  • The Movie I Can't Wait To See: Blue Valentine

My heart hurt after watching this short trailer. And that doesn't happen very often.

Blue Valentine is the story of a Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), a married couple who have fallen out of love. In a last ditch attempt to save their marriage, they visit a theme hotel. The movie switches from their beautiful beginning and their unhappy present throughout the movie.

Recently, this little romance has stirred up some controversy when the MPAA gave the film an NC-17 rating due to an uncomfortable scene where Cindy allows Dean to have sex with her, even though she doesn't want to. Apparently there is very little nudity and no violence in the rest of the film-- it's fairly tame.

The Weinstein Company is currently speaking the appeals process because if the film does not receive an R rating, the chance of the movie achieving more than a very select release is slim. If they lose, the scene will most likely be cut, which would be appalling.

Seriously, I've seen some very explicit stuff with an R rating, stuff with very graphic violence, language, sex, and even rape. Why this awkward-- but very true to life-- scene is so objectionable is beyond me. Although I know I will see this movie despite the rating, I hope they will the appeal not only so more people have a chance to watch something this powerful, but so the studio and everyone involved in this project can make some revenue. Hollywood is a business and if movies like this don't make money, we simply won't see many of them.

Blue Valentine premiered at the last Sundance Film Festival and has also played at Cannes and Toronto. Both Gosling and Wiliams have received Oscar buzz for their performances.

What say you? Interested in going?
