  • Why Is There Even Controversy Over Sexy Gamer Girls?

This video was brought to my attention via my cousin-- I'm not a huge fan of Seth Green, but I think he has something here.

Besides the fact that the singing is fairly eh, the message itself is pretty awesome. Plus, I'm all about the hot, nerdy girls.

What really jumped out at me were the reasons why the author of the article was hesitant to post the video to begin with: Because it has attractive women claiming their nerdery in various states of undress, it is going to result in the same three types of comments it always does:

    1. The erroneous belief that attractive girls can't possibly be nerd girls
    2. The controversy over why attractive nerd girls inevitably need to be naked (or nearly so) while proclaiming themselves to be nerd girls
    3. And, of course, the always welcome comments from guys claiming that the attractive girls are actually not attractive, and that they would never fuck them, even though that's a lie and they'd never, ever have to make that decision anyways
The first point I don't really agree with. The fact that there ARE attractive nerdy/geeky girls has been established for a while, despite what some people still may think.

The second one I can answer. Us nerdy girls like to be "naked or nearly naked" because we can. Duh! If "normal" attractive girls can be naked, why can't hot girl nerds?

As for the final point, I still can't wrap my head around it. I've actually been a victim of this one due to a few of my posts. Boys, does it make you feel big and bad for putting down some other girl? Regardless of whether YOU think she is pretty, why do you feel the need to bring her down? Since when is it a crime to have confidence in yourself? I say, you go, girl, for having confidence to say you are sexy! And, these girls in the video are actually hot. Don't argue!

What are your thoughts on the video? What are your thoughts on the controversy of nerdy girls?

I'll post what I commented on the original blog-

What is your definition of a nerdy girl? I'm nerdy for books, for knowledge, history and writing. I love video games but they aren't my full passion, writing is. I just enjoy games for what they are. Something fun to do =)  I don't understand the controversy myself. Nor do I care for the titles games give themselves. It's all load of hogwash. More classifications we don't need. We have enough of it. Nerdy girls are people/human beings really..and I don't think much except that. And whether or not that I like that particular person is something entirely different. They're fine. They're just doing what they love
     I'm a nerdy girl and I'm cute (as I'm reminded not only by my bf but by countless guys that hit on me) ;

Well, many times gamers/nerds are stereotyped to be unattractive, and people probably do so regardless of gender. Acne ridden males living in their mother's basement playing World of Warcraft? There are people that probably feel that way about female gamer/nerds too.

Obviously that isn't always true. Not all male gamers are unattractive and not all female gamers are unattractive. It just happens that with stereotypes comes a grain of truth, and the rest is false.

A group of guys I RP with over a forum my boyfriend made were really surprised to see my picture.
It went like this: *silence* *silence* "Dude, I didn't know your girlfriend was hot."

So, even gamer guys aren't immune to assuming these things.

lol well, ive always said, most girls are amazing looking. i mean like, there are times when i see a girl and i cant figure out if its a man or a woman ( maybe it WAS  aguy....oh dear )

The only thing sexier than a hot , nerdy chick ; is a naked , hot nerdy chick .
  • Wait_by_Moonlight@xanga

I think nerdy girls have just as much right as other girls- so they should shut up already.  Just because you're a nerdy girl doesn't make you much different than other girls.  Any hot chicks proclaiming that they are of a particular stereotype get slammed.  Cheerleaders are called whores.  Smart girls "need to get laid."  It's all the same.  I'm tired of hearing the same old stuff regarding nerdy girls.  I am one, and it's not a big thing.  Really.

  • raedium@xanga

I love being a sexy gamer girl.

  • gatorgirl54@xanga

    Right.

No one's going to say that there are absolutely NO sexy gamer/nerdy chicks. It's just painfully true that MOST gamer/nerdy chicks are gross looking, and that's what people really mean when they say gamer/nerdy chicks are ugly.

And you happen to be one that is not ugly. Grats!

  • EricBeck@xanga

My guesses on #3 would be the following:

First, I think they think it's expected of them to be against the supposedly sexist traditional/popular views of beauty.

Second, and related, they're typically around less beautiful women who are jealous of the beautiful ones.  So the guys are saying 'No, those girls on the pedestal aren't so great, you are.'  Not necessarily planned.  But it is a way to appeal to the actual women around them.

Third, it might also be a self defense mechanism, related to self delusion.  Telling themselves that the women nearby that they're likely to actually 'have a chance with' are what really appeals.  I think there's a good bit of the 'sour grapes' principle involved.

But in the end it's mostly just a big, complicated mess.  Not that it's anything new for people to try to tear down those they are jealous of.  It's likely a competitive adaption.

Seth Green and his Robot Chicken...what a guy.

Gaming is something many people share.  Perhaps not of the video variety, but who hasn't played a drinking game or some form of cards or as a kid played kickball or hopscotch or something?  Anything competitive can be considered a game and any participants would be gamers.  I suppose you could include crosswords and sudoku and such as puzzles but aren't they part of gaming as well?  Isn't gaming in the end really just a form of entertainment regardless of media?  Who doesn't like entertainment?  If you like to play games do you automatically become a nerd?

Stereotypes will always exist...it's something we just have to deal with but I've always thought this one was rather flawed.  I've known many a gaming girl and they were far from gross.

  • brirhor@xanga

Haha... I love the video!!! Awesome!! I don't really have a particular theory or bias on this subject. Regardless of whether they are jocks, cheerleaders, band members, geeks, gamers, artists, writers, or anything else... Every category that is out there has a little bit of everything. There may be a few HOTT or beautiful people and then there may be the worst physically appealing. There is usually an average in every category. At least that is what I have observed, even in cheerleaders at college. *Cliche coming up!!* Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder so it doesn't really matter all that much what one person says.

Aside from that, most 'gamer girls' that I know are amazing!! Great post!!  :)

I loved Seth Green before but now I love his midget ass a little more!!!!

  • midgetmachine@xanga

ok, so im not sure because her hair was red instead of blonde but was that actually starbuck?! cause that would be really exciting.

    and Han did shoot first.

  • WiredInspired@xanga

Nerdy and hot are totally subjective terms...

    However, naked, is not.
  • xjadersx@xanga

Yeah I hate when guys on xbox live assume that I'm morbidly obese, ugly, and will never have a boyfriend even though at times I had been on a boyfriend's account. Some people are idiots, and they just want to make themselves feel better. I love it when they tell me I have no life, when they have like 300 hours played in a game and I only play like once a month.

  • parkedxenergy@xanga

"hogwarts boys all make them swoon".. my favorite part haha

  • Rainweaver1314@xanga

    first off.. amazing vid xD

secondly... all my guy friends says that its super hard to find a real gamer girl... i always point out that i know TONS and that just cuz we look sexy doesnt mean we wont kick your ass at halo or C.O.D. it does bring a problem when we do kick your ass and then you end up trash talking us just cuz we're girls...

  • brittany_7x@xanga

everytime i hear the term "gamer girl" i think of andi from kyle xy haha.

so i've never thought girls who played video games were unattractive. in fact, i thought that made it more attractive to guys? i 've never thought anything bad of a girl playing video games.

  • HollowTendencies@xanga

    Nerdy girls are ugly.
    Attractive girls are stupid.
    Rich girls are spoiled.
    Fat girls eat too much.

I'm not saying any of those statements are true, but you can negate them as many times as you'd like and there are still going to be some people who believe the original to be true. It's life. Can we build a bridge and get over it?

  • AceValentineRocks@xanga

what the frak!? that was freakin sweet lol

  • xXDC_luyouXx

Hardcore gamers -- in general -- are not hot.  If you sit around playing video games more than likely you haven't caught up in physical fitness and dieting.

    Casual gamers...  maybe.

Girls who love karoake revolution and DDR-type games can definitely be hot though!

  • SexyGamerGirl@xanga

@xXDC_luyouXx - I spend hours upon hours a day playing video games, but I'm fit. I eat healthy and make sure I go for long walks with my dogs, or even go to the gym. I've met tons of hardcore gamers that are fit. Just because we spend hours playing doesn't mean we don't make any time for ourselves.

  • DenimPants@xanga

I was ready to roll my eyes at this video, until of course the fact they actually say Final Fantasy '7'; Hooked from then on -- Someone knew what they were doing. Ha ha. I also like how this is about 'gamer girls' but in the cosplay in the line dance, only one is dressed as a game character. ha ha. Not that I disapprove, especially the gender-bender at the end.

@xXDC_luyouXx - Hardcore meaning what? that they spend all their time playing games, or that they're good at playing when they do? Cause for one, I'm sure you're right-- I think though, it's quality not quantity. Girls who play too much are only doing it because it's 'fashionable'--

    • About Me: I'm a 22 year old girl who is a self proclaimed geek. I love to read everything, especially science fiction and fantasy. I love to play video games, especially RPG's. And I love to write short stories and am working on a novel. I started this blog because I get to do two things I love, write about video games! I'm up for any game. So if you want my opinion on a game I haven't played just suggest it to me. I'll try and track it down even if it is a hard game to find, and then play it and write about it.
