  • I Loved Lucy

Arguably one of the best sitcoms ever made, I Love Lucy won my heart at 6 years old. I watched in amazement how this grown woman lit her nose on fire, fought a woman while stomping grapes, and stuffed chocolates into her shirt.

She made me laugh, but there was something else. There was magic. I loved the relationship between her and Ricky. She would always try some shananigans to be in the show and he would get mad, but at the end of the episode they gazed lovingly into each other’s eyes and kissed.

That’s the kind of relationship I want when I grow up, I thought to myself, They’re so perfect…..Or so I thought.

As I got older, I read biographies on Lucille Ball and watched movies about her. I had all sorts of collectibles and DVDs of her shows. As I found out more about her life, I grew very sad.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz weren’t the happy couple like their Lucy and Ricky Ricardo counterparts. They started off great, had beautiful kids, and then got a divorce partly because…..Desi cheated.

Ricky Ricardo cheated. Did I miss that episode of I Love Lucy? This time it was Ricky who had some ‘splaining to do.

Imagine my bubble bursting as a child. My role model couple with the perfect marriage on TV didn’t have a perfect marriage in real life.

It’s not like Disney, where they show the Prince save the Princess and they live happily ever after. They don’t show the Prince with a beer gut and the Princess being a nagging bitch in their middle age.

I guess it sort of prepared me for the worst. It taught me at young age the reality of love. It made me realize that even though relationships seem perfect, that you have to prepare yourself for ups and downs. Sometimes it just doesn’t work.

I used to resent them for not being together anymore. I thought it was going to ruin my view of the show. But as I watched the episodes, I realized the magic was still there. They did love each other in a very real way.

Desi really loved Lucy, and with that I fell in love with them all over again. Even if they weren’t together, I knew what they had was real, and that was good enough for me.

That being said, what’s your favorite episode of I Love Lucy?

awwwww I remember having a similar feeling when I watched a documentary on that show..it is kinda sad...and the fact that the woman who played Ethel and the man who played Fred actually hated each other in real life!

My favourite episode is the one where Lucy tries to go 24 hours without telling a single lie!  :)

I love every single one! I remember the ones you mentioned lol and basically had the same reaction you did.

Exactly! It's too bad that more people haven't realized this.

I'm not sure what my favorite episode is because I haven't seen it much. It's sad that reality isn't as pretty as fiction, but the fiction can still be appreciated on its own without the sad influence of facts.

  • hitomineko@xanga

that sux, i never went digging abt their real life together. So I didn't know they were divorced and the reasons why.

  • Hinase@xanga

I actually watched a special about it...about her life..interesting though. Though I have too many favorite episodes of I love Lucy. Can't pick!

I love the one where they go to cuba and take little ricky. I also like the one where they are talking  about a dragon thats in scottland that the towns people feed one of Lucy's relatives to the two headed dragon that's played by Fred and Ethel. Or the one with lucy and the cough sryup that she gets drunk off of while trying to shoot the commerical for it lol.

Man, I loved that show (still do). Hard to pick a fave because I've seen every episode a zillion times. The grape stomping and candy factory probably my top two. I loved when they went to Hollywood too.
  • Ktothetin@xanga

I love the one where Lucy decides to make a dress, and ends up cutting out a chunk of the carpet... but there are a lot of great episodes.  Sometimes, it makes me sad that their real life relationship wasn't great... and I feel like it comes through in the show, a bit.  (It also makes me sad that Lucy is shown as such a dunce, sometimes...)  But, I still like it :)

There are too many great episodes for me to have just one favorite. A couple of noteworthy ones are the "Vitametavegamin" episode and the one in which they're putting on a musical, but no one wants Lucy to sing.

  • ChelseaxMassacre@xanga

I love the episode where Lucy and Ethel have to work in that factory with the chocolate and they couldn't wrap them fast enough so they started stuffing it in their hats and dresses and their mouths hahaha I laughed so hard XD

  • Sirius_Fan_Girl@xanga

Well I think if he really loved her he wouldn't have cheated. And they were actors, so they could very well make it seem real... but I agree that the show is fantastic and has magic to it. :)

  • chauwie2you@xanga

Yes, I enjoy watching "I Love Lucy" a lot.  I still watch it when it's on on CW.  I favorited one of the latter episodes. I didn't know that Desi cheated until you mentioned.  I only felt sad that she was an alcoholic, I think; I read it off of a book at the bookstore.

    Who doesnt love Lucy?!

All the eps are great but my 3 episodes are the one where Lucy thinks everyone forgot her birthday but they really planned a party for her at the club, the one where Lucy finds out she's pregnant (OMG HOW SWEET WAS IT?!!??!) & the one where they were in Italy & Little Ricky's birthday was that day but Lucy was so upset she couldnt call him so she gave some neighborhood kids a party. Then when they finally got through, the kids sang to Ricky on the phone.

I have several favorite episodes... the one where they are playing golf and make up their own silly rules, the one where lucy babysat the devious boy and he tied her up and played cowboys & indians, the one where lucy stomps in the tub of grapes at the winery, the one where she is drunk from the vitameatavegamin medicine laced with alcohol and does many outtakes in the commercial as she speaks incoherently, the one where lucy is starstruck by the movie star at the hotel diner, the one where little ricky plays the drums and drives them crazy, the one where she disassembled the tv and got inside of the tv box to put on a real tv commercial for ricky as it later exploded, and the infamous chocolate factory scene...just to name a few. yep, I'm an I Love Lucy fan

  • dinguyen@xanga

    OMG. I Love Lucy
i loved all of their episodes.

  • Loud_Uh@xanga

you know what was completely beautiful about there relationship. that there was real love. people make mistakes and he had a problems but even after they broke up they still stayed close. every year on their anniversary he would send lucy flowers even tho they were both married to other people. he still always talked so beautiful about her before he died and still always sent her flowers to her grave after she past.

maybe they didnt stay together because of real problems. but real love seemed to keep them very close =)

  • raspberryjade@xanga

LOVED that show, same as you. I too was upset and didn't understand why they weren't still married in "real" life when I was little. :(

  • anorexique_xo@xanga

    vitameatavegamin.
i loved/love that show. their lives as a married couple never really affected my view of the show. the only reason i knew they had been married and were divorced was because my father used to say it whenever he saw that i was watching the show. i guess he was proud he knew that bit of trivia or something. i don't know.

  • wrybreadspread@xanga

Vitaveetavegimen, baking bread, wrapping chocolate...hard to say.

My 20 something daughter loves the show

I've read stories how inconsolable Lucy was when Desi died--and Liz Taylor when Richard Burton died--and Cher when Sonny died.  Love endures, even in sadness

  • raindrops_falling_onMy_head@xanga

I LOVE THAT SHOW :) I have all the dvds >_< I'm obsessed.

I love all of them so much, but if I had to choose, my favorite episodes have to be when they're in Hollywood and Lucy goes to the Brown Derby and she meets William Holden, or The Great Train Robbery, when they get on the train back from Hollywood to New York and she thinks the guy who stays in the room beside her is a robber.

I reacted the same way when I found out about how their real life was, but if you notice after "I love Lucy", she's never married in any of the characters she plays.

  • mulleina@xanga

Lucille Ball had an affair during their marriage, also.  But for some reason not as many people know that.

  • wilmoomoo@xanga

funny and classic tv show. i cant help myself to say " 'splaining "
