  • Happy Singles Awareness Day!

"Valentine's Day, celebrates love and romance for those  currently in a relationship. However, if you  are in between relationships, or without a significant other, you may feel left out. Valentine's Day can be a depressing day. So, the day after Valentine's Day is your day." - Holiday Insights

I remember when my high school French Teacher told me all about Singles Awareness Day. The name he told me it was Black Valentine's Day. The day is when singles start getting together and sharing stories about their worst moments of Valentine's Day. The idea of there being a holiday for those with no valentine's piqued my interest to say the least.

I read on and found that what was Black Valentine's Day is actually known as Singles Awareness Day, which is celebrated on the 15th (but is sometimes celebrated on Valentine's Day to take the sting off of the lack of a valentine).  Some websites would call it a response to the commercialism of Valentine's Day, and it could either be used to spend by yourself or with friends. In fact, according to the website dedicated to the holiday, dedicated to the holiday, "this is the day that all of the single people can proudly stand up and show that it is OKAY to be single."

On one side, the obscure holiday was created by Dustin Barnes of Mississippi State University, who, according to independent.ie, "was not having luck dating at the time". The holiday was made to create parties, so one doesnt have to celebrate it any other day. Another few articles suggested that it was organized by the harsher "Lovers-go-die club" in Taiwan. "Lovers Go Die" is written and directed at couples who don't seem right together and are only together for the sake of either lust, superficiality, or, well, anything that has no real interest in love. They do, however, applaud couples who get together and are truly in love with each other.

Other than the Taiwan practice, if anyone is tired of having no valentine or wants to celebrate being single, then not only is Singles Awareness Day just for you, but so is October 1st--Singles Day. Who knows? When you celebrate the holiday, you might find someone in the process.
