewhat allergic to dogs. Friggen great.
The real problem is....what do I do? I can't stop going to his house, but I hate breaking out in hives everytime I go. Plus, I love those damn puggles.
What do you guys think I should do? Is there anyone out there who has dealt with the same problem?

I would try to get it confirmed by a doctor as soon as possible before exposing yourself again. It would be better to know for sure that you're allergic to the dogs. But why would you only be allergic to his dogs, or even highly allergic to them without hardly a reaction to other dogs? Doesn't make sense to me.
Maybe allergy shots would help?
if allergy medicine made the hives go away, just take some before you go over?
animal allergies do differ around breeds, i have more severe reactions to some cats than others, so thats probably why your dog doesn't affect you as muchxx
The thing is, generally its the dogs' dander that cause allergic reactions, and it differs by breed. Some make more dander than others, which can determine the intensity of allergic reactions. That would explain why you're more affected by one kind of dog than others. In the meantime, stock up on the strongest allergy medicine you can get without a prescription, and if you know you'll be going over to his house, take it before you go. It should help. Hopefully.
But I'd get to the doctor asap. Just to be sure.

Man that sucks. You could wear a full on body suit, hah hah. I wonder if zyrtec helps you? I take that daily in the spring, but have also used it for skin rashes. It is expensive, but you might consider taking it daily.
I'm allergic to my man's pup. Pop some Benadryl =]
Allergy shots, and they make shampoos for dogs (both dry and wet) that cut down on dander and allergens.
I have mild allergic reactions to some dogs - their saliva and fur makes me itchy and gives me mild hives. Really, just wash your hands up to your elbows after interacting with them - if you're still fine with most dogs, that should take care of a lot of it. I've had plenty of dogs, one of which I had this sort of reaction with, and it's very, very manageable. But definitely see your doctor just in case, and look into allergen/dander shampoos.
i have the same problem, though not to that extent. i usually try to avoid the dog as much as i can, without being rude to the guy, then shower carefully when i get home. i am sure to avoid touching my face, rubbing my eyes, etc. until after i get the shower.
ditto with the ladies...unless your boyfriend is willing to shave his dogs for you
@akatiegirl - agreed
The best thing to do is go to a doctor and get it tested out. I got tested for something I was allergic to that made me break out in a rash..though the doctor said I had a food allergy..but to what? I don't know.
i had the exact same thing with my bf's cat. i was terribly allergic to her. everytime i go over to my bf's my face just turns red and it'd itch .. A LOT. i'd avoid touching/itching my face everytime i was over at his place. i've searched online for allergy creams, shots and medication and i know there are allergy medicine that you can buy over the counter.
lucky for me, for some odd reason though, after my bf moved to a more spacious place, i realised that my allergies got less worse. i think somehow my body got used to the cat (hooray for strong immune system!) and my allergies eventually went away! now i can pet her and carry her without being itchy.
