  • What Sarah Said...

.... Love is watching someone die.

What does that mean to you?

To have a loved one watch me die--that is was not something I would ever wish on anyone to endure. I thought it would hurt them too much. However, if someone I loved was dying, I would be there with them until the end no matter how difficult, no matter how trying. Of all the fears that plague people, dying alone would probably be at the top of the list. Is that effectively why we pursue companionship?

So who is going to watch you die?
I don't want to die alone.

First of all, this is my favourite Death Cab song, so major props to you for that.

To me, this song is about being able to stand there through all of the hard times. Some people get scared when the hard times come because it hurts too much to be there through it. I know that my ex-boyfriend had a hard time handling when I was really sick so he left because he couldn't handle it. Love is being able to stand there through it. In the song, someone he loves is dying and he is staying by, waiting and wondering when it will happen. He isn't running away though. This is really hard to describe, but it means just that. Love is being scared and being able to watch someone die without turning your back in order to protect yourself.

    Yeah Death Cab! =D

I wondered about that strange line: "Love is watching someone die". To me, it's relating love to a loss of a person. It doesn't specify what kind of loss though, it could be someone close to you or someone who isn't. But all the matter, it is a sad occasion, you may or may not know why; you just feel it.

If you take it to mean someone you know (and presumably care about), it may also mean that love is the kind of feeling that you get when you realize that there is little time left to spend with that person. It's an urgent feeling. But it's also a feeling that associates itself with memories; when people die, they naturally think of past events, memorable things. One last thing is, when you know someone you know is dying, you'll naturally want to make sure that they're taken care of, that their last breaths are the best. You'll attach yourself to that person until the very end.

I don't want to die alone either, but when I'm old and married, I don't want to be the first to die. Not because I want to go through that pain really, but because I don't want him to. Whoever "him" will be.

    Also, I love this song.

They can watch you..but in the end we leave the world alone....that's how it is...

    Best. Song. <3
I'm terrified of watching someone I love die, but I'm even more terrified of someone seeing me die. Dying alone isn't an issue for me, being alone after someone else dies is.

@ForeverLove_xx@xanga - I agree I always tell my fiance that.

This is my favorite song of my favorite band. Whenever my boyfriend and I drive around in the car and listen to this song it does strange things to my insides. I'm not even too sure what it exactly means to me, but...I agree. Love is being there, through the good, the bad, the ugly. Having the courage to watch the person you adore fall apart in front of you, whether it be flood, fire, disease, or some other act of god; even just old age. I also love this video. Used to make me think of myself in some ways.

To me, the lyric, "Love is watching someone die, so who's going to watch you die?" means something completely different to me than what everyone else has been saying. I feel like, you change when you're in love. That love makes you grow and you become somewhat of a different person. So I feel like the old you dies, and love turns you into a better you. Well, for better or for worse, love changes you. And then your family and friends watch you die. And sees you transform into someone new.

Does this make sense to anyone else but me?

I love this song! I think the line "who's gonna watch you die" doesn't necessarily relate to literal death. It means who's going to stand by you when things go wrong. Because you can love someone fiercely, but that doesn't mean they'll love you back. And vice versa. So when you find that connection, don't take it for granted. So even when the person you love is destroying themselves, you have to stay. You can't leave, because you love them too much, even if you can't stop them.

I used to work in a nursing home. I have watched people die alone. I hope I have someone who loves me enough to want to be there. And I hope they are there. Because the looks of pain on a family's face when they wanted to be there, but didn't make it in time are the most painful thing I have ever seen.

I love this song, but it's also kinda scary. I have been in the halls of the ICU, knowing full well that there isn't really... good news. Atleast my experience wasn't good news. It wasn't a girlfriend or anything. It was my mom. She died at 51 years old. But yeah, this song reminds me of her.

  • Andi063@xanga

I agree that the lyric could be applied to any...hard time, whatever that may be. However, I think that for this particular song, the writer was referring to literal death.

And, yes, amazing song by an amazing band. One of my favorites.

@dieindiet@xanga - Everytime I watch this video, I wonder if they are talking about death literally or metaphorically. It's almost hard to say. She is destroying herself physically. She is there trying to talk to him, even shaking him but he doesn't seem to acknowledge her...like she really isn't there? Then at the end when he still has his eyes fixed on that empty chair where she sat and then the song starts to replay itself. I think the song represents her in a way like a memory. I wish I knew what she was writing! It might tell us more.

  • dieindiet@xanga

    @CrossYourHeart21@xanga -
On the mirror she writes "He loves me".
On her hand she writes "A little?"
On the wall she writes "Very Much!"
    On his arm "passionately"
On her leg she carves "With madness"
And she finishes the sentence on the mirror "not at all."

Heartbreaking... Now I'm not sure what to think.

That is so true.  That line just steals my heart away.  This music video nearly moves me to tears every time.  The way they portray that emotion.. I don't even know how to describe it, but watching them is like seeing the battle I had inside myself for so long in human form.  It's true, but sad.  No one cheats death.  Especially if you love someone, death is a fact of life that you'd endure together at some point.

I was hoping this would be about Death Cab For Cutie! Even if it wasn't I was just going to leave a comment saying, "love is watching someone die," haha.
