Some guys Facebook chat me whenever we're online, but then never text me. I don't get it. To me, these two ways of getting ahold of me are essentially the same thing--back and forth conversations without the awkward lulls of phone calls. Is Facebook chatting the easy way out, the better alternative, the more convenient form of communication?
Is the guy just chatting me just because I'm online and he's bored or does he truly want to talk to me? If he asks what my plans for the night are, why didn't he just text me? Maybe I'm overreacting but I think sending a text is more genuine than sending a chat on Facebook.
And then there's all of the technology malfunctions associated with chat. What happens if you're having a great flirtatious conversation with your crush then all of a sudden it stops working? You could send him a text, but then why didn't he just send you one in the first place? It makes me think that the guy is trying to keep me a secret. By chatting me instead of texting me, he prevents the possibility of someone looking through his phone and reading our conversation. But what does he have to hide?
So tell me Lovelies, what's better--Facebook chatting or texting?

Texting is much more personal. Facebook chatting seems like a cop out.
Wow. That was a pile of paranoid over analyzing.
@mcmeister89@mancouch - yes, that was my thought exactly.
I don't think I have ever actually thought this through. I tend to text people when I'm bored-girls included. If I were you, I'd be more happy that he picked your name specifically to facebook-chatup.
texting, hands down. way more personal
@mcmeister89@mancouch - For real.
How about, it's easier to type when you have all the letters laid out in front of you?
Oh, & picking up the phone call & CALLING seems like it would mean more. Just saying.
I never compared the two before. I am NEVER on fb chat. Ever. If someone wants to contact me, either text me or use AIM to IM me. Screw fb chat.
Texting.
The less energy someone uses to contact you, the less thought they've given to contacting you. It's as simple as that. No need to overanalyze here: if he wanted to talk to you, he'd go out of his way.
You are way, way overthinking it. From my experience, fb chatting and texting are equal in that they mean basically nothing.
It's a matter of convenience to them, I've actually never thought of it this way 'cause some people I have on fb don't have my # so they can't sms me to begin with and I turned off that feature 'cause I don't want fb to lag.
Don't bee too paranoid love. They are basically the same thing.
I think you're overreacting. I use both, but both tend to malfunction a lot. Sometimes, she gets mad at me when I haven't responded for an hour because I haven't gotten her last text and I thought she was busy doing something.
I don't think you should put much into whether he fb or texted you first. Sometimes, you gotta be glad the person actually picks you to chat with. Personally, I prefer texting simply because I don't have to be sitting in front of a computer all day. So far, the facebook app for android does only so much, so I'd rather text. Moreover, don't overthink things too much. I have texted or facebook chatted with girls just to talk to them. If you're interested in the guy, may be you should make it clearer instead of waiting around.
love, peace, and chicken grease!
I like texting because I don't have to be on Facebook to do it. ;D
texting. especially since I never show that I'm online on facebook.
@mcmeister89@mancouch - ahahahah i agree
i prefer texting. i just switch facebook chat off. it's annoying and always malfunctions when i use it. i just text or use aim.
He's online, you're online, why don't you two just chat on the computer? It's easier and more convenient than taking out your phone and sending someone a text when you can just Fb chat with em. It makes sense, right?
If you two had a great conversation on Fb Chat and some malfunction happen to happen, why don't you send him a text to see what's up? I don't get it why the guy have to do everything first.
To me, both are really coward-like. I like to get up face-to-face or at least call because I'm personal like that.
@xXDC_luyouXx - Unfortunately, sometimes the girl you like is living two hours away for the summer and you can't just jump in the car and make a trip every time you want to say hi. I know what you're saying man, but there are obvious practical reasons for FB chat and text messages.
I would rather FB chat than text on my cell. I will get charged for sending and receiving texts, and I only use my phone for calling anyways. I tried texting to friends a few times though I quickly got annoyed. At least when I'm online I can go to other websites at the same time while chatting.
FB chat is kinda buggy.
@laytexduckie@xanga - Agreed
They're the same to me.. they're both lame. If someone is interested in me, I'd prefer them call me. That way I can talk to them without a thousand other people getting in the mix. A five minute phone call wouldn't hurt anyone.
But I consider both texting and facebook to be the same. Your facebook chat could mess up, your texting could mess up. Just like your instant message could mess up.
Sigh.
If it's just some random guy or someone I have a crush on, I wouldn't give a shit which way they contacted me.
I use Facebook chat when I'm either bored or catching up with friends. My best friends live about 2 hours away from me, so I don't always see them as often as I'd like. They also work during the day and can't be on the phone for extended periods of time, so we use Facebook chat to catch up during the day. We do also text fairly often, but it's a little harder to have an in depth conversation through text messages.
Other than my best friends, when I use Facebook chat, it's usually with newer friends that I see around fairly often but still don't know that well (ie, we're not yet at the level of friendship where we'd go out of our way to call/text each other). If I have someone's number and am trying to get in touch with them directly for any reason, especially to make plans, I'll just text them.
