"It Gets Better" Offers Hope To Gay Teens
High school is rough for most of us, but I can't imagine how hard is must be for a gay person.
In high school, kids are cruel. They pick apart anything. They are afraid of things that are different.
On top of trying to figure out who you are and what you are interested in, a gay teen faces so many different dilemmas. And being a gay teen in a school-- hell, a whole town-- that does not accept homosexuality is unfathomable for me.
I-- and most of America-- don't know how that feels, but Dan Savage and his husband do. And they want to help.
Welcome to the "It Gets Better Project."
Dan and his hubby created an entire Youtube channel devoted to older gays telling younger gays that life will, indeed, get better after high school.
And it's making a difference. People are taking notice. The channel was just created 8 days ago and it already has over 3,000 subscribers and tons of videos other members of the gay community have uploaded.
I've read several comments on different sites about this project and I've only heard great things. The only regret I've heard expressed is how much they wish the project had been around when they were in high school.
This sort of thing restores my confidence in the world.
"It Gets Better" is simply beautiful. What do you think of this project?

This is awesome. I wish this had been around when I came out my freshman year of high school. I mean, it was only a few months and then the novelty died down, but still.
I love this sfm<3
It really does get better.
I think it's absolutely fantastic. :)
I was very out and open at my high school about my sexual orientation; I was one of the founders of my high school's Gay Straight Alliance. We had to fight tooth and nail for it in our conservative community, and eventually it got shut down because some of the intolerant parents got pissed off. Some people tore down our GSA signs, but thankfully, I was never, ever personally harassed at school. I had many extremely supportive friends and teachers. The majority of everyone else didn't really give a damn either way.
How I was treated at home, on the other hand, was a completely different story. My mom rejected me (like these men feared from their family) because she's a devout Christian. She kicked me out onto the streets. The rest of my family wasn't supportive, either.
As an adult, it has gotten better, though. Most of my family now accepts me for who I am, and they just want me to be happy and safe in life.
It's beautiful. I love it. (: <3 I know exactly how it feels to be excluded from shit, and called a dyke or whatever but that's okay. It got better. <3
Awesome!
I wish I had things like they have now for gay teens. It would have made my life a bit more easier. I wasn't subjected to bullying too much because I stayed in the closet. But to know someone was championing my right to be who I am would've made me not hate myself for so many years.
This is great stuff. I hope the message gets out to those who are being bullied and to those who are doing the bullying.
Great project :)
That's awesome =)
My friend made a video! She's soooo awesome. haha I looked up to her in high school.

I'm glad this isn't an issue in my high school :]
This was absouletely amazing <3 Simply inspiring,
this was a great video, I'm glad that I watched it. I have no idea what this would be like, but I'm glad that there's support who do know what it's like.
So great! I too wish it was around (though I would only have been caught watching it in the dead of night, purely out of "curiosity, not because I'm gay. Gross."). Nowadays, I find myself going on yahoo!answers and telling this exactly thing to struggling gay teens asking for help. Though I know there are a lot of kids who, like I was, are in total denial of it and won't dare access such a page. Hopefully things will change enough in the future so that these kids won't have to feel this way.
This is amazing, and yet unfortunate that it's 2010 and people still can't seem to accept others' differences. It's sad.
I'm glad that the majority of the students in my high school were gay. Any and everyone could come out without feeling as though they would be bashed for doing so.
Homosexuality is unnatural. Bottom line.
@Revolutionary22@xanga - Unnatural - something that does not occur in nature.
There are plenty of cases of homosexuality in nature.
its a start. a good start.
think its going to take years. hell. centuries, before they would have this in my country. (Singapore)
(mainly cos its filled with lovely people like a certain person here)
