  • Remaking a Classic: Stephen King's It

I am not a horror junkie. I do not have patience for slashers or jumpers. Bloody limbs and torture rooms don't amuse me.

But I do love the super natural. And I really love Stephen King books.

One of my favorites, of course, is It. You know-- the 1,100ish pager with a killer clown and a shower scene that will make you terrified to bathe yourself for weeks.

Years ago it was made into a cheesy-but-awesome TV movie and now Hollywood is going for gold-- a real adaption on the silver screen

What are the chances they will fuck up making this movie? Very high, considering, the big wigs make hits for the masses, not the fans (something comic book lovers and book sluts have mourned for many, many years). It also worries me because the there are less than ten successful remakes of the many Stephen King movies, including Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, Carrie, and The Shining. And Secret Window was not one of them, thank you.

For now, I will search for as many inside information as I can. I'm still waiting for the Dark Tower movie to become a reality, but this should make the wait a good one.

Anyone else excited, any other King fans out there? Who should (but almost certainly will not) be cast?

No one. Any movie ever made to go with the book would be pathetic, because it is such a richly detailed book. I would not not go to see it.

The book gives you much more vivid imagery because you're creating the horror from your own mind. It's much more real and definitely much scarier, imo.

    why is this on Datingish?

  • xmzchoix@xanga

yes, i love horror films! the original "It" movie was pretty lame, so hopefully this remake will be better.

I adore Stephen King. I've always wanted a good remake of this...except, I know it's not possible. I've read it cover to cover at least 5 times. I actually have a tattoo from IT (in the book, the symbol they show that is on the door - it's in the middle of my chestpiece, the meaning secret to everyone else :) Until I explain anyway, lol). But they can't make a good version - especially with King novels. There is too much internal monologue, narrated character development, flashbacks, etc. It wouldn't have the same message.

That's the real problem with Stephen King movies. The deeper parts are never there. It's slash slash blood eek all over, when the novels usually have enormously powerful takes on love, on God, on fear, etc. It's really beautiful; it's why I'm such a fan. But yeah - look at Misery! Ugh. Shouldn't have ever touched that one. Or Pet Sematary...that book was and still is one of my all-time favorites. Beautiful themes of death and God. But the movie? YUCK. The Stand? It was like a TV movie or something, and it was atrocious. Okay, I saw 10 minutes of it, but that's one of the best books in the history of books and I couldn't even pretend to like the movie, how lame.

BUT....as a die-hard fan, I do have to say I enjoyed Secret Window - both the story and the movie. Story was better (duh) but the movie wasn't bad. And maybe that's just in comparison to my expectations/other King movies, but I thought it was a pretty good representation of the story (though I hate changes...).
Anyway, I will totally see IT, and I go to the movies about once every two years, if that says something. I will be disappointed, I'm sure. But oh well.
I'd really like to see a movie on Bag of Bones or Rose Madder. I think they'd lend pretty well to it, anyway. Again, they wouldn't do them true justice, but as far as a Stephen King novel adaptation, I think they'd be better than most.
Also, why is this on Datingish? Don't really care one way or the other, but I may actually like this site more if it was...um, a place to rant about how much I adore Stephen King, because no one ever actually seems to love his work as much as I do, let alone let me rave about it for hours on end (which I will do).

Oh God..I have a feeling this movie is going to be terrible.

    The book was so amazing.
  • snarkius@xanga

Ugh, you just had to remind me of the shower scene.  I was washing my hair over the sink for two months and taking sponge baths beause I was stupid enough to watch that movie when I was nine.

I am not a huge fan of a remake though.  Stephen King novels are not about horror but use horror to depict various themes.  Unfortunately, Hollywood forgets that.  Still, the movie was one of the better adaptations so I might hold out a small bit of hope for the remake.

I pray that the Dark Tower series is never made into movies.  The only way it would work is if some rich Stephen King fanatic backed it and demanded accuracy to the tune of Ted Turner and his Civil War movies.

The original "It" was a giant letdown. I spent 3/4 of that damn movie being terrorized by that fucking clown, but the ending was so godawfully terrible that I was laughing my ass off. It was like all the fear that had been building up was suddenly expelled in a hilarious-sounding gaseous cloud of stupidity. Fail.

  • diannisforever@xanga

@SharonJo@xanga - my thoughts exactly... and it was only a TV movie??? i kno everyone got scared of  clowns cuz of this movie, i remember it as very cheesy and obnoxious

  • Hinase@xanga

    @SharonJo@xanga - agreed

and I don't think I'll be watching it either..
  • Darla@lovelyish

The original It had me laughing most the time at its lameness. I love Stephan King books but I try and view the movies and books as separate pieces because they will never be able to compare. I would like to see Tommyknockers made into a movie just because I enjoyed it as a kid but as someone else said it will never be correct. All book fans know that. Books are amazing because they let in individual create the imagery in their head and everyone sees it just a tad bit different making books almost impossible to be fully captured in a movie.

  • mcmeister89@mancouch

If they get Rob Zombie to do it, I'll be slightly interested. Otherwise, I won't give a shit.

  • Wait_by_Moonlight@xanga

I'm not at all interested.  The book was amazing, and the only thing (to me) that made the tv adaptation awesome was Tim Curry.

So just basically- no.  Unless they bring Tim Curry back (be still, my fangirl heart).
  • SeeBeeWrite@xanga

@Darla@lovelyish - There is a Tommyknockers movie. And it's terrible.

  • xoxo_alisonnn@xanga

I don't get why this is on Datingish, but anyway...

I am a horror movie junkie.  I love "It".  A remake is just not going to cut it for me.Tim Curry is basically a god and no one can beat him out.Plus, I personally don't think there has been a decent horror movie made in the past ten years.
    I'll still see it, though.
  • BoxesOfRoxes@xanga

"It" is my favourite Stephen King novel!  Even though a remake would suck, I'd still love to go see it, and see what they got wrong and right.  I'd appreciate it if they included that scene where Bev and Bill had sex instead of taking the wishy washy "Bev and Ben live happily ever after" route.  I always keep in mind that a movie will NEVER be as good as the book, especially with King who writes with such amazing detail, so I don't always go in with high hopes.  I just want something that will retell a thousand page story that I love in a 2 hour movie.

  • TheSecretLifeOfPandas@xanga

I think we're all confused as to why this is on datingish, but I looooved the original movie and the book. scared the freaking crap out of me.  I didn't know they were doing a remake. I'm sure it's going to be shitty, but hopefully hollywood will surprise us and make a good adaptation...

  • Real_Carebear@xanga

    What the hell?
No one can do Pennywise better than Tim Curry. Yes the original tv movie was a little lame, but it was still good.
This is going to be an epic fail.

  • DoRi_dOrI@xanga

OMG I fuckin watched this in like 4th grade I'm still so scarred and scared to death of clowns and balloons bc of this movie ><

  • Luvlystarr@xanga
  • toxicserenity@xanga

the new movie better be good....

the old movie is the reason i didn't sleep for a week when i was 7 and the reason i'm still freaked out by clowns.

  • CrAdLe2daGrAve@xanga

how does this pertain to datingish?

  • OhFluff@xanga

I was too scared to finish the book. I got halfway but I got really freaked out at night. It's not even that scary but there was something creepy about it. Watched the movie, crap. I bet this would be better than the old movie for obvious reasosn.
