  • He Said, She Said: T.V. Shows

Xangans!  This is Edlives & Better Half here.  This week’s topic is one that most couple’s deal with: What TV show to watch. Or we could say…who really has control over the remote…

    He Said:

Well, I have to first off admit that Better Half is an avid football fan.  She’ll call me at work to discuss what was said on the NFL Network or ESPN (enter the Brett Favre rant that she discussed many posts ago).  In fact, some of my football information comes from her (like I have the time to gather other teams info…I have a tough time keeping track of my niners.)  I even admire the fact that in regards to TV shows, we have similar tastes…except…well….The Reality TV shows.  Of which, I get sucked into like a piece of lint into a vacuum cleaner.

Now, I know that many of my subscribers like Project Runway or Sheer Genius…but after one show, I’m done…I’m good for a week…or two…or a month.   Better Half wants me to spend time with her by watching these shows where the judges cut down these people’s hard work, saying it SUCKS like a rotten egg.  In short, all I hear is a lot of yelling and backbiting.  Is this right?  I think not.  Editing or not, I consider most forms of reality TV a desperate move by networks to have a cheap show with not only a limited budget, but also with no credible actors…and with a lot of yelling.  Drama, drama, drama….

If I wanted drama, I’d start drinking on a regular basis and then I’d yell all the time, too.  Hey, maybe that’s their secret…they’re all WASTED!!  That explains the hair…I digress.

Some people LOVE these shows, and more power to them.  Call it a personal preference….but She knows (at least I hope so)…that it’s out of Love that I’m watching these shows with her….After all, it’s either reality shows….or waterboarding….I’ll choose the one that - at least - has commercials in it to provide entertainment or a real break….but I may need a shrink when it’s over. So, I leave the remote to her…for I like the phrase “Happy wife, happy life”.

    She Said:

Oh, he’s rich!  He should count his blessings that I’m not a Lifetime Movie Network watcher!  I’m the chic that watches not only football commentary, but action flicks!  Most of the time, I choose those things over more dramatic viewing.  I will admit that I like Project Runway and some of these other reality shows, but there is also NOTHING ELSE ON!  The nights that those shows run, there is absolutely nothing on the tube!

Besides, Let’s talk about what HE watches!  I know more about how stuff is made, the history of the world, and the discoveries of mankind now than I did when I was in school!  I am fed up!  I know how skis are made, rubber rafts, denim jeans, you name it, I’ve probably have seen how it’s made!  I begin to shake as he scrolls over the Discovery networks!  My brain is going to explode with all this superfluous knowledge.  HELP ME!  HELP ME!

Oh…Oh…and the SCIENCE FICTION! OMG!  I wish they would have never found Stargate Atlantis again.  Isn’t that city supposed to be mysteriously missing!  PLEASE…fall into the sea never to be found again!  I like Star Trek and some of the subsequent Star Trek series.  I even ENJOY those.  I just can’t take the STARGATES and the SCI-FI channel 4 hours at a time!  If you need pretend that bad, grab your bobble head Yoda and your Millennium Falcon replica and go outside and play!

Anywho…we work it out somehow.  As Meg said in You’ve Got Mail, who fights about what video to rent on a Saturday night?  Surely, we wouldn’t.  Yeah right.  Whatever! (That chic flick reference was just for you, Honey!)

Do you guys fight over the remote?  Who watches what?  We enjoy your comments each week so let us know.  Also, we are always scoping out new topics of discussion so chime in!

WTF is wrong with science fiction, historical documentaries, or shows like How It's Made?  I'm sick of this you're-a-woman-so-you-must-hate-anything-intellectual bullshit.  I saw a Clearasil commercial the other day that was so incredibly sexist; the two airhead models were asking "Mr. Science" all about acne control, and they couldn't even pronounce words like "hyperpigmentation".  It pissed me off.

Sure, I like shows like Project Runway, but my tastes are very diverse.  I can converse about science, history, fashion, sports, cooking, etc., and it's very nice when my significant other can do the same.  Why not just leave the room and do something else if you don't like what is on the television?  Or record it/watch it on Hulu later.

seriously won't mind who controls the remote as long as one of the shows we watch is "The Big Bang Theory" =)  what can i say, i don't watch much tv anyways. =P

ADDICTED to bravo. I can't even lie and say I'm not.

When it comes to tv and movies, you're probably never gonna see eye to eye. I'm thinking compromise is the best solution. You pick one, they pick one. And perhaps you'll have to endure the pain of a sci-fi thriller for a night.... the next night you can take him to see The Last Song, and have him pay for it too!

I dig Project Runway... but I also like the Discovery channel when something good is on. I'd watch the Science channel more, but I want to be able to retain information when I watch, and I'm often too tired to so I never get around to it. Sadface. I like sci-fi movies once in a while, as long as they're kind of plausible!

I currently don't have anyone to fight with about what to watch, though, so I guess I wield the power of the remote with great freedom :)

My SO is always watching History Channel or Discovery Channel, usually I don't mind but I do get tired of watching shows about guns, blowing stuff up, or machinery/vehicles. It's not that I don't understand it, just that I am not interested. I love the documentaries about ancient history and things of that nature...but...shows like Modern Marvels or Ice Road Truckers? Do not want. And it's not like he needs to watch those shows - he knows all the information already! He's like an encyclopedia of random and sometimes useless information!

We both like action movies...he enjoys war movies while I just can't get into them. I LOVE Law and Order: SVU, he thinks it's boring. He likes CSI, I don't care for it. We also both enjoy anime, but I'm pickier than he is...his list of shows he's watched is insane! He really likes old movies as well, me, not so much.

We do love a lot of the same shows: True Blood, Criminal Minds, pretty much anything on the Travel Channel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc. We also will watch How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory but they're more my shows than his. He watches Two and A Half men though and all those shows are back to back so it works! :)

His list of TV shows is much longer than mine, but he watches A LOT more TV...a little too much imho. He is trying to get me into Dexter right now.

As for the remote control...well, he is male and an only child so getting him to give up the remote is a challenge! Usually in the (highly unusual) event that he can't find anything he wants to watch he will throw it at me, lol. If I have something on before he comes in the room he will leave me be and not change the channel on me. But usually he has the remote unless it's between 8-10 pm on Monday or 8-11 pm on Wednesday. :P

As for reality TV, America's Next Top Model is my guilty pleasure, but the SO is usually at class when it's on so he doesn't have to suffer through it.

@methodElevated@xanga - i love how its made! but not sci-fi shows(except star trek TNG) cuz they are crazy cheesy

id be upset if i wanted to watch my shows and the guy didn't want to too. i mean i dont watch too much TV but if i do its almost always the news. Owning the remote is hard at my place since there are two. but really if anyone comes over they dont touch my TV so it stays on the news.

He's really into chick flicks, desperate housewives stuff. I can only handle so much of the excessive, unnecessary drama before I feel my chakra blackening. I love to watch the history channel things, but I like all of the E! shows, and some oxygen.
