  • Singing the Blues: Fighting Over the Radio

Music is a huge part of my life. I listen to soothing tunes while I'm working, motivational high paced ones when I'm at the gym, hot beats when I want to dance, you get the point.

One place where I think almost EVERYONE can agree they listen to music is in the car. There's something about driving and singing my favorite song really obnoxiously and loudly that makes me very happy.

When you're alone in the car, you can dance and sing to any tune you want to without interruption.

But what happens when you're driving with your SO?

As I drive with my boyfriend, I find myself not singing as loudly and we're constantly fighting over the radio stations.

We share some similar musical tastes, but sometimes we couldn't be more different. If he's driving he's constantly fiddling with the stations, out of habit, and manages to change them every 10 seconds without even noticing.

I normally follow the rule of "the driver of the car has the last say over the radio station," but when he changes stations in my car, it makes me fight for stations in HIS car.

Sometimes we both agree on a certain song or station, but after a few minutes we are right back to where we started.

We are still trying to work on a compromise so we can drive in harmony.

    Ha. Musical humor.

How about you guys? How do you deal with the radio with your SO? Do you have similar musical tastes?

We have similar tastes, but definitely have some differences. If I'm driving, I get control, or veto power, ha.

Of course, on longer drives, I'll relinquish control for a bit. But my car, my music, if you don't like it you can walk! ;)

Weird, this has never happened to me. Fighting over music in a car seems really really silly..

If I'm driving (which was usual since he didn't have a car when he was living out here) I usually just let him pick the music. It wasn't a big deal. We usually had similar music taste or I was more susceptible to liking his music then to him liking mine. He thinks he's all musical genius because he's a musician. I just let him have his fun. :p

He listens to NPR.  I try to be okay with it but it makes me want to bash my head through the window :X

We have similar tastes in music anyhow. So he doesn't mind. He isn't going to be 3 and fight over the radio with me/ipod etc; It's too silly.

sometimes i'd rather not listen to anything.

I solve this problem with the magic of shuffle as the radio doesn't play enough of the music I like.  In addition, my car, my music; your car, your music - no exceptions or complaining UNLESS there is a specific situation going on such as illness or a special occasion.  I haven't run into many instances where this arrangement doesn't work since most people I hang around have similar musical taste to mine.

Sometimes we drive in silence, but my bf has quite an amount of CDs in his car, we share the same taste in music x]

Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Western (by that, I don't mean country..), Classical.

And that is why I hook up my Ipod

this reminds me of when my ex and i drove down to virginia beach.  of course we were driving in my car and i had my ipod all set up and ready to play in the car while i was driving.  the minute he got into my car, he disconnected the ipod and turned to some really ghetto music that i have never even heard of.  i had to drive listening to that music the whole 8 hours.  so the next time we were in the car driving long distance again, we just turned on the radio to whatever station we could find and we just talked instead of listening to music.

I generally just turn it down, and find something to talk about with him, because he fiddles with it too, and I can't stand it.

I told one of my interests that I hated when people would put my music down over and over again, and try to change the song all the time, and the volume. He continued to do it even though he said he would listen to me. So that is one tiny tiny reason I had the part ways with him.

If it is your car people should not try to change shit all of the time. It's annoying and you do not want to annoy the driver.

  • notorious_graphics@xanga

We fight all the time. We do have some of the same taste, but I listen to a wider variety. He tries to change my songs all the time, so i smack his hand away, and tell him that if he touches it I'll break his fingers. (we're joking, obviously) It always starts out as him just trying to annoy me, but it does get annoying sometimes.
