  • Have a Broken Heart? Be In a Museum!

A few summers ago, after kicking a few margaritas back, a couple of my girlfriends and I joked about our idea for a museum: the hoodie museum. Between the three of us, we probably had over a dozen hoodies (and other articles of clothing) left behind from the exes and hookups of our sorted dating pasts.

Little did we know that our idea was not only already invented, but collecting items from scorned lovers all over the world!

That's right, if you hate your ex and you want that hoodie he left at your apartment out of your life forever, just plan a trip to scenic Croatia (which I should probably learn something about if I'm going to pimp it as a vacation spot), and stop on by...

    THE MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS!

The museum's website sums up its mission like so:

"The Museum of Broken Relationships grew from a traveling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships and their ruins. Unlike ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers a chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creation: by contributing to the Museum's collection."

Anyone can send the museum an object to display, usually something that has some sentimental value from a shattered romance. Each item is displayed with an anonymous story about the significance of the object, and why it was donated. And let me tell you, these broken-hearted donors do not hold back.

    Now take this little fellow...

Sweet, isn't he? Well, his donor doesn't seem to think so. She can't stand the sight of him anymore. His description reads:

"'I love you' – WHAT A LIE! LIES, DAMN LIES! Yes, it's like that when you are young, naïve and in love. And you don't realize your boyfriend started dating you just because he wanted to take you to bed! I got this teddy bear for Valentine's. He survived on top of my closet in a plastic bag, because it wasn't him who hurt me, but the idiot who left him behind."

Or, if you want a lighthearted, slightly creepier exhibit, check this out:

Yes. It's what you think it is. It's description reads:

"In a Zagreb Hospital I met a beautiful, young, and ambitious social worker from the Ministry of Defense. When she helped me to get certain materials, which I, as a war invalid, needed from my under-knee prosthesis, the love was born. The prosthesis endured longer than our love. It was made of better material!"

Visit the museum's website for more info on location, exhibits, and how to submit.

What kind of items could you submit to the Museum of Broken Relationships? Would you want to visit this kind of museum?
