  • Emotionally Invested: When Fictional Characters Drive You Insane

Have you ever watched a film where you feel so frustrated you start hurling insults at the characters and giving them relationship advice over the screen as if they can hear you? Two Lovers did that to me.

Set in Brighton Beach in New York City, Leonard (Joaquin Phoenix) is a charismatic, emotionally troubled man who has made several attempts at suicide. He meets Sandra (Vinessa Shaw) who is the daughter of his father's business partner. She's cute and sweet - your girl next door. It soon becomes obvious that she has the hots for him but he's not really that into her. In fact, it's mentioned several times in the movie that despite her arrays of admirers, Sandra has eyes only for Leonard.

Then come Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow) who is Leonard's neighbor. She's fiery, passionate, fun-loving, and he is instantly attracted to her. The day he finds out Michelle is involved with a married man in the law firm she works at, however, Leonard is hurt. He goes home to find Sandra waiting for him. That night, they have sex. They become an item. Oh Leonard, you bastard! How dare you use poor Sandra like this!

Even though he's officially in a relationship with Sandra, Leonard's love for Michelle does not diminish. Naturally, the latter leans on him for emotional support. She would call him late at night, asking for his opinion, begging for his advice on her affair with the married lawyer. You've been friend zoned, Leonard! And break it off with Sandra! You don't deserve her!

After Michelle breaks off the affair, Leonard confesses that he is still in love with her. He urges her to give him a chance. WTF??? How messed up is this?

Does anyone else talk to movie characters about their relationships mistakes?
