So I'm at about one week and three days of him being gone for work travel. I don't know about any of you, but dating someone who travels frequently for work is something that is not for everyone. I am kind of at a point right now where I just want him to come home and I'm becoming moodier and more emotional about the fact that he is gone. Usually the first week he is gone I am good, I keep myself busy and to be honest it is quite nice to have some me time and watch those crappy shows I have saved up on my DVR. Now though I'm just wanting him to get his butt back here already.
He also mentioned to me last night that I make him stressed or upset when he knows I'm upset when he can't home when he thought he could. For example: He used to say that he would be home on a certain day, then something would come up at work and that would get delayed by a few days or something. Usually when I hear this news I would get all bummed out and sad he wasn't coming home. It was hard for me to realize that this is his work and he needs to be out there. But dammit, I want him home and I feel like being a little selfish about it.
So it just makes me wonder what all you others out there do when your SO is gone for work travel. I know work is important but it's just hard for me not to be selfish. Sometimes I need to put myself into check.

My SO isn't travelling, yet. But I know in the future he plans on doing so for his job. He is currently apprenticing at our local shop, to be a tattoo artist. Once he's done, he wants to travel, and work in different shops as a guest artist.
For me just thinking about it makes me feel uneasy but at the same time, I want him to be happy and do what he wants. The past 8 months I was off at school, about 1hr 30 - 2hrs away and I didn't have a vehicle and he doesn't have his liscence so we had to rely on others to see each other. Just going a few weeks, was difficult and would leave me being moody and emotional not knowing the next time we would get to see each other.
I wish I could give some more advice, but your further a long in those travels than I am. Although, I definitely don't blame you for feeling the way you do.
My SO and I don't discuss his travels or what I will be doing during those times much, but I know the time is creeping up faster than we realize.

my situation is somewhat similar... my bf wants to become a neurosurgeon, that means he will have no social life, work ALL THE TIME and on calls randomly....... 80 hours a week or more? yikes! ill prolly only see him 2 hours a day.. but he will be exhausted to do anythin =/... we've discussed this.. and we realize our "neediness" is not balanced... seems that i need him more than he needs me... ><... im the clingy type, not independent in relationship, not very secure, and needs someone to be there when i need him... i want BOTH to support each other, not just financially, y'kno? so... i dont think my relationship will last too long.. cause.... i have my limitations, and i dont think i can handle it.. so yea.... like you said "its not for everyone"

No, I would not. My last ex said he travelled for business often, but it was just an excuse to cheat on me every chance he got. The only way I'd ever date someone who travelled often was if I would be able to accompany him/her on their trips.
im on the opposite side because i just applied for a job within my own company for a position that travels about 90% of the time and my bf didn't take it too well but if it's going to be more money and better experience, then it's the best way to go.
I'm the traveler in my relationship, and my girlfriend's getting tired of it. She's amazing in that she doesn't guilt-trip me about it. She's able to be honest about her feelings (that she'd rather I be in town) while still acknowledging that this job is a commitment that I've made. I make more of an effort to talk on the phone every night (not something I'm necessarily a fan of) and e-mail periodically throughout the day because she's said that those give her some comfort in my absence. She also doesn't sit at home and pine for me. She does stuff with her friends, volunteers, works out, and let's herself have a life. When I'm back on weekends, we make us-time more of a priority.

Well...I think it'd be hard, no doubt, to be separated frequently like that. But I'm a fairly independent person, so I think I'd be alright. What I think would be the most difficult is not having them there in those moments you really need it.
But I can totally understand your 'selfish' feelings, and I don't think there's anything wrong with feeling that way. Maybe you'll grow accustomed to it, given some time?

My boyfriend travels for work all the time. It's probably been little over a month since I've seen him and I barely get to talk to him since he's busy at work all day or driving to a new location.
