  • From Single to "It's Complicated" - Part I

I've always thought this tagline was interesting and since "it's complicated" has it's own check box now versus the good old days when you were either single or not, I'm going to pay homage to it. I'm going to write about how I went from being single to it's complicated in a mini-series post.

When I think back, I can say this feeling of being complicated started early in my life. I still remember his name. This little Italian boy in my 3rd grade class whom I had a crush on. We started kindergarten together, we use to share our lunches and swap our cookies and we use to lay our mats together during nap time. Now, in my school we use to have dances every year for every grade. It's a bit cheesy but it's elementary school. I think they were teaching us social skills at a young age to prepare us for what's going to happen once puberty hits. Anyway, we were partners at the dance and that was my first memory of handing a boy's hand. If you put that in adult perspective, he might have been my boyfriend.

The summer right before 4th grade, my mom announced we were moving. I was devastated. Being the drama queen, I insisted on being left behind because life would be miserable without all my friends. I didn't want to move. I couldn't stand not seeing him or playing tag during recess. There was no way for me to communicate with him. We didn't exchange phone numbers at a such a young age. And I didn't know where he lived so I couldn't exactly leave him a note. So we moved away and I never saw that Italian boy again.

When I made new friends at the new school, they asked me why I always looked so sad. They thought it was because I was new. I told them "no, it's complicated..."

That was my first experience from being single to it's complicated.
