  • Older Man Syndrome

I've always always been attracted to older men. I'm not talking two or three years older, I'm talking ten years or more. My mom loves old movies and I've been watching them with her ever since I was a little girl. My first celebrity crush was Cary Grant when I saw him in To Catch A Thief. Tall, suave, and handsome...I imagined him like a protector of sorts, my night in shining armor. Now, I had crushes on boys at school, but I always favored my celebrity guys over them. I developed crushes Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck, and classic crooners like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. And they all dressed so well! Suits, fedoras...wowza! I fell head over heels for George Clooney after the first few films I saw him in. He's still my #1 celebrity crush, but not everyone I know likes this.

Some of my friends think it's gross that I have crushes on these men who are much older than me. I'm 19. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking older men and as long as you're 18 or older, there's nothing wrong with pursuing them. I suppose that's debatable because of maturity levels and everyone has their own opinion, but I just find older men much more attractive than other guys. I thought that in college I'd meet guys who were more mature, but I've found that too many of them act just like freshmen in high school. That's definitely not to say that there aren't any good guys out there, but it's been slim pickings since I started school here.

"What is it about older men that attracts you so much?" The fact that they're older may mean that they're more experienced with romantic relationships than younger guys. I imagine that being with an older guy would give me a bigger sense of protection and security. And for me personally, I find an older and slightly rugged face more attractive than some baby faced 20 year old. For example, guys like Zac Efron and Taylor Lautner....ew. It's not so much the age that's appealing to me. Sometimes I think, "Oh geez he's 42?" It has more to do with the attractiveness, maturity level, and style of the man and I've found that older men seem to score more points with me than younger ones.

Here are my biggest celebrity crushes:
    Cary Grant

He was my first "older-man-crush." How can you NOT think he's attractive?

    Humphrey Bogart

Everyone knows him from the film Casablanca. Darn you Ingrid Bergman!

    Gregory Peck

I first saw him in To Kill A Mockingbird. His character, Atticus Finch, was such an admirable person, and cute with glasses on too!

    George Raft

Believe it or not, the first Scarface was made in 1932, and George Raft played the handsome gangster Guido Rinaldo. Such a cutie.

    Frank Sinatra

Ol' Blue Eyes has always been an inspiration for me when I write music. His smooth voice and good looks make a girl go crazy!

    Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole's albums, especially the Christmas ones, always sweep me off my feet. He's to die for.

    Hugh Laurie

Not only is the show House amazing, but they guy who plays him is even more amazing. Sometimes I forget the plot of an episode cuz I'm just staring at him the whole time :]

    Heath Ledger

If you don't know me personally, all you have to do is look at my profile and you'll know that I love The Joker. Heath Ledger fit that role perfectly, and I admire all of his other films as well. I think he was 28 or 29 when he died, but he's definitely up there on my list.

    Christoph Waltz

We all know he played a total creep in Inglourious Basterds, but I find him and his looks absolutely charming off screen. And that smile... goodness gracious. That's definitely a bingo. :]

    George Clooney

I guess he's like the default hot-older-guy but I don't care, he's still my number one! The guy is serious eye candy (for me anyway :P)

Of course, everything I've talked about is reversible. There are lots of older men out there who are immature and act like children. There are older men who aren't tall, suave, and handsome, but nasally, creepy, and unattractive. If I were actually put in a real life situation with an older man, it'd be way different than the silly celebrity fantasies I come up with in my head. I'd probably be scared and get cold feet to be honest. The idea of dating an older guy seems great but I don't know if I could really do it. There are also younger guys who are very mature, very handsome, and could probably give their girlfriend or wife a perfect sense of protection and security. All my "older-man-crushes" are on celebrities (with the exception of one hot teacher I had once haha) so I'm setting my sights way too high and my perceptions of a relationship with an older man are a bit fantastical, but hey, I can dream can't I?

Are you attracted to older men more than younger ones or ones closer to your age? Do you think it's weird? Is there a certain type of person you're attracted to?

Zac Efron and Taylor Lautner - thank you! I absolutely do not see the attraction of those guys. But I'm the same, I guess ... my friends laughed at me because I once said "Jim Carrey's not that bad" and he's over 40, I believe. LOL

Well ... I don't care. If you're genuinely attracted and interested in someone and they're over the legal age limit, I don't like to make a big deal of it, though my friends do ... I'm 18 and have a 30 year old interested in me, but most are telling me to not go there. I don't think it's weird ... and I don't have a type, like he has to be older, but I'm not interested in baby-faces, lol. I'd like a man-face to look at, thank ya. :P

Christopher Plummer was a hunk back in his day.

  • BlehhItsTu@xanga

    Frank Sinatra.. *faints*

Sometimes I find myself attracted to the oddest sorts.. a forty something year old Japanese comedian that resembles a monkey. *shivers*

  • ElusiveSoul@xanga

I know exactly what you mean.

That said, I'm having a hard time determining if the hint of a crush I have on my professor stems from his general awesomeness, my being at an all-women's college, or a bit of both. ;)
  • ElusiveSoul@xanga

@BlehhItsTu@xanga - I seem to find myself attracted to some odd guys, myself. I mean physically, there's not much there, but I dunno...they've still got *something* weirdly attractive about them despite that. :)

  • Ashliz_secret@xanga

wow you put Heath Ledger with the older men??  He is not an older man!!  well not like the others in this post.. i love him so much!!

Anywho.. i love older men too.. boys my age are.. well they're boys!  haha

I'm 22 now and my man is 11 years older than me at 33.. I started dating him when i was 19.. my boyfriend before him was my age and i couldn't handle it.. and now, after dating Adam, I could never date a guy who isn't at least 25.. of course everyones different.. some guys are at that level when they are younger but generally.. yuck!!  I gotta have a man not a boy

  • Ashliz_secret@xanga

oh and i should add that not all boys become men some 50 yr olds can still be boys

  • WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga

I couldnt agree more! I have always been attracted to old time stars like Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant! That era just speaks to me and man, they dont make 'em like that anymore! I think thats why I am so attractive to the Hollywood glamour stars... they were suave and sophisticated, talented and were gentemen... like the all around perfect guy. I am somewhat attracted to older stars of today, I do have a very teeny crush on George Clooney but thats pretty much it. I did date a man who was 12 years older than me when I was your age. He was my boss and it was cool. I mean, I was really attracted to him, not just him but his personality and I always thought it was perfectly acceptable to be attracted to someone who was in their early 30s and I hadnt even hit 20 yet. It may seem creepy but its not, as long as you date like a normal guy not one of those 40-something creepos. Ya know? Anyway, he had kids and I had school and wasnt even able to drink so taking our relationship seriously was hard. I find myself staring at a 30-something year old security guard at a saloon I go to from time to time and right now, thats the extent of my attraction to the quite older male.

    god, i love this post!

according to the evolutionary perspective, women tend to be more attracted to older men because older men meant more security and stability in surviving, in addition to leaving offspring. perhaps this has trickled down into modern times...
but i love all the guys you posted! maybe you were simply born in the wrong era. :P
i love daniel day-lewis, alan rickman, and hugh laurie, meself. :)
  • TexasTidbits@xanga

Us older guys are just suave thats all, oh and maybe full of BS.

  • pnigophobicpk@xanga

I so agree.  Older men are just so much more confident and have intelligent senses of humor.  That's why I have a tiny crush on a couple professors.  And high school teachers

As for celebrities, I loove Jason Bateman, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell.  Mmmmm.
  • kinamorata@xanga

I adore Cary Grant, Clooney, Brad Pitt, Sinatra, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth... oh the list goes on. There isn't anything wrong with liking older men.

  • HelloImOddy@xanga
  • pure_dasani@xanga

    haha me too!
I find myself fall for older guys quite easily. They tend to be very confident and they have a sense of who they are... which I find it very charming.

  • Masked_Melody@xanga

I definitely find older guys more attractive, when it comes to celebrities. Hugh Laurie, Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman, etc. All slightly older, with that sexy, ruggedly handsome look. And charming, nonetheless.

As far as guys I know in real life... I'm currently quite attracted to a guy who is 9 years older than me. Not a HUGE age difference, but significant enough for some people to think it is weird. I really love the fact that he's established, successful, mature, and knows what he's doing with his life. Most guys my age are really immature and wishy-washy. I'd love to have a serious relationship with someone who knows where they're going, because I know where I'm going already too.

  • P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga

I like the character that hugh laurie plays in the house tv show. he is such a smartaleck and annoying, yet at the same time, he is so charming the way he limps to his motorcycle and rides away towards the sunset I find the slight wrinkles on their older face when they are smiling or angry very sexy. I don't go for anyone over 50 though.

  • perpetualsickness@xanga

Ever since I was like, eight I've always liked older guys...Being only sixteen now, this poses a problem. I've had weird relationships of all sorts with older men. And not all in "that" sort of way, haha. Even now I'd take a thirty-five-year-old over someone my age any day. Maturity and intelligence plays a big role, though. I'm not into stupid older men who have nothing going for them. I've always been attracted to the ones that could challenge me mentally, and that could actually hold a deep conversation.

  • buddy71@xanga

*sigh* nice to know there is hope.

  • PeriwinkleAdonis@xanga

I love older men ...beefy ones ...in suits. Ooh, liver quiver. Of course, "older" to me is like mid-30s to mid-40s. I won't lust after grandpas.
