  • Where is the Love in Today's Music?

Back in the 60s, people couldn't get enough of love. They were drowning themselves in it. Nowadays, a dude wouldn't be caught dead wearing a flower in his hair. But why not? I'm really jealous of people who lived through the 60s. I would give anything to get in a time machine and sing "All You Need is Love" in a circle with a bunch of strangers.

Based on Usher's songs the "DJ has got us falling in love" and "Love in this Club," I'm pretty sure that we are all screwed. Yea, let me show you how much I love you by grinding all up in your business. Sigh.

I'm not going to lie, those songs are catchy but the message that's getting across (whether we like to admit it or not) is a bad one. It's a reflection of our culture a.k.a. our mentality. I'm pretty sure if Usher came out with a song without a sexual innuendo, everyone would throw tomatoes at the producer. It's almost as if we are disgusted by anything that remotely refers to love.

I'm not saying that the music industry is to blame for the lack of love today but they are definitely a contributor. Current music essentially creates an overall mood. If you look on the Top Ten songs on iTunes right now, the mood is pretty much: let's get it on in the club, have a twisted relationship, then afterwards do self-destructive behavior.

Ok before you all gang up on me and list 100 current love songs, WAIT just one moment and hear me out. What I am talking about right now is the most popular songs...the songs that are played over and over again on the radio. These are the songs that are embedded into our minds and we eventually start to live according to that lifestyle.

Now going back to the 60s, The Beatles for instance were one of the most overplayed bands, just like say Lil Wayne is today. Yea some of the messages they got across were about drug use, but there was also a strong underlying message about love.

This is not a post promoting hippies and whatnot. What I am trying to say is that the pop music today is lacking and completely fake. There is nothing wholesome about taking shots and partying til the break of dawn. And you know there IS real good music out there but it's hidden because the majority of America wants the bullshit. Also let's be serious here, the songs about love are mostly listened to by chicks. But back then, EVERYONE listened to The Beatles. See what I'm saying here?

I can go on and on with this subject but I think you all get the point. It ultimately boils down to supply and demand. We demand empty club music and they supply it. So my question: WHY isn't there a demand for real heartfelt music? I will leave you with Taoi Cruz's new hit video, "Dirty Picture." Enough said.
