  • The Difference Between Porn and Romance/Sex Novels

Essentially nothing, when you cut out all the crap.

I remember when I was in high school, I would see a plethora of girls who would read novels. Either by Zane or Omar Tyree. Either way, the book has the woman half-naked, and inside are detailed descriptions of some graphic sexcapades.

I mentioned to them that essentially reading those books are really no different than watching porn. Unsurprisingly, they disagreed big time, and are the type to judge a man for watching porn.

Ladies, if you are the type to get at a man for watching porn or looking at half-naked girls, you automatically lose the game, when you are the one reading a book where there is probably two women licking a half-naked woman's cooch, while she is hand-cuffed or a woman fantasizing about three muscular dudes in a fraternity tying her to the bedpost waiting to tag team her in her own bedroom.

Face it. The difference between a sex novel fantasy and a porno is essentially nothing. Surely, you can point out that the difference is a woman's eye for detail and imagination. But that same eye for detail and imagination also inspires scripts in a softcore movie or a script for day to day fetish porn updates. Yes, some pornography actually take the time to have scripts and scenarios.

Both of them are made to turn you on or hand you a fantasy. And judging by the scenarios laid out for you, women would either find both degrading, or get off on it. And they are both tools that show that you want it more than someone who doesn't watch or read things of that nature.

So, ladies please understand. We all have dirty minds. Throw in some romantic gestures, a snake, two conga drums, a beetle and an accordion soundtrack, and it will still be considered a form of porn, when it consists of these major elements: something about it will be purely sexual, and someone at some time is going to get an immaculate orgasm.

I've never thought about it that way. I'm not opposed to porn or porn lit in any form, nor am I exactly a huge supporter of either, but it's an interesting way to think about it.

I never read a porn novel but I like the suspense that it builds yet I don't have the attention span to read the entire book lol porn doesn't have good actors to read the script to make it believable so I prefer softcore porn in movies but they don't show graphic visuals like regular porn does. porn is porn but it often doesn't cater to what I'd like to see, so I'm not that into porn, I just develop my own fantasies when I stare at jude law

  • babymeatball@xanga

essentially i agree. but books don't have actual pictures of a real life people, so it feels a little more innocent. its kind of a guideline to your fantasies (at least i assume, i've never been a fan of romance novels) like fill in the blank.

also, romance novels don't involve the exploitation of vulnerable young women or men.

either way, both are for people with poor imaginations.

I absolutely concur with this post.

  • whisperitloudly@xanga

wrong wrong wrong.  while they might both serve to get someone off, they are entirely different.  you want to know how?  the book has a plot.  granted, it might be a thin plot, but there's a story there.  porn, true porn, is just the sex, no story.  i didn't care when my ex watched porn, and in fact watched it with him sometimes.  but there IS a difference.  and for that matter, i'd totally watch a lot more porn if there was a plot with it.  i like to feel involved in the story.

  • mynameisblueskye@xanga

@whisperitloudly@xanga - What about the pron on HBO? The plot usually always has to do with a trip to some exotic place or a suspense murder plot.

  • whisperitloudly@xanga

@mynameisblueskye@xanga - i don't have hbo.  lol.  all i know is that i thought i had seen porn before because i'd seen some dirty movies.  but then i watched actual porn and it was nothing except the sex.  no plot.  no reason that the two are at the pool doing the nasty, just her sucking him off.  i didn't get it.  so i watched a different one.  that time it's 2 girls doing a guy on a parkbench.  why were they outside?  were the girls related?  how come nobody could wait till they got home?  i had so many questions.  so i was ready to try the 3rd video but by then the ex was ready to make our own porn, so it got left to another day.

point is, porn is plotless.  the plot helps me enjoy the sex.

  • starvinghigh@xanga

I disagree porn has more sex than these novels. But see I'm the type of girl that would rather watch a porn than waste 3 hours of my life before I get to the good part. I deffinitly don't judge a guy for watching porn.

  • allyouwanted15@xanga

    @babymeatball@xanga - Agreed.
But I get this post, I really do. And with certain things, I do agree. Which is why I despise romance novels. ;)

    yuppers. essentially they're the same.

  • Kiwi7534@xanga

I agree with you and i agree with your other post, most of the women who find porn degrading obviously have no clue what they are talking about or they have serious self-esteem issues.

  • AubreyBird@xanga

I think you make a good point.  the only difference is that porn (apart from stuff like hentai) are done with real people, which might be what bothers some gals; i don't really know.  As far as i'm concerned, porn and those graphic novels are all equally trash.  not my thing.

  • lilahj

ooh someone who agrees with me!

The porn industry is far, far, far more likely to result in the exploitation of a real human being. Though this is not always the case, it has a definite dark side.   With a novel, any bizarre fetishes/fantasies (including pedophilia and crush porn) are kept in the realm of fiction. I'm not necessarily anti-porn, but the sad truth is that the industry can attract the underaged and desparate.  These are REAL people.  The difference here is between fantasy and reality.

  • xpialadocious@xanga

First off, the first line of this post is SO WIN.

    But also

@casey - I'd agree with this, except that porn is also fantasy, in a way, and real people do enact things that they read (various roleplays work like that).  Instead of putting it fantasy vs. reality, like you did here, I'd just say that porn does indeed sometimes/often exploit its actors, and that sucks.  But I don't see a big line between that and say, the American media's portrayal of unrealistically skinny bodies, being linked to an increase of eating disorders in the population (Susan Bordo's book Unbearable Weight is the best evidence I've got at hand, for that).  Sure, the porn exploitation is more direct, but I don't think we can separate the "evils" of porn from the evils of media at large (although they are specifically different).

  • LKJSlain@xanga

I totally disagree, and I actually am also opposed to erotic literature... although INTERESTINGLY, I'm a writer, and I write it... (but that's an entirely different story, generally it's only for one person my husband)

Anyways, porn is degrading to women because of the fact that it's "pictures"... A woman has to physically go to a setting and take photos of her undressing and doing horribly degrading things. (And if you only knew the REAL truth about what goes on in those settings, you might understand a bit more, you should probably go here, forget all the religious stuff, just read some of the stories - www.thepinkcross.org)

As far as rommance novels go, not all of them actually get down and dirty. I actually think there is a difference between romance novels and erotic literature to be honest. Often in a rommance, you'll have MAYBE three-five sex scenes in a 500 page book. Erotic literature is made to get you horny, and uses words that are more degrading, situations that are more tabu, and generally the focus is indeed sex. (not an unhappy marriage, or a ranch that's being invaded by indians, etc etc)

BUT, they are still writing on a page, and have nothing to do with involving a young woman and telling her to take off her clothes in order to become an "object" for a man to jerk off to. You could argue that these women are doing it "willingly" but knowing what I know of porn now (I've learned alot in the last few years) what I've found is that it's WAY more distasteful and degrading probably 90 percent of the time then I ever thought possible. (Hence the site I gave you, but there are so many other accounts).

So, no, I do not believe they are the same thing, although I wouldn't encourage either behaivior. I'd be alot more comfortable with finding an erotic romance book in my son's bed then finding a photo of a totally nude woman (who is someone's daughter, sister, mother, aunt, btw).

  • LKJSlain@xanga

@xpialadocious@xanga - I agree with this statement too. It's revolting that hollywood can't (even on OCCASION) portray a REALISTIC female in the lead role, or in the hero role, or even just as a normal highschool kid, and STILL get the guy, etc. They've all brainwashed us so much that I honestly believe that if a movie came out and the main girl was overweight and the story was TOTALLY normal (not played for laughs or anything) and the girl got the guy, everyone would squirm... it's sick

  • asrial86@xanga

DING DING DING!! You are so right!! I don't read that unrealistic bullshit because it's gross and boring.  The real thing is where I get my rocks off (metaphorically speaking).  I won't kill my boyfriend for watching porn either, cause I know that when I'm around, he'll come to me for sexies.  Yey.

  • wyrdkismet@xanga

good point, but i hear a lot of buts coming on...

  • tsukiouji@xanga

ANYTHING IS PORNOGRAPHIC. I have even become aroused by looking at my own genitalia (which has led via masturbation to the most intense orgasms I have ever had in my life).  Everything we do and everything we are is pure SEX. Sex is the driving force behind our lives. Without it we wouldn't be here. So I don't get it why womyn believe they should be ashamed of their sexualities. The flesh is everything we have.

  • i_saw_myself_morior@xanga

@xoxokissme@xanga - I have to agree. I never thought about that, but i dont really care if a guy watches porn so long as it doesnt interfere w/ his life

  • Nope_Ive_Never@xanga

I greatly enjoy reading porn, but I've never watched porn. I guess because I don't like the negative social stigma that comes along with telling people you watch porn. And no one really asks, "Do you read porn?" so I don't have to tell many people about it

  • Jilofalltrades87@xanga

This is so true that I almost rec'd it. The reason I didn't is because to me that means that it's wrong both to watch p0rn and to read romance novels. It seems to mean to you that it's ok to do both. Most people who are upset at double standards think that the standard should be equalized at the most permissive end of it. Actually, it always works the other way around.
