Where is the Love in Today's Music?

Back in the 60s, people couldn't get enough of love. They were drowning themselves in it. Nowadays, a dude wouldn't be caught dead wearing a flower in his hair. But why not? I'm really jealous of people who lived through the 60s. I would give anything to get in a time machine and sing "All You Need is Love" in a circle with a bunch of strangers.Based on Usher's songs the "DJ has got us falling in love" and "Love in this Club," I'm pretty sure that we are all screwed. Yea, let me show you how much I love you by grinding all up in your business. Sigh.
I'm not going to lie, those songs are catchy but the message that's getting across (whether we like to admit it or not) is a bad one. It's a reflection of our culture a.k.a. our mentality. I'm pretty sure if Usher came out with a song without a sexual innuendo, everyone would throw tomatoes at the producer. It's almost as if we are disgusted by anything that remotely refers to love.
I'm not saying that the music industry is to blame for the lack of love today but they are definitely a contributor. Current music essentially creates an overall mood. If you look on the Top Ten songs on iTunes right now, the mood is pretty much: let's get it on in the club, have a twisted relationship, then afterwards do self-destructive behavior.
Ok before you all gang up on me and list 100 current love songs, WAIT just one moment and hear me out. What I am talking about right now is the most popular songs...the songs that are played over and over again on the radio. These are the songs that are embedded into our minds and we eventually start to live according to that lifestyle.
Now going back to the 60s, The Beatles for instance were one of the most overplayed bands, just like say Lil Wayne is today. Yea some of the messages they got across were about drug use, but there was also a strong underlying message about love.
This is not a post promoting hippies and whatnot. What I am trying to say is that the pop music today is lacking and completely fake. There is nothing wholesome about taking shots and partying til the break of dawn. And you know there IS real good music out there but it's hidden because the majority of America wants the bullshit. Also let's be serious here, the songs about love are mostly listened to by chicks. But back then, EVERYONE listened to The Beatles. See what I'm saying here?
I can go on and on with this subject but I think you all get the point. It ultimately boils down to supply and demand. We demand empty club music and they supply it. So my question: WHY isn't there a demand for real heartfelt music? I will leave you with Taoi Cruz's new hit video, "Dirty Picture." Enough said.

It would appear that the love that should be in today's music is hiding in that woman's ass crack.
What's popular is that people don't want to always hear about love.
I've never heard this song before, so when it started it sounded all cute and lovey dovey...yeah, that went down the drain..
A song about 'dirty pictures?' Really? This is exactly why I never turn my radio on.
Good post! This is so true- our generation's view of "love" does seem somewhat skewed when you compare the popular songs today to the popular songs of several decades ago. I'm a little scared to think what the love songs another four decades from now might be like!
haha, as soon as i saw the words, "featuring ke$ha" i knew i was in for it. you are definitely right. there is definitely a focus on sex in nearly every popular song on top 40 radio these days. all the more reason to stay the hell away from it all together.
SO TRUE. I mean, there's a reason why I never listen to the radio unless it's someone else's car and I have no control over music preference. I admit, some of the music is ridiculously catchy, in fact, I listen to a lot of it on a work out playlist for the gym because of how upbeat it is. But the other 20 hours of the day where I'm NOT at the gym I find myself listening only to the Beatles, the Cardigans, Angel Taylor, John Mayer, and other music of that sort.
I was actually singing Come Together today when I mixed cereal with milk for my breakfast...
I agree but you have to remember they had harsher restrictions to what can be put out to the world back then. But The Beatles will always be famous 'cause once in a while you just want someone to hold your hand (without fucking in a club).
If I wanna hear about love, I'd listen to my Sinatra CDs. :)
take me back to the 90's
You have to look very carefully for good music..it sucks but its whatever. And when alot of my friends dont appreciate the music that I consider to be heartfelt and real and then they turn on pop it makes me dissapointed that thats what most peoples mindsets are; the ideals that go along with the music they listen too.
Maybe thats me being biased and saying 'I like the best music ever!', but I dont think its like that..Most of the music today is just fun and while thats FUN for a while, it makes me look at people like mindless drones who just want to 'Night at the Roxybury' bob their heads to music while they dont care that their listening to the same thing over and over.
"Party and party and party and puh and puh and party and party"
@SeeBeeWrite@xanga - LOL
That picture saysit all!
Lmao.
even worst with Enrique Iglesias "I like it" where he's clearly saying let's cheat...
"Girl please excuse meIf I'm coming too strong
But tonight is the night
We can really let go
My girlfriend's out of town
And I'm all alone
Your boyfriend's on vacation
And he doesn't have to know "
Listen to something besides rap and I'm sure you'll hear some good loving melodies.
You can listen to indie music? That music is quite heart felt..
this is why I wish I was back in the 50s where love did exist
@Hinase@xanga - This reminds me of a song from Harvey Danger named "Happiness Writes White", where Sean explains that it is hard to write a love song that truly explains his happiness with the woman. Not only that, but it is hard to write a captivating song, simply when you are happy.
@mynameisblueskye@xanga - Happiness is a very encompassing emotion lol I find it hard to do much when I'm extremely happy (writing wise..or poetry wise)
You're very right. And that video is embarrassing :/
mayday parade is my favorite band. they sing about love... real love.
I don't listen to "top 40s" and whatever because I hate the lyrics. It's always lyrics I listen for. I don't mind a fun, dance-y song that is sort of silly, but it seems every song these days goes something along the lines of, "party in the club, take a girl home, powpow, let's have sex! Chchchchchcheat with me, baby. Oh, look, shawty's on the pole, booty bouncin'."
And this is why I haven't listened to the radio in years. Not really because the subject changed, I don't originally listen to that many love songs in the first place. But there is no substance anymore. Nothing I can relate to.
I never looked at it this way, makes a lotta sense actually. Rec'd.
