Advice: Have You Tried Any Online Dating Sites?
A good friend of mine wants to try either match.com or eharmony.com. Have any of you tried it and found success? I've heard mostly not so great stuff about their sites but would love to hear your opinions.

i mean, why is one dating site recommending another dating site? lol
Haha. Sadly, I have tried them. One of them is Okcupid.com, and though I'm not single anymore, I still use it for "friends". It finds people in your area, like in your own city as well, and it's kinda fun because you can simply "wink" at someone, or message them, etc. Plus it doesn't cost anything unlike eHarmony which makes you subscribe for at least 3 months and pay over a hundred dollars. Tho it is a goos dating perse' (in some ways), because it's gives you guided communication, or you can choose fasttrack. Eharmony also makes you answer a shit-load of questions! But I would suggest okCupid. It's a good site, and free. : ) Good luck finding love.

I tried a sugardaddy site just for kicks. I didn't meet any of them. I was just curious to see how many old rich people would message me. suprisingly, they sent me courteous messages instead of perverted ones. I could tell some of them were fake because they had a fake looking picture of themselves. it was interesting lol
I actually met my boyfriend of over a year and a half (hopefully soon to be fiance...) on OkCupid. He had just moved to the area for a job and lived in the city, while I lived in the country about 20 minutes away, so we wouldn't have met any other way :)
@saral102@xanga - i haven't (or wouldn't ever) try it really, but i hear it's the bottom of the barrel of the dating world. i mean, why spend all of your time flirting with someone online when you can see someone face to face to flirt with? perhaps at school or work? i mean, in real life, as long as someone can maintain at least mildly interesting conversation with the ones theyre interested in, or for example, you arent screwed up by some previous relationship, being relationshipless for long shouldn't be an issue. ask yourself, why are you still single?
I wouldn't recommend Match.com. It has the reputation of being a booty call site. There's a free site out there called plentyoffish.com....haven't heard much about it, but it has been recommended to my sister.
Plenty of Fish is good...and free. I wrote a couple of posts giving advice to girls and boys who are starting out in online dating:
Girls: http://plentymorefishoutofwater.blogspot.com/2009/11/online-dating-rules-for-girls.html
Boys: http://plentymorefishoutofwater.blogspot.com/2009/11/online-dating-rules-for-men.html
@ShamrockLover@xanga - My friend met her boyfriend off of Plentyoffish. I would recommend that one.
I heard about plentyoffish.com from someone here on xanga. I decided to try it out and I met a really awesome guy about 2 weeks ago from the website. Of course there will be some weird people anywhere you go, but the guy I met is really amazing. :) And the best part...is the website is freee :)
Yeah. Xanga.
Does Myspace count? lol
@emmalee1508@xanga - agreed! plentyoffish.com gives me a lot of hits. i will admit that i get approached by a lot of overeager and/or incompetent people. but there's actually quite a few good guys there. 4 of my guy friends that i have now that i regularly phone/IM/text with, i met through that website. i've gotten married men asking me to be a mistress on the side and foreign men asking me to come to their country and be their wife... but i've also gotten some legitimate dudes. :)
you can be skeptical (or epistemological, in terms of the online daters' real identities and legitimacy and whatnot), but give it a try!
i'm on eharmony too, but it intimidates me. D:
match kinda sucks.
A woman that lives a couple towns over went missing thursday night. Apparently, she was on a date with someone she met online.
I'm not even old enough to use dating sites but I'd considered them a fine option.. until I heard about that. I hope she's alright and just went on some random trip or something.
Plus I like to get to know someone face to face, it's easier for me to read them.
I know some who have done eHarmony and other random ones. I heard it's at best a good learning experience, but usually not resulting in anything fruitful. I heard eHarmony suggests people to you that are outside of your chosen guidelines (such as showing a match for someone older than the range you said) and even worse still, they show you profiles of people who do not even have accounts and can't respond to you (you can create free profiles)--so it may seem like you're being rejected a lot more than in reality it is.
I only know very select few people who have done the online dating thing and had it worked out in the end. Most end up divorced or not even to the point of even a relationship. But if your friend wants to try something new, go for it--just make sure (s)he knows this--and then who knows? Might be pleasantly surprised..just not setting him/herself up for disappointment.
Hmmm...I don't really know. I do know I wouldn't try match or eharmony..why pay to find love?? Try plentyoffish.com or okcupid.com like the others said..
SeniorPeopleMeet has been more trouble than it was worth. Supposedly two guys flirted with me, but it was the same one, one from California and the other from a southeastern state. I reported them and blocked them. Next thing I knew, my computer went down. My Yahoo site had been tampered with, and my SPM site was hijacked. My profile became that of a black female less than half my age! It took me most of a month to get everything straightened out. Then I found out my original SPM profile had been moved to an affiliated site, MarriageMinded and that one won't remove it. They tell me to do it myself. Well, I didn't set it up so have no password with which to do that. Now they won't respond to my messages.
Yahoo Personals had few in my age bracket when I tried it earlier.
Bottom line: most are old coots who want my phone number right off the top. I suspect they want to get their jollies with phone sex. No matter. I'm going back to my home state shortly and they can all go fly a kite. I'm done with the little adventure!
@saral102@xanga - Yep. Okcupid is the shit.
I've found fuckfriends, boyfriend worthy creatures, beautiful eccentric women and friends through OKcupid. The site is kinda fun to social network with too. Absolutely free.
Yes! I've had a great time dating, finding love and sex through Match.com during a difficult life time. And...I have a book coming out about it! "From Divorce Court to the Ice Cream Shop - Stories, Confessions and Weblogs Insprired by Internet Dating and a Dirty Divorce." Stay tuned, it'll be available on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Xanga and all the support I got here is in it too!
@monke_man - Honestly, I met my husband on match.com. Don't knock the online dating thing outright. It's not for everyone, and there are more weirdos on there than normal people, but I'm a pretty shy person in real life, and tend to blend into the background, so guys tended to overlook me a lot in real-life settings. Online dating was easier for me at the time simply because I was so shy in person. It worked to break the ice and so first meetings with guys weren't as awkward (unless, you know, they ended up being strange, as some did end up being.) It isn't really scraping the bottom of the barrel (most of the time.) My husband's pretty amazing, and I never would have met him if I hadn't gotten on this site.
-Katie
I have tried ALL the online dating sites inc these 2 and they BOTH SUCK. Match is terrible and the guys seem to be only looking for MODELS and Eharmony is terrible because the match system is worthless. I didnt meet ONE GUY from eharmony in a YEAR!
My friend met her husband on match.com *shrug*
I think it really depends. There's a lot of creepy and weird people on these sites, but there are also genuine and legitimate people on there as well. You just have to try and pick through them. Some may seem decent, but aren't in the end.
I think it's about using the best judgement you can and take precautions if/when you do meet.
Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't.
I've been on a few. I've been on a few where you had to pay--I've never paid, just created a profile, but it was rather pointless. Okcupid didn't really work for me. I've talked to people, but it never lead to even meeting.
I've been giving it a go on POF, which I've actually talked to several guys. Some have seemed quite out there while a few (very few, mind) have seemed really decent. So far I've not met anyone in person there, but I do have a date for this Wednesday with someone from there. We've emailed back and forth, moved to texting, and to talking. He seems decent, honest, and we've had some good conversations. We're meeting in public, and we'll see how it goes from there. That's not to say something bad can't happen from there, but I feel okay with it, people will know where I'm at.
It just really depends. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
I met my husband on singlesnet.com we have been together almost 3 years, married a year and a half and have a 19 month old daughter and 4 month old son together
haha yes i have..
@xGirLxWiThxAtTiTuDex@xanga - yeah...I really like plentyoffish.com! I don't think I've gotten messaged by any people who are married or anything like that, but I've only been on the site for a month. hah. I've gotten messaged by some people almost twice my age. I'm like woaah. But the guy I met is extremely awesome and just amazing. I feel SO lucky. Oh, we're also dating now. :) lol
Of course many people use dating sites posing as someone that is single. Those people new to using sites had better make sure they learn how to navigate around this tricky terrain or theu could get caught out!
