  • Top 10 (Gender-Neutral) Summer Date Ideas

My original intention with this post was to search a male and a female dating site, respectively, for summer date ideas; I was then going to compare the two lists, which I supposed would be humorously different.

So I found a very male site (askmen.com) and a very female site (sheknows.com - I even thought the website names were funny against one another), ready to make the comparison.

What do you know - the lists were exactly the same.    Slightly different wording, but otherwise so similar I could validly argue that they were identical.  Indeed, ladies and gentlemen, I firmly believe - these ideas are ACTUALLY the best summer date ideas out there.  (They're all pretty cheap, too!).

Here it is - the Top Ten Summer Date Ideas:

    1. Waterfight - The men's list suggests initiating this by washing their girls' car, then squirting the hose her women until she gets the idea and fights back.  The women's list explicitly encourages a waterfight date - and uses calorie-burning as a perogative (I mean REALLY, women's magazines...always so obsessed with the cals!).

    2. Browse Outdoor Shops - The men's list recommends tag sale hopping while the women's list recommends flea/antique markets. All of those are pretty good ideas.  (Hey, you could get some pretty good deals, too...I may not wait for a date to take this idea!)

    3. Fly a Kite - This wasn't really worded differently on the two lists.  It's pretty self-explanatory, anyway - unlike eating a Reeses', there's really only one way to fly a kite.

    4.  Play in the Water - The women's list recommends a trip to the water park, while the men's list mentions watersports like windsurfing and wakeboarding, or anything requiring going out on a boat.  Again, both are good ideas (I actually think the men's idea is a bit better).

    5. Go to a Drive-In Movie - Again, self-explanatory.  This item was the same on both lists (but....serious question.  Where are there old-fashioned drive-in theaters?).

    6. Hang Out at the Park - The women's list focuses on the playground aspect of the park, while the men's list is more set on "taking a stroll."  Just go to the park - you can make time to do both.  Or you can combine them, and stroll on the playground.

    7.  Drive Around Aimlessly - This one is probably the biggest deviation between the two lists, because the women's list combines this with #8 while the men's list separates them as I have done. I think they are two separate dates, because each has the potential to be a date in and of themselves as well as the potential to be added on to really any other date on this list.  Why combine them with each other when any combination is possible, right?

    8.  Have a Picnic - The women's list suggested this be done in the car, tail-gate style, while the men's list went with the classic picnic idea.  Either one works, as long as you have a large, seatable trunk (and perhaps a roll-down or complete absence of a roof as well...so I guess it would be a truck, not a car).

    9. Go to Cheap Outdoor Events - The women's list expanded this to be any outdoor event (so carnivals, plays, so on) while the men's list essentially split this item into two different date ideas, again - an "outdoor concert" date versus an "amusement park" date.  I suppose that local carnivals are different enough from large amusement parks like Six Flags (the list's park of choice), but they're too similar to waste separate ideas on.

    10.  Go to the Beach - OK, this was actually only on the women's list.  I have to agree with the list's author, who wrote on her list that this date should really be "a no-brainer" (duh, it's summer! "Summer" and "beach" are pretty much synonymous words, no?) - but I know that's a little rude to assert in light of the men's list's failure to include it.  Maybe it's so obvious they didn't think anyone would need them to actually recommend it?

Anyway, I hope you like this list!  The two originals it's based on are here and here.

What are some other fun summer date ideas that you have?  Has anyone had good experiences with any of the ten listed above?
