  • Cougars and Silver Foxes: Is Age Just a Number?

Confession: I have never dated anyone who's my age or younger. Before, with my own childish superiority complex, I thought I was mature for my age and could never imagine myself with someone my age or younger.

Thus, I always went for the guys who were at least 2 or 3 years older. I just felt like I could connect with them more. The attractiveness of someone who's older, wiser (maybe, because some people don't seem to grow up), and more developed always reeled me in.

Nowadays, I can definitely consider dating someone my age. Maybe even someone who's younger than I am (yay for the road to cougarism)! Maybe all of that growing and maturation has finally caught up.

However, I will always lift an eyebrow at an older man. Maybe not so much for someone who is over 35 (yet). Something about the air that they carry will always intrigue me. I know a couple of friends who date people who are 6+ years older than they are. I also have family friends who are married to a spouse 10 years their senior.

Personally, I can't see myself with a silver fox. I look like I'm 16 and the man could get arrested under false pretenses.

Is age really nothing but a number? Do you prefer younger or older men/women? Would you ever date a cougar or silver fox?

I prefer younger...10 years younger is perfect.

My husband is going to be 5-7 years older. I know it.

Sometimes, I feel that the saying of "girls are more mature than guys of the same age" is a myth.  By society's standards, when it comes to dating it's usually guys that do the asking, planning, leading and paying whereas the girls expectations are...  just show up.

In another words, it isn't that girls are more mature than guys -- it's that guys are expected to be more mature than girls because of higher expectations.  That indirectly affects the "age expectations" wherein women usually date someone older.

its just always been older, well in my circle of friends everyone is older, and they have older friends.
Silver foxes? lol thats the first time ive heard that, but no if there's a whole generation between us that's too old or young

  • pure_dasani@xanga

I am not attracted to younger guys...

  • YingXJ@xanga

No it's not, a lot of people don't date older or younger guys/girls just because they are, even if they love 'm.
It is important to see where the range is. I think approx at 6 years older and 1 year younger. I'm a girl btw xD
But you also need to see if the younger one is at legal age, so it's pretty complicated, haha. Thanks to society! :P

I actually prefer older men and I'm not quite sure why. Although I have a sneaky feeling it's because I'm the youngest in my family and I've been told we feel the need to be taken cared of. *shrug* just my guess...

I have dated younger guys and they are too immature for a serious relationship. A fling and F buddies? Sure, younger guys have better stamina.

younger. as long as they are legal.

  • CoolXwhip@xanga

Well someone whose 2-3 years older isnt that big of a difference. A difference is maybe 8-12 years. 6 years is getting there. I mean people mature of different levels but i dont know. I just think its nasty when you see a 28 year old woman with a guy whose 60. Thats when its NASTY!

I'm usually attracted to older guys.

Sometimes I'll see a hot guy who's younger than me, but not usually.

  • tiptoplove@xanga

i've always dated older, just because i always seem to be attracted to the older guys. my bf is 14 years older than me and i honestly don't see why age should be a factor. if i like the person for who they are, age doesn't change anything about them.

Age is just a number unless your young and immature. My husband is 10 years older than me, I'm 23, he's 33, but I'm more mature for my age, and he acts younger. We balance each other, and I don't think age should matter.

I have a real thing for older women. Like the MILF at tennis club. She must be late 50s, but somehow still has an incredible shape. I'm 29 - is it wrong that I want to drag her into the disabled toilet?

I've always had a secret thing for older men...my dad's always called me an old soul....they just have this confident, sexy air about them. mmm, mmmm. ^_^ I'm currently dating someone 15+ years older than I am.

2-3 years isn't too bad.  More than 7 years age difference, and it's CREEPY not to mention nasty.  I know of one lady who is married to a guy 15-16 years older than her.  That, to me, qualifies as gross and creepy.

older men in suits like clooney are charming in a distinguished news anchor way whereas younger men in suits like justin timberlake are sexy but in more of an asshole way. both are hot but the slightly older man is just more physically attractive to me. slight forehead wrinkles on men in their 40's is sexy but on cougar women it is unappealing. I think the silver fox hair and slight wrinkles around their forehead and eyes are sexy. maybe I'm weird lol older men aren't necessarily more mentally mature but physically I prefer men in their 30-40's.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

    Older.  I've always preferred older.

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

my current bf is younger but i usually go for older but only 0-5 years more.

  • HollowTendencies@xanga

I like guys of all ages. My boyfriend is a year and a half younger than me and a million times more mature than my ex who is two years older than me. I'd date a guy up to six years older or six years younger.

  • chanchina@xanga

As long as they are legal age and TRULY love each other I don't care about age.

  • schallerbrandon@xanga

Age isn't just a number, it is a factor which can be negated entirely in certain circumstances. I'd personally prefer about five years older, but am not very picky on such matters.

  • y_tc@xanga

age does matters, you don't want to date someone your grandma age, right? I perfer younger women.

  • kinamorata@xanga

Yes, I'll date older, younger - not so much. & Clooney has got it going on. <3

  • irishluck20@xanga

If the "silver fox" really is a fox, then I don't mind :P - however, I generally prefer to love someone my own age, while lusting somebody older than me ;) haha

  • Masked_Melody@xanga

I definitely prefer older guys... simply because I honestly am a bit more mature than the average girl my age. I like guys who want to have intelligent conversations, not guys who just want to tell "that's what she said" jokes and talk about awkward things. Mmmkay, thanks but no thanks. Those guys can be fun for friends, but they're not my type.

And in fact, I'm currently "talking" to a guy who is 9 years older than me. Which would have been weird when we were both in school... but now that I'm in my second year of college, the age difference doesn't seem like a biggy to me.
