Birth control pills turned 50 years old this year, and
Jezebel and
Tres Sugar have been speculating over the possibility of the
currently prescription-only pills going over-the-counter. A
NY Times op ed recently argued: "Women don’t need a doctor to tell them if they need cold medicine or condoms, and they shouldn’t need a doctor’s permission to take the pill. Over-the-counter sales would expand access to safe, effective contraception, and help women take control over their sexual and reproductive lives."
The Pill is already over the counter in countries like Kuwait and Mexico. Should the USA follow suit? Here are some arguments for and against.
