  • Female Student Tries To Flush Baby Down Airplane Toilet

An unmarried medical student gave birth to a baby mid-flight and tried to flush the baby down the toilet last Thursday. The woman was returning to India after studying abroad.

According to Jezebel, "The infant was found stuck in the toilet after the plane landed, and had to be taken to Amritsar's Fortis Escorts hospital still attached to the bowl; doctors used a saw to free its head."

The baby is still in critical condition, while the mother (who was arrested after being discovered) is listed as "stable" She will be questioned after being evaluated, medically and psychologically.

According to CNN, in India sex before marriage is considered a taboo and just earlier this year Indian courts ruled live-in relationships not illegal.

Abandoning newborns is an offense punishable up to seven years in jail in India.

    I pity this girl.

I don't know how long she had been abroad, so I don't know if she was impregnated before her study abroad or during. This story makes me feel sick especially because this girl (some reports say 22, others 25) could be almost any girl, from any county. I know a lot of girls from my school who go abroad end up having flings with men from foreign countries-- some even retain long distance boyfriends for months-- and this could be them.

I can't imagine how desperate and scared she might have felt if she believed her only course of action was to get rid of the baby on a plane.

But my sympathy ends there: there is no excuse for abandoning a child like that.

An abortion, staying in a foreign country until the the baby is born and giving it up there-- she had other options if she couldn't keep the baby.

I'm sure she knew she was pregnant for at least a little while before giving birth, just enough time to give it a little thought about what to do with the baby.

You can read more here and here.

What do you think she should have done? Have you ever heard of any other crazy ways people have abandoned kids? What are your thoughts on this sad story?
