  • New Datingish Feature: Playlists Are For Lovers

Music is a huge part of our everyday lives and, for many of us, music is also closely associated with love.

Every Monday we are going to bring y'all songs or videos that have helped us get through the good and the bad, songs that have special significance to us, songs that we think are terrific and want to share with our awesome readers.

This week we have a mix of songs that came out recently and other that hearken back aways.

A song to fall in love to: "Paris Nights/ New York Mornings" by Corinne Bailey Rae

If you haven't heard of this British songbird, you should go check out her self titled debut album and her newest CD "The Sea." It's all Neo-Soul and love, good music to just spend lazy days in the sun with. It's all pleasant and beautiful, even when she is singing about heartbreak. "Paris Nights/ New York Mornings," however, is upbeat, sunshine, and fun-- the perfect tone for a new romance.

song to get it on to: "Howlin' For You" by The Black Keys

The Black Keys-- in case you didn't know-- are a huge deal. And "Brothers" is the sexist album yet from this rock duo. "Howlin' For You" has a super sexy bass, great drum beats, and Dan's voice is just this husky, grungy, dirty, delicious thing. This song must have been made to get people in the mood.

song to cry to: "Thanks, That Was Fun" by Barenaked Ladies

Oh, this takes me back! The Barenaked Ladies were my first Canadian band and I loved them for their off-beat music, cheeky humor, but underlying strong emotions that any person of any age can connect to. For me, this song reminds me of my first boyfriend, who I dated for over three years. It's about an unhealthy relationship, when love-- or simply attachment-- has grown to resentment. It's an awful feeling that burns your throat, and "Thanks, That Was Fun" catches the animosity perfectly.

song to rage to:"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette (queen of pop angst and breakup songs)

Where are my angry former grade schoolers? I was quite the little ball of rage around 7th and 8th grade, as those years were not fun, and when I discovered Alanis I knew I had found my voice. "You Oughta Know" if a big "fuck you" to all the cheaters and the people in your past who have hurt you. I remember blaring all the tracks from "Jagged Little Pill" into high school, dancing around and screaming the lyrics, feeling secure and strong because someone else could put word to how I felt.

    Enjoy!
