  • Sex and Menstruation

For almost a week out of every month, my wife and I do not have sex.  And really, short of pregnancy or menopause, that's not likely to change anytime soon.  You see, we don't have sex during my wife's period.

I thought this was what everyone did.  But once I heard someone on Xanga mention that she didn't stop having sex during their menstrual cycle--that it didn't bother her or her partner at all.  I've also heard (though never verified) that orgasms can reduce the intensity and duration of menstrual cramps. So apparently this isn't a universal choice.

I don't really have any reasoning behind why we don't, other than the squick factor.  The idea is just sort of a turn-off for me, and also for my wife.  But other than that personal feeling, I don't see why it would be a bad thing.  (I know some Christians appeal to where the Bible says not to have sex during a woman's period, but really, that part of the Bible was the Jewish ceremonial laws.  The same passage also says that the woman should take a ceremonial bath and be ritualy unclean for seven days after the end of her cycle, and unless Christians start doing that too, I don't think they can use that passage.)

So, once every four or five weeks, my wife and I make out, engage in foreplay or "outercourse," but don't do anything else: we wait it out.

How about you?  Do you and your significant other have sex during your/her menstrual cycle, or do you wait it out?  If you do, are there any extra precautions you take (towels, condoms)?  If you don't, what do you and your partner do while you're waiting?
